IEEE survey: Microsoft is software industry's leading innovator

Surprisingly, IEEE's recent patent portfolio survey ranked Microsoft as No. 1 in terms of the overall quality, and more importantly, scientific value of its patent portfolio. (See the first chart attached below.) But the ranking is not solely about the number of patents (IBM leads that list, as the The Patent Board Survey shows - see the second chart.) It's also about the utility and scientific strength of patents, which puts Microsoft in first place, according to The Patent Board:

"Second-place Microsoft is clearly on the rise with the highest Science Strength score, which rates the degree to which its patent portfolio is linked to core science," said (The Patent Board.) "In addition, Microsoft posted double-digit growth in nearly every category that we analyze, including Industry Impact, Technology Strength, Science Strength, and Research Intensity. From a quantitative perspective, Microsoft had 94 percent growth in the number of IT patents filed, versus only 30 percent growth for IBM and 16 percent growth from third-ranked Hewlett-Packard."

[ The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE is an international non-profit, professional organization for the advancement of technology related to electricity. It is the leading and largest of any technical professional organization in the world, with more than 360,000 members in around 175 countries. ]

Tell me anything of Microsoft that is NOT Bought out or copied!

Former Sun Microsystems chief executive Scott McNealy

"Microsoft never produced technology except by buying it, Name one thing they've ever invented on their own? Seriously, name one! If you think of any, send me an e-mail, and I'll research it to find out who they bought it from.... R&D [research and development] and M&A [mergers and acquisitions] are the same thing over there."

ktchong6729d ago (Edited 6729d ago )

Sun Microsystem is no. 6 on the list. And they are one of Microsoft's most vocal antagonists.

Let me guess: and now you guys are going to say the *IEEE* is biased or getting paid by Microsoft. LOL.

CRIMS0N_W0LF6729d ago

Sun Microsystem are now bought by Microsoft. You really know nothing fanboy.

the_round_peg6729d ago

When did Microsoft buy Sun Microsystem? What dimension did you come from?

BrianC62346729d ago

I wonder how much Microsoft paid to get this honor? They're the least creative software company in the world. No way do they deserve this. What a joke.

ublender6729d ago (Edited 6729d ago )

Very true and appropriate quote Wolf, gj. Except, Sun was not bought by Microsoft, wtf did that come from?

CRIMS0N_W0LF6729d ago

ok I admit I took at mistake.

Though doesn't change the fact microsoft is far from innovtive.

Microsoft is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and successful companies out there and never fail to provide products of the highest quality

Power of Blu6729d ago

I think you misunderstand the meaning of innovative.

Then again, from reading your posts you seem to be lacking in understanding of many things.

the_round_peg6729d ago

Sooo, Pee-Ass 3001s, I suppose you know the meaning of innovation better than the IEEE, do you?

Afterburn6729d ago (Edited 6729d ago )

get back on your medication.

Ju6729d ago (Edited 6729d ago )

"never fail to provide products of the highest quality" ... now I really start to understand you. You try to stir up people, right?
cough,cough....rrod...VistaSP 3...aehem...cough,cough

What is remarkable, though, is that the IEEE (electrical! == HW!) recognizes a SW firm as the most innovative company. I really have a hard time believing that. So, what HW products - beside a steering wheel, a mouse and a keyboard has M$ actually invented(*), which works ? 360 ? Yeah, very innovative. Zune ? same.

(*) lets extend "invented" to "produced"...

They copied windows from Mac O/S.
They copied Java from Sun.
They copied Internet Explorer from Netscape.
They copied Office from every other word processing application.
They copied your precious Xbox from PS2.
Name me just one application that was originally created by MS or wasn't brought from another company.

Sony Computer Entertainment is the undisputed market leader in technology and innovation. Since 1994, Sony has taken the electronics industry by storm with the Playstation. Since then, the growth of Sony has transformed their image as the industry giant and award winning software providers to this date.

JOLLY16729d ago

You seriously in your mind can connect sony with award winning.....software? Holy wow, that is awesome. They usually have great hardware, but their software is poo poo.

Afterburn6729d ago

but I'm betting there is a lampshade made from human skin somewhere in his home.

Fezthebest6729d ago

sony is amazing in hardware, but i kinda disagree that sony is leading in software, im sorry they dont have any in software that is like amazing. But for sure microsoft does not belong there either, like what innovation do they have. VISTA LOL is good and all but a total copy off apple, and it doenst even function as well either.
