Could Valve’s Steam Box stagnate PC gaming?

MEG: "A living room system that could run PC games? That sounds…familiar."

Well, if this "system" could run every PC game at full specs (anti aliasing and such) as well as 60 fps and host an operating system and run background tasks all at the same time then it is a powerful pc. PC gamers aren't satisfied by being able to run a game, we thrive for excellence. So if a pc gamer bought this and couldn't do BF3 with all the bells and whistles at 60 fps then he/she would upgrade. *sli crossfire* This may work for the casual PC gamer but for the enthusiast...not really.

I think that valve would be aiming at the console player. a pc experience for the console player, so it wouldn't run every game at full specs and wouldn't necessarily have to run background tasks. I think valve knows hardcore pc gamers would prefer building their own pc.

if this "console" becomes a huge success, it may stagnate pc gaming, but then again, it's what consoles are doing now anyway.

If it cannot do any of the things a PC can do except play games then it is not a PC. A PC is a personal computer not a gaming system.

ok retards. This is what it is. A portable PC, MADE FOR THOSE LAZY NOOBS WITH A PAD WITH THAT COMFY COUCH ARGUMENT. Where they believe playing in a couch is better. This is to introduce big picture mode. Hook up steam box to tv, use pads and experience console gaming at true 1080p and 60fps, specially on those ports. Its not going to do anything to pc gaming, in fact, it may boost its popularity and heres hoping they kill MS. STEAM FTW!

This reminds me of how M$ came into the console gaming industry. M$ saw an opportunity to offer gamers a console experienced, which borrowed heavily from PC. Xbox intruduced: Built in HDD, NIC card and Xbox Live (lobbies, online chat and DLC on console). Now Valve see and oppotunity to jump in with a Digital Destribution model and their dream of true Cross Platform Gaming.

Valve now has the the largest sector of the PC maket using their service. They are thinking they can do the same on the console market. Time will tell. I will remain skeptical until I see the price, how it works and the actual size compared to what Sony and M$ offer with their new consoles. I like the fact that Valve is a games company and that they would be their focus, but they will need to control cost of hardware and the OS in order to compete. We shall see.
