Hard to tell from images, but looks identical to the images and footage released thus far. Hopefully High Res scans will surface soon, or we can always wait for the playable videos from TGS to surface.

Anyone who watched MGS2 and MGS3 knows that the final game actually ends up looking better than the initial trailers. Definitely better than the 360 stuff we've been seeing. I can't wait to see the octo-camo in action, along with how you fight the new metal gears.

no game that looks as good and as real life than this game does, ON BOTH CONSOLES. This by far is the realist looking game. To say that GOW and mass Effect look better than this is just plain ridiculous. I havent seen a game that looks better on this even on the PS3. I think this game is setting the bar very very high for all the other devs out there.

or does a lot of the PS3 games seem to have the same brownish hue to them. It's almost like the colors are "washed" or something. I can't really explain what it is, but the colors seem off on a lot of the games for PS3 that I have seen so far. (War Hawk, RFOM, MGS4,and even Heavenly Sword to a point).

They better show some ingame video... or they are going to continue to bleed fans... You can't spect people to be happy with stupid low res pictures that may be from cut-scenes while XBox 360 gamers are getting even demos.

the xbox360 will upscale 720P games to 1080P, i dont think its native 1080p. Not trying to start a flame war, but its not exactly the same thing as native 1080p.
Anyways, this game looks awesome, i cant wait for the gameplay.

then why haven't any games on the system even attempted it? Because none of Microsoft's rhetoric was actually true. I don't want to repeat myself, but many of you know that the 360 has no such thing as 'free anti-aliasing' once it has to render above 620p. The 1080p update, as far as i know, allows the console to take the 720p frames and upscale them to 1080p. It's obviously not as good as natively rendering at 1080p, but Microsoft patches and updates a lot so it goes with their corporate strategy.

Funny how they blew off 1080p as being impossible and bad for developers, and now suddenly they're backtracking and copying Sony's strategy. Really, the update is for the HD-DVD add-on drive; it doesn't do much for games since it just upscales them.

The rabid 360 fanboys are calling you out by name on their side of the site, because MS has now made the statement that 360 will be upgraded to 1808p!!!

Well what I'm trying to figure is how they how to achieve 1080p resoultion 1.) without HDMI (which is obviously much better than VGA or commponent cables)

2.) How do they hope to achieve 1080p in games without the storage space? Games such as Saint's Row which I own and have played online are already lag and pop-up heavy. What kind of framerate will these games have in 1080p and what GAMES have been announce that can fullfil this resolution without signifigant drop in framerate?

I had a chance to talk to Shane Kim, who recently named the corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, about the day's announcements over in Tokyo.

If you missed the news check out the full press release on the jump, but in a nutshell Microsoft announced the Japan price and date for the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360. More importantly, they announced that the fall software update for the console will allow the console to output game and movie content in 1080p resolution. That's right I said movies and games.

The interview was exactly 10 minutes long, so naturally I spent nine minutes trying to figure out just how a console with no HDMI out would gain 1080p output with a software update.

Kim was clear that the console could support true 1080p out.

"If it is running at 720p we will up-res it to 1080p, if it it's already 1080p then we can display it in 1080p," he said. " This is a great example of our console's ability and the great advantage of being a software company."

Kim said that while the console will soon support 1080p out, it will not have an HDMI out.

"We have the ability to output either through VGA or component. We have no HDMI announcement now," he said. "We do have the capability to deliver the software and, if needed, the hardware."

I pointed out that some movie studios have said they will use HDMI output as a form of copy protection and Kim acknowledged that if a studio uses that scheme then HDMI will indeed be required.

While Kim expects that some third-party game developers will create 1080p games, he said that 720p will likely remain the norm.

"We believe 720p is the sweet-spot for high definition," he said, adding that Microsoft Game Studio titles will, for now, continue to be created at 720p.

While the release of a low-cost HD-DVD player for the 360 could help make the console more competitive against Sony's upcoming PS3, Kim things the main development that could help jumpstart 360 sales in Japan are game titles.

Kim said that Microsoft plans to have 110 titles available for the 360 by the end of the year in Japan and 160 in North America.

"It's all going to be about the content and how customers value the content," he said.

PS3 comes with all of those capabilities built in, right out of the box (And then some). Blu-ray used for movies AND games. Free online multiplayer. Able to render natively at 1080p (not just upscaling). Best of all, the system's significantly more powerful than the 360, which totally justifies to price. Hey, if you don't have the right TV for hi-def movies, no problem. Once a consumer actually buys one and finds to need to watch their movies in HD, all they have to do is buy the movies. Their PS3s already have the feature built-in without the need for additional fees and patches. =]

let not for get Requires $50 annual fee to upgrade to 1080p, even if you don't want to use live for your own reason they are FORCING you to sign up with live. Sounds like they are trying to make you do this even though your system can do it already they are making you join live to get the best out of your system. That would be like me going buy a new car that can only go up to 70mph. But that it's ok because no roads have speed limits over that anyways so you'll never need it. And then a year later they tell me that if I buy the cool new bucket seats that they will unlock my car to go over 70mph.

art style is what is going to be needed for next gen gaming.all these middleware engines are making some games look the same.which is rather boring.have you played any of the above listed games i mentioned?probally not.i don't want to see the same wall textures,character model sizes,trees and grass,etc,spread through out all my games.it's like having books with the same cover.the content will be different,but the book will look the same on the outside.that would be a joke to me.

They did not a have many jap games, now they will have 110 by the end of the year and 160 in the US and Europe. Beside I haven't seen any PS3 games that match the quality of Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon, much less Gears of War and Lost Odyssey blows GOW graphics out of the water. BOOM

Absolutely stunning true CGI quality game. No doubt the art style with natural lighting techniques simply makes it a stand-out title. There is no crappy exeggerated usage of insane level of light blooms or 'shiny' surfaces, entirely believable visuals and stunningly real too. Its the art-style that makes it a solid CG-movie like product. Really a power at the PS3 side. AWESOME !!!

PS3 games that are bigger and more complex will be duller because the game is taking a hit because of the lack of memory for color ect. You know why! we talked about this last night stop playing with these guys they'll never admit or figure it out. The PS3s not as powerful as they say it is.

PS3 will be a good console but this will be an repeat of last-gens console to console real world comarisons except the 360 has more dev support than last generation. I'm ten for ten on predictions. MS didn't have much developer support last time around, so it's good to see that they have more devs now. They're still not getting anywhere near as much exclusive support as Sony, but I still see an improvement. It's a bit pathetic how desperate they act sometimes, though. I still remember opening the Konami E3 handbook and there was a huge Microsoft page(s) that said "Dear Mr. Kojima, Jump In." Sounded like a desperate ex-girlfriend dying to get her man back. This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
