Scientists: Silicon processors are restricting computer games

According to a scientific project being conducted by electronics experts at Glasgow University and the US Semiconductor Research Corporation, current silicon-based computer chips have reached the pinnacle of their speed and performance and are now holding back games creators.

If PS4 has
32 core cells running at 6.0 GHZ that are only 16nm in size, liquid cooled and state of the art. A 500 gig bluray drive with 16 gigs of
Samsungs new DDR6 RAM.

Would that be weak to you guys???

xsteinbachx6636d ago

only if the dam thing is as big as 2 ps3s.

DeadlyFire6634d ago

Yes and no. Its hard to really say. CPUs will likely hit 16 Core by 2010 with frequencies around 4-5 Ghz maybe 32 core, but the performance per core doesn't go up very much at all, but with this new era of chips they are talking about using something that gives more juice to the chips than silicon that can be smaller and produce less heat and use less power. Games could literally skyrocket even further into realism with games using thought powered controls, and eventually a gaming system that works like the Matrix.

Bolts6636d ago

This article is completely stupid, its wrong on so many levels I don't know where to start.

Bolts6636d ago (Edited 6636d ago )

Maybe the PC is pumping against the limitations of silicon but the consoles are not. Even then the vast majority of PC games are poorly coded and optimized because the devs must account for a vast range of hardware config. Consoles on the hand sports not even half the computing capabilities of the top tier PC gaming systems but their codes are a lot tighter.

In other words, the software for this gen is still ways behind the hardware. By the time they start to catchup on what this gen can truely do the hardware will take another huge leap and the cycle start again. There are still plenty of ways to pack more transistors into the silicon yet.

I must say, now is where the cell comes in to play

WilliamRLBaker6636d ago (Edited 6636d ago )

ummm except the cell is built upon existing tech its not some super advanced future tech its built upon existing tech it is no different then an multicore CPU, except its SPE's are good at mathamatics and thats it. this is the whole reason companies had and are having so much problems with it, why its taking time to totally relearn things and to get the output needed but most devs are used to it because sony does that every generation they release an CPU and GPU combo and say relearn every thing you learnt last time.

Current speeds on CPU's have reached a plataeu and they are remedying it with multiple cores.

*every thing i said above is a fact but sonyfanboys disagree with facts all the time, they disagree with sales, and scores...ect*

u want a processor to be good in what else? cooking, mopping the floor! or what? u idiot!!! processors are about math, that what they do, that's what they ONLY do. u can model any process in the world into a mathematical model i.e. lighting, shadows, animation, physics, AI, sound effects,Aliasing Effects, texturing, weather, etc.... and the list goes on, all are mathematical model that u run on your CPU. and BTW, SPE's are powerful in vector processing not scalar as gCPUs, so they are so effecient running algorithms for such models than any gCPU.

Even if it gets to the point when chips and what not are holding games back developers will get creative and games will continue to evolve and get better.

As an accessibility option for those that need it im all for it. As the standard control for ps6 helllll noo, touch controller would be the absolute worst.

Eonjay22d ago

Reading the patent itself this does seem to be intended with accessibility in mind as it attempts to solve comfort issues that some users have with overall size and placement. Im completely fine with the current layout but its nice to know this option is there. It is intended to allow customers the ability to resize the controller to there liking even those the company may not manufacture that size. So, its cool to see they are thinking like this even though this product may not be for me. I would still love to see it release and see the potential use cases.

Digital will always be worse than physical buttons for 99% of gaming lol.

DivineHand12522d ago

This is interesting not only for accessibility reasons, but as a way to give players more control over their in game characters for core gamers.

I remember seeing the Tactus pop up buttons at CES 13 years ago and I was excited for the technology but I am not aware of any devices that used it.

The way gaming controllers are presented today is great, but I will always advocate for innovation in giving players more control and increased immersion.

MetalNCarnet22d ago

Terrible idea. For most games, you need to feel the physical buttons because you're not looking at the controller. I hope they aren't serious.

fr0sty22d ago

Unless they've worked out a way for tactile feedback so you can feel them. Perhaps little air bladders that could inflate when a button is placed in that position, placed under a flexible screen? Maybe it wouldn't be the best controller for all of us, but I know people who have medical conditions that make holding traditional controllers very uncomfortable with their default button layouts, this could help them.

Duke1922d ago (Edited 22d ago )

More accessibility options is never a bad thing, but man I hate that all electronics seem to be pushing touchscreen controls on everything.

They are just garbage

badz14922d ago

We are at the point in time when touch screen controls are cheaper to make than physical buttons. Just look at modern cars. More and more system controls are moved to the central screen now that all new cars come with screens. It's downright ironic too, considering just not that many years ago, people were warn to not use their phone while driving. Now all controls are moved to the central screen that you can't help but looking at screens while driving.

fr0sty22d ago

EXCEPT trying to connect your phone, lol. They make you stop to do that. But the big screen that is every bit as distracting as a phone, it's cool.
