Xbox 720: why Microsoft should keep the Xbox 360 controller

OXM's Matt Lees gets to grips with Xbox's future.

MrGunny945199d ago (Edited 5199d ago )

Yup, i love it, just improve to use batterys and a less heavy back part

Nate-Dog5199d ago

Yeah, I have no idea why you still don't get controllers with a USB-rechargeable battery pack with new X360 consoles.

SixZeroFour5199d ago

i may be misinterpreting what you are trying to say (seeing as how i dont have a ps3) but are you talking about the plug n play that 360 already has?

its a usb attachment that plugs into you controller, and while its connected, it charges your controller even if you are using it...it can also be used alone without batteries in the controller (which i do sometimes) to turn it into a flat out wired controller

Chug5199d ago

I think he's saying it's bs how you have to throw down another $20 for a charge and play kit when it should be standard.

Nate-Dog5199d ago

@SixZeroFour: Basically what Chug said. You only get a pack with new X360 controllers into which you can put batteries, but once the batteries you get to put into that pack are gone you have to either buy more batteries, buy rechargeable batteries (and a rechargeable battery charger too) or buy one of the MS products for the X360 which give you rechargeable batteries via USB. I got an X360 last year but even though I don't use it that often I've had to spend around an extra €20 on more packs so far.

EVILDEAD3605198d ago

Best controller in the industry..definately dont need to change it.

Evil

saladthieves5198d ago

I appreciate the fact that the batteries can be replaced, without changing the whole controller or tethering it to the console to recharge while playing. However it is annoying that the rechargeable pack is sold separately.

It SHOULD ship with every controller, basic or not. We shouldn't have to pay extra for this basic feature. It's a way for Microsoft to nickle and dime everything.

Patriots_Pride5199d ago

Yes the the built in rechargeable battery is a must for the 369 controller and a better D-Pad but I do not agree about the heavy part because I like to feel some weight when holding a controller - that's my gripe with the PS3 controller it feels really light which gives it that cheap plastic feeling.

Another thing I want on the PS3 controller is the ability to Synch my controller with my PS3 with put having to plug in a USB cord and to start my PS3 with the controller by pressing the home button.

saladthieves5198d ago

True with the syncing part. However I like how you can quickly assign a PS3 controller a different number with ease, without having to turn off the controller.

The 360 controller is a very fine sturdy piece of hardware. That controller thing is tough. I accidentally stepped on one placed on the floor and it nearly destroyed my foot.

Anon19745198d ago

Aside from the dodgy D-Pad, fantastic controller layout. I just hate the $20 extra for the "Play and Charge" kit. I also have an issue with the battery life in those kits. I've had to go through 4 of those battery backs that simply refuse to hold a charge over only a year or so. If you aren't playing them and recharging them all the time (my 360 isn't my primary console) they seem to get shot and fast. I take them out now between gaming sessions to preserve the damn things as sometimes I don't use them for a couple of months and it's just a pain in the ass.

By contrast, I still have my PS3 controllers from launch (the old, non-dual shock ones) and even though I never use those unless one of my DS ones goes dead, they always still seem to have their charge from months ago - and I haven't had a single issue with one refusing to hold a charge.

I don't think MS has to change anything about the controller layout the next time around, just fix the d-pad, put in a better battery standard (ya cheap bastards) and why not, just for the helluva it, make it a standard usb cord for charging so I don't need a special, MS cord and I can just use other usb cords I probably have lying around anyway, like others have mentioned.

hellvaguy5198d ago

The only battery packs Ive ever had problems last under several years are the 3rd party ones. And also ALL batteries (power tools, controllers, w/e) should never be left dead for longer then 1 month or you assign the battery pack a slow death with each additional month that passes with no charge.

360GamerFG5199d ago

Keep the new d-pad, improve the shoulder buttons and you have yourself the perfect controller

Spydiggity5199d ago (Edited 5199d ago )

ppl gonna think i'm weird for sayin this...but i think there should be 2 more buttons where your ring fingers are. and they should be bindable to whatever action you want.

in fact, that's my number one wish for next generation controllers...i want to be able to fully customize my key (button) bindings.

lorianguy5199d ago

There's a limited edition Battlefield controller with the back trigger split into two I think.

I could have dreamt it up though :/

iamgoatman5199d ago

A couple more buttons would be nice, make use of your ring or little fingers, or both. Although placing buttons on the back of the controller where you primarily grip the controller could be a problem and lead to accidentally pressing buttons.

Key binding should be a must though, also I'd love to be able to calibrate dead zones and change acceleration strengths as too much of both can be almost unplayable, e.g. Far Cry 2.

TheDareDevil5199d ago

Some Razr controller has 2 more more buttons there

jthamind5199d ago

i agree. i don't want them to change the current controller, just make a few tweaks to it. i love the size, weight, shape, and triggers.

tigertron5199d ago

Just give us a USB-rechargeable battery like the Dualshock 3 and I'll be happy.

SixZeroFour5199d ago

you mean like the plug n play for xbox 360?

RedDead5199d ago

Ones that come with the controller(don't have to pay extra for them) and don't stick out of the back of the controller.

That's the only thing I want changed as well. 360 controller is the best i've ever had.

tigertron5199d ago

Yeah, but built in and not as an accessory.

SixZeroFour5199d ago

ah i see, ive been so accustomed to using the wireless controller that the extra room in the back of wired 360 controllers just feel weird to me lol...plus i like the weight the battery pack adds, makes the controller feel solid (personal preference)

i also see what you mean about it being a separate purchase, i thought you guys thought there wasnt such a product available in general...i too would prefer it to be bundled, but seeing as it comes with a battery pack as well, i think it justifies the purchase

JellyJelly5199d ago

What do you do with your DualShock3 when the built-in battery is worn out and doesn't charge anymore?

You have to buy a new controller. With the 360 controller you can just replace the battery pack.

Chug5199d ago (Edited 5199d ago )

@jelly

I have ps3 controllers from 2006 that still work just fine.

arnyftw5199d ago

@Reddead. If they dont stick out the back then the controller will feel really weird. And I share Jelly's concern about the batteries wearing out. I have friend's whose ps3 controllers dont charge anymore so they have to keep it constantly plugged in. I would rather have something that I could easily replace. Maybe have a plug and play kit come as standard with the xbox.

Dorwrath5199d ago

Nah I rather pay $9.99 for a new rechargeable battery pack than $50 for a controller that has them built in.

Hatmantc5199d ago

True but unless you abuse them the controllers last for years on end.

Chug5199d ago

Or you could have Sony replace your controller for free.

http://www.joystiq.com/2006...

Prophet-Gamer5199d ago

But doesn't the 360 controller cost $50 even without the rechargeable battery?

monkey nuts5199d ago

Well I bought the new 360 controller (pop out d-pad when you spin it) with the play and charge kit bundled for £25. My old play and charge kit stopped working by the way......... DunDun Deeeerrrrrr!

NeoTribe5198d ago

I still have the first controller from when ps3 came out. Takes like 10 min to fully charge it and ur good for along time still. They don't go bad. The controller itself looks like hell on earth lol. Rubber missin off joysticks and all but it charges and lasts as long as the day I bought it.

Krew_925198d ago

@ Jelly Jelly

Actually you can open a PS3 controller, and replace the battery yourself. Not that I have used it.

I've owned a PS3 since 2007, and all the controllers work, and last just as new.

mysterym5198d ago

I like the dual shock 3 usb rechargable batteries but need a longer cable as a standard usb cable is just too short unless you live in a cereal box.

000000000000000000015199d ago

With a battery pack you never need to plug your controller in, you just swap in a new pack. That way you always have a wireless controller. I hate the PS3 controller and the fact you just start playing and time to plug it in to recharge. The only solution is to have two controller for eveyone playing.

lorianguy5199d ago

You can use it while it charges too...

The controller's aren't very different when it comes to power.

NnT32915199d ago

I never thought of that,my ps3 is just 3 metres away from my couch.

Hatmantc5199d ago

If you have a usb charger or laptop next to you, you never have to stop using a PS3 controller

PirateThom5199d ago

Or just connect it to any computer or device with USB... doesn't need to be connected to the PS3 to charge. Hell, charge it off a 360 or Wii if you want.

NeoTribe5198d ago

Ur being overdramatic. Its not that crazy. First of all when its fully charged it lasts a very long time. When it needs charging u simply plug it when ur playin for like 10 min and ur good to go. They charge very fast. Not once have I gotten pissed about charging my controllers.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn224d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn224d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown24d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay24d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac23d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger24d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300024d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde24d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde24d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_23d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
