Release Day DLC: Good Or Bad?

ObnoxiousGamer: The newest trend in gaming seems to be releasing a game, and then DLC on the same day of its release. Is this a step in the right direction for gaming, or a black eye on the reputation of developers?

A black eye on the reputation of developers.

Letting a publisher know that it's okay to have more and more day-one DLC will eventually turn $60 retail games into cash grabs like free-to-play titles, where you're paying $10 to open up new areas and places already on the game disc or $15 to unlock extra enemies, side-quests and missions that were already stored on the game when it shipped.

EA tried it before and failed but it seems they've succeeded with doing it again using Bioware and Mass Effect 3 as the launch pad. Expect more price gouging from EA and Activision given that everyone who supports day-one DLC are giving them the go-ahead to wallet rape as they please.

It's more of a black eye on the reputation of gamers. Their the ones that allow this to happen by continuing to pay for DLC.

EA is simply doing what any prudent business would do...take full advantage of an monetary opportunity.

And here is Logic with all of his negativity again...

LOGICWINS5190d ago

^^Since when does telling the truth mean that I'm being negative? Does the notion of reality bother you?

If ZERO gamers buy DLC...then developers/publishers will stop releasing DLC since they aren't seeing a return. COMMON SENSE. COMMON SENSE. COMMON SENSE.

It's gamers fault bro.

You gotta admit though, the guy is right. It's our money that gives these guys their jobs. If gamers united and simply didn't buy the game (let's just say for a span of like a month) I doubt they would ever let this Day One DLC tactic see the light of day again.....

When its something cosmetic, no one should care.

When its something which relates to the game's main theme or plot - it crosses the line!

Even day-one map packs isn't as bad as what EA/Bioware's done with ME3. If they were going to do crap like that it should have been applicable to multiplayer. A skin and weapon.

@soundslike:
For one thing, the Prothean is more than something cosmetic. Its represents the very foundation of the game.

for another: how exactly is collecting items ME's main appeal? Making choices that effect the story - seeming to make them - is.

You are an exact example of why gamers are the problem.

soundslike5190d ago

I heavily disagree if part of the games appeal is collecting cosmetic items.

Sidewinder-5190d ago

Disagree.

Take Timesplitters for example. It's whole progression system was based on unlocking new characters i.e. cosmetic changes.

If TS4 was to release now and had this kind of practice going on where you had to pay to unlock the Monkey character for example, people would frickin rage!

Godmars2905190d ago

But monkeys aren't plot central. It would be more accurate to use Buffy-clone as an available "skin in multiplayer - and still you're not talking about the main game.

This is more like having to pay for her to see her in her segments, otherwise there's just air or a CGI mannequin in her place as you play through the single player game.

Kyosuke_Sanada5190d ago

Who remembered when when pre-ordering a game was just to make sure you had a copy of the game instead of a gateway for day one DLC? Pepperidge Farm remembers....

vortis5190d ago

I also remember a time when collector's edition meant getting something tangible as a collector's item, not a "pay 2 win" pass as has become the standard as of late.

Paying for extras like soundtracks, artbooks and collectibles (even multiplayer only DLC collectibles like skins and weapons) is fine but now we're paying extra for extra missions, side-plots and expanses on the main story arc. Nice.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
