Trying to compare Home to anything Microsoft has for the 360 is pointless - Microsoft simply doesn't have anything competitive with Home.

Home has been worked on since the early PS2 days and is a gigantic project.

Home consists of:

* A MMORPG engine at its core

* A state of the art set of technologies for rendering and customizing personal avatars - face, clothes, etc

* A video streaming infrastructure for content from both Sony servers and PS3 owners personal systems

* A set of tools to allow developers and third parties to easily take existing game art and other content and incorporate it into their own Home spaces

* A physics engine for manipulating objects inside of Home

* An expanding set of games within the Home world from simple little arcade games, to medium sized games like bowling and pool, all the way up to eventually full scale mini-MMORPGs right inside of Home. Sony has setup Home so that game developers can port existing or create new games that take place right inside of Home.

* A set of technologies for purchasing things right inside of Home.

* A video rental service where you can watch movies and interact with friends right inside of Home

* A way to meet up with other gamers inside of Home and jump into and back out of online games seamlessly

* Special spaces for online clans to have for everyone to meet up at for before and after gaming matches - all decked out in whatever style the clan wants

* And of course personal PS3 owner's spaces where they can stream images and video to other people they invite into their apartments

The best way to think of Home is a 3D world wide web for gaming where the '3d spaces' inside of Home correspond to individual web pages or web sites. You will have your home page that corresponds to your apartment. And Sony is providing developers the tools to easily create their own spaces. So eventually you will have gaming companies that have their own spaces that are decked out in their own company's look and game's themes.

Sony is also talking with sites like gametrailers.com to have their site have a Home space where their images and videos are streamed right on the walls just as one example. Pretty much anything that is a web page can be turned into Home space.

When Microsoft finally manages to bring online gaming up to Sony's high level of quality by adding dedicated servers to all major games for lagfree online play we can start to talk about what it will take for Microsoft to try to compete with Home eventually.

i play video games all the time, it makes me happy, video games is where i had to go after i broke up with a long relationship, after playin my xbox360 for soo long im dyin for a ps3, but i gotta wait till xmas,

but everything 1up does gives me a headache, i dont go there anymore. but i hear bad press about them against sony all the time,,

Just another bunch of reviewers who are so biased that it is absurd. I don't visit their site... so... whatever. And regarding online.. well, I prefer single player games at the moment. Down here the internet is so slow and unreliable it is not really worth playing online.

I agree their website reviews are questionable and most of them are bias to the 360, however I always enjoy listening to their podcasts. They're pretty good. Close to little bias.

This week was a great one.

And yes, all the features of Home will be available in the PS3's XMB; if you don't like 3D online environments, then you're still cool. Being able to launch any game's multiplayer with your friends from XMB/HOME is a VERY tall order, and I hope Sony can pull it off successfully, because just the concept alone is amazing.

Garnett seems pretty stubborn though. He keeps implying that Home is a Second Life ripoff and that the experience is actually inferior to what PC and Xbox Live offers. He's just way too used to Xbox Live, which is why he can't fathom the idea of meeting people in a 3D environment, passing by strangers who are having audio-based conversations, etc. Too bad he can't get it into his head that Home has two layers.

i don't know about you guys, but i don't listen to this kind of podcasts, it is a waste of time, i prefer playing games in the meanwhile or googling thru the internet for interesting news
even if there is some interesting ideas, it is too long, i prefer if they write a transcript which they won't because they chitchat a lot,

Jealousy will be imminent amongst those who have purchased the green dumpster juice system and Dark Sniper is very mindful of that fact. If Dark Sniper purchased an XBOX 360 and paid yearly fees for an online network just to see it's superior competitor recieve new, refreshing ways to push online technology. I don't know about any one else but my biggest excitement about home is Clan battles and tournaments there going to be so much easer now that you can see how many people are on each team who is fighting now. you can even go over and talk with the other team while your waiting for you match to start, and not just sitting around waiting for a message thinking that they forgot about you. When i see HOME that is what i think of.

a ban should be considered on news coming from fanboys and/or biased sites like 1UP, xboxkings, SDF blablbblabalba .... you get my drift.. those shhhhiiiiitttty news shouldn't be approved

It really does seem like Shane goes through the same debates that alot of PS3 owners do. I have to go through crap like that every single time I purchase a game. I think most of the people on 1up are intelligent about videogames, but very ignorant to their own biases. Some folks like for example Mark Macdonald or Kathleen Sanders ALMOST ALWAYS take a negative stance to anything Sony related and always come up rosey on most things Microsoft related.

Nothing really got out of hand.

I didnt really think there was any bashing, they said bioshock and drake was awsome. Mass effect had it´s flaws but were good. They thought Duke would flopp, they said burnout was a little better on ps3 than 360. Everyone was excited about home but some didnt really think people would use it (that it would be kind of to complicated) but it got defeanded by saying it would be nice to go on home if u dont really know what you want to play (see what other people are playing or see them bowling). And thats pretty much what was said, they did talk a little pc gaming to, but not so much.

i DONT RELALY CARE... I just opened my PS3 yesterday and its the best system I've ever pwned in my life... yes I also have a junkbox... Its just not a PS3... the 360 feels more like a toy. Biased would be if a news outlet reports all the negatives on one party and ignores the negatives of another, and only reports positives of that party. This is a dumb argument. People should realize that a lot of those things like trophies should never be released now because no one would really be enticed to try Home. Who wants to try Home if everything that is the backbone of Home is already out? Home is expanding on the big attchment of social networks, but adding the video game aspect.

Another thing is comparing Second Life and Home is a horrible comparison. Home has a lot more involved in the core design where as Second Life just seems like you are doing nothing. Second Life is the core game compared to Home which is just the appetizer to the main course which is actually playing a game. Allowing people to share music, videos and all these other things while being able to voice chat or text, and at anytime jumping into a game or going to the many other activities going on in the "world" is amazing. Although I'm not big on MMO's or interactive experiences that mimic real life, I'm excited to see how Home expands on the idea of connecting with your friends and playing video games.

This was on of the better 1up yours podcast episodes. I don't care what any of you say out of my 40 something podcasts, 1up yours is the #1 podcast I look forward to listening every week. The reason being is the 1up yours people aren't afraid to put there thoughts into gaming and they also have the knowledge to back it up.

A fight between two fanboys at 1up really got people mobilized to their respective sides and are now duking it out against the other side. This is one of those articles that really brings out the emotion from both sides.

this is a genuine inquiry, not a post intended to start a flamewar - what is Home going to give people above and beyond what live gives on the 360?

I'm not saying Home wont be better than what live provides, it could be massively better, but from what i understand, its going to provide:

- Trophy room of some sort = Achievements
- Video store = Xbox live market place
- Chat = Live has it
- Video arcade = xbla
- Custom avatars etc = no equivalent there of course - sort of like an MMO style second-life interface thing instead of a bog-standard menu system - nice touch but will people who just want to play games really care that much?
- Did read somewhere about clan battles - xbl doesnt have this but it has been identified as a future enhancement that i think is under development, not sure if its the same extent to home though.

I might be missing the point, and i apologise if my lack of exposure to the coverage of homes features means i'm not fully conversant with what its intended to do, but is it not just a community engine of sorts for the ps3 that will provide some of the features currently available on the 360?

Please dont misunderstand me here - i want my ps3 to be as functionally rich as my 360 - right now the online gaming experience (in my opinion) doesnt measure up on the ps3, and i really do hope it does catch up in time for games like KZ2 to take advantage of it.

I cant see myself using home that much, if only because i like throwing a disk into my ps3 and firing it up straight away (or mucking about with remote play which is freaking awesome!) and perhaps i'm not really in the demographic sony are after anyway. Proper games are what i'm looking forward to next year really.

Not everyone knows what exactly HOME has to offer other than whats been reported. Im sure there is plenty more. However, im sure that it wont be a failure. Sony had not once let me down and i know they are working hard on this project. Whats funny is the fact the M$ wants to do the same thing in the future. they all have differing opinions on things. I share many of shane's opinions on games, but the dude who liked mass effect didnt. In fact i think two or so of them slaughtered mass effect.

I've got the game and i enjoy but i agree with the other speakers in that podcast. Bioware overhyped, and the game doesnt deliver as much as past offerings from them; namely kotor. In kotor the characters in your party responded in logical ways and realistic ways; not realistic enough but better than Mass effect. Nothing seems to have much life in it. I love jrpgs so this does annoy me when i play Mass, considering near enough all jrpgs have worlds with interesting npcs who have personas. I mean you could fairly call them cliche, but hell mass effect is just another bundle of cliches. to thos who may not believe i have the game.
I'm 6 and half hours in, and i'm on feros in the colony. I'm looking for the matriach whose daughter i need to also look for. Driving the mako drove me insane when trying to pwn the geth on that highway. In the sewer there's that guy who's insane (dont know why yet) and you have to open three water valves for that woman.

Months i've been saying that the approach naughty dog takes with uncharted makes more sense as the characters really seem alive.

back to the home thing, didnt you realize listening to that podcast that the guy complaining was countered sucessfully. He was kinda being whiny "ooh i wanna get straight into the game"

i read CS excellently laid fact sheet @ #8 about what innovations, and infrastructure that is going in to HOME. Im not bashing HOME, I just cant fathom how it can be or remain free with the amount of work going into it?

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
