Should Video Games Go Digital?

Adorkably's Christopher Dobrolsky writes:

"Recently, there has been a substantial amount of rumors circulating around the video game industry in regards to the next generation of consoles. However, there has been a general consensus on one topic. Physical copies of games, meaning DVD and Blue-ray discs, are being abandoned to make room for digital games and media. While some may be pleased, others including myself find this change a little disheartening.

As the industry continues to age, gamers have begun to hold pride in calling themselves collectors. These gamer’s collections span across multiple platforms as old as The Magnavox Odyssey and as new as the recently released PlayStation Vita. However, in the fast growing video game market today, physical copies of video games are threatened by the convenience and rise of the digital video game era. This very change in the market also threatens the growth of a gamer’s pride filled physical collection by removing accessibility of the hard copies of newer generation games."

He can't - he has one bubble and it's too late to edit the post.

That said, gaming is already very digital. The majority of PC games are digital, cell phone and tablet games are digital, and each console and handheld has its own online store (in the 360/PS3/PSP/Vita's case, containing retail games on it as well). Game manuals are being abandoned in favor of being included on the cartridge or disk (see Madden, every Vita game, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.). Even many retail games are constantly being patched via the internet.

Whether or not the retail market will be entirely removed depends on how much faster connection speeds can get in spite of ISPs and how affordable memory becomes.

I'll take a stab at it.
- Storage
- People like me still like to own a physical a game. Hard to believe but we do exist.
- Believe it or not there are still areas in North America that does not get get dial up let alone high speed
- Internet reliability
- Download cap by ISP
I can come up with a few more reasons but the ones I've listed are reasonable and not that far fetched.

I don't think it will never happen but it will not be for a long time.

coryok5191d ago

ill answer for him, without retailers, who would sell the hardware? cant digitally sell the hardware. so without drastically changing the industry this wont happen.

retailers dont make much (if any) from the hardware, so how can we expect them to continue to stock it without stocking the lucrative software part.

everyone in the industry, sony, microsoft and nintendo, all want to protect retailers, none of them will try and cut retail out of the loop for fear of their console being taken off shelves.

we've already seen this happen with steam - many of the larger retailers dont stock pc versions of games that have a simultaneous launch on steam.

Amazingmrbrock5191d ago

It's mostly happened on pc's, and entirely so on phones. There's not much to help against it by a decade or so.

You must be as high as your avatar...

Relientk775191d ago

I hope not. I like actually owning the case, instructions, and disc/cartridge. If u just buy and download a digital game, what value does that have? It would eliminate "rare" games, and no games would be valuable anymore.

Adorkably5191d ago

Exactly, all of us at adorkably truly value the complete package that is a physical game including the case, book, and disc. Any gamers who call themselves collectors should be concerned with rise of digital games because like you said rare games and any value that games possess would cease to exist.

Relientk775191d ago

I am a gamer who calls himself a collector and I completely agree.

Mikhail5191d ago

I am in southeast asia (philippines), so...not yet is my answer.

tiffac0085191d ago (Edited 5191d ago )

Me too, our internet infrastructure just sux.

My internet speed either goes down or gets disconnected when it rains and a lot of our lines are still copper and not fiber optics.

It will be the future but it will definitely hurt a lot of gamers in the developing countries if we go all digital. I think both physical and digital has a place in this market.

Abdou235191d ago (Edited 5191d ago )

I'm from Egypt, people Outside Europe & America will suffer the most, and please don't compare it with cell phone or any handheld download because the rise in games sizes is phenomenal. That's among all the reasons people mentioned earlier.

Adorkably5191d ago

I haven't met any gamers that wanted games to go digital so hopefully it wont be for a while.

Fadetoblack695191d ago

Like Steam?

Buy games, get No physical media, no box, no books, no shipping to stores etc etc.... and yet games cost the exact same.

Yeah I'll just buy the Physical Media then thanks tho.

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5822d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5822d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5822d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495822d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5822d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5822d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
