i jus read the article with yoshida guy b.s he never said we will develop less games every year he just pin pointed how others do and its why they focus on each title more but i think sony wnt change they love us gamers and love giving us games.

Develop the same amount of games but spread them out more, giving each one it's own time to shine with marketing.

Last year was a very good year and this year is already off to a good start with the Vita coming out. I don't want things to change, unless they slow down development for the PS3 so that we can have a great launch lineup for the PS4.

Starhawk beta is a hell of a lot of fun, damn original to. Runs great. Will it sell Gears or Halo numbers? Absolutely not, but it will sell enough to keep the fans busy for at least 2 years, like MAG still does. That's what matters to me, I'm not a shareholder.

They are doing right by having all these new IP's and hammering out what they have to do next, which is streamline the psn on everything. I know it cost them now, but in the future things will change when Microsoft is still making casual games, and the ps3 will surpass even the almighty big N when it comes to gaming brand loyalty and awesome sales.

Spread them out though. 2 in Jan-Feb, because we know no one realeases games in December because they would miss out on a VGA mention, so realeasing 2, 1 in jan and 1 in feb would make up for it. Then one in late May, one in July. None in August and unleash a good one in Sept. Then of coure your biggest game in Nov. This way gamers aren't overwhelmed, and they can save money to get all the games they really want.

Why? I own a PlayStation because I enjoy all these games. Is it harder to make them sell like blockbusters like Gears? Yeah. But in the long run you have 7 games release, all 7 games make at LEAST 1 million in sales, thats AT LEAST 7 million dollars. Spread out to 7 different companies that will innovate in 7 different ways.

Gears selling 5 million units is great, but look at the other effects of it. 5 million sales, going to one game, to one studio, that innovates in one way. Instead of taking that money and putting into more games, MS put it into advertising. Kinect could be awesome (look at what other people are doing with it), their games could be awesome, their service could be better, but instead they advertise.

Gears sold so much because you have this crap ton of Xbox players sitting there bored, then suddenly a good game comes out and they all rush to buy it to support their console. You release a game like Gears 6 to 7 times in a year, it sells WELL (not amazing) and what is the big deal?

When you're talking about number of sales it ALWAYS comes down to marketing. A good salesman could sell sand in a desert.

I like how multiple games come out for Sony cause it gives you different choice of variety to pick from. Ms games do sell more but its so boring having to keep picking shooters all the time. I would have to agree. They over feed gamers and spread out the market to much. I think Microsoft has it right you release one or two big hits and people jump on them. However I personally like most of the game that they release but I think they need a strategy meeting on the release / marketing of games.

Sony dosent just have gran turismo. Metal gear solid 4 ad uncharted 2 are both past 5 million in sales. Each gears of war game sells around 5 million.

How about support them more like infamous and resistance with better advertising then just leaving it out there to fend itself in the market.

That would be best and the longer games are developed the greater potential it has to be of higher quality so I'm fine with that.

Marketing does play apart, however great games are great games and poor games are poor games.

ie. I saw plenty of Resistance 3 marketing, yet the title has sold poorly. Why? Well simply because it's an average at best franchise. Killzone, Infamous, etc are all just average at best franchises. The launch titles of these franchises that started off this gen sold well simply because there were no games. Now that there is plenty of games and competition on the PS3 console from 1st and 3rd parties, people have more choice which titles to spend their money on.

This gen for me, there has only been a very very small handful of 1st party games on the PS3 that I cared about. MGS4, LBP, Lair, Killzone 2 (simply because of the graphics but the game still was a let down). Uncharted franchise I borrowed, played each once and never plan on touching them again since there is no reason to go back due to straight forward story and an absolute atrocious multiplayer.

Sony has been bleeding money this gen simply because they produce so much hardware and software across the board. Sure you can say "well that's great for the gamers" but is it really? If it was so great for the gamers....then why is nobody buying Sony's gaming products? Vita was DOA, PS3 has been in 3rd place since it's launch and 1st party titles seldom sell and their SEN (PSN)hack that occurred last summer set them back millions, money in which they really weren't planning on using for a SEN (PSN) upkeep. A gamer will know what games are coming out. They don't need adverts on TV to tell them.

Sony is still going to release hardware and software, but expect a whole new Sony come next gen IF they release a PS4. We already know Sony is reconstructing their whole corporation. They are not doing that for giggles. And don't expect the next Console to be leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3, as Sony has already stated that it won't be.

The Gran Turismo series has been around longer, and, is popular in Japan, that may partly explain the increased sales compared to Forza. The core Halo games (Halo 3, Halo Reach) have sold gangbusters. Halo Anniversary and Halo 3 ODST have sold reasonably well but nowhere near the core Halo games. Incidently, I am expecting Halo 4 to be the biggest selling Halo game. I do expect Sony to slightly reduce their first party game output in response to their current financial difficulties.

Finally they speak sense.

I love Playstation. Games! Games! Games! That's why I love them but I think they do need to step up their marketing a little bit. My friends here in Canada are brainwashed by those Xbox ads :(

The thing no one is looking at is the fact EPIC owns the gears IP - not MS. While we don't know the details about their exclusivity contract with Microsoft you can bet it wasn't cheap. So in essence that game may have sold 5million copies, but how much did MS actually make from that 5 mill? Meanwhile, Sony double dipped on profiting from publisher/platform holder royalties on almost all of their exclusive titles. Sales numbers don't equal profit.

releasing to many exclusives gives people to many choices. one or two games are gonna sell more than the others. its the choices that hurt sales. i cant afford to buy all the exclusives. just the ones i want. in the end, the other exclusives won't make any profit. i think were on the same boat. limit the exclusives, in the end you will save millions

I actually think that some of Sony's current woes originated with the launch of the PS2; they overhyped the consoles 'emotion' engine capabilities, and, the PS2 was also difficult to code (compared to PS1). I think that there will be a PS4 however, Sony have a large and very loyal fan base that has the potential to generate good returns (if done right). But I think it will be a more back to basics approach, a relatively simple and cost effective console with a focus on fewer first party games with more marketing push. Dare I say it, similar to the Microsoft approach that has been successful (to the angst of many core gamers).

I know I'm going to get a lot of dislikes for this but I knew they would say this eventually. It's all your people's fault too. I'm just astounded by all the bragging us Ps3 fans do about exclusive yet you don't freaking buy them. And that's what pisses me off like honestly. Resistance 3 is one of the best shooters I've played in a while and the game got piss poor sales; Demons souls is one of the best RPG's and it got piss poor sales, like wtf people wake the hell up. Activision and Microsoft keeps throwing the same games for the past couple of years and despite all the hate people still buy them and I mean a lot of people buy them which makes no sense to me. Ps3 fans brag about exclusives they don't buy and Halo and COD haters still buy their recent games. I believe it is ok to want to make a lot of games but try not to flood the release calendar that it gets too crowded. There were so many games that i wanted to get but just did not have the time to play them all if i did.

I am grateful that Sony is so dedicated to release games for us but i may not be the only one to say 'Slow down' & give us gamers a breather sometimes. Also with the fewer first party games released a year the more time Sony can advertise them more. Fans of these games will always return to them but it is important to also gather new fans for them, but if they do not know anything about the game or see anything they are less likely to notice.

I think that another reason exclusives are becoming less important nowadays is the large number of third party game releases each year and the massive amount of content we now get in games (including DLC which extends the life of games). I play games about twice a week and pretty much only play Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3 and F1 2011. The first two games, in particular, have a lot of different game modes including campaign and quite a few multi-player variants. Compare this with games from 7-8 years ago where there would be limited game modes (and no DLC). One game nowadays has probably double or triple the content. I could easily play Battlefield 3 twice a week and not even touch the other games.

My point is, there are so many games nowadays (and with so much content) many gamers like me not only buy limited numbers of exclusives but limited numbers of games period.

Sony doesn't do enough marketing. I know when a Gears of War or Halo game is out. It's harder to know when any big PS3 exclusives come out. They need to quadruple their efforts.

I don't think it has to do with poor marketing, I think it has to do with Sony losing a lot of fans to Microsoft, mainly American fans that would be buying all of Sony's exclusives just like they did last gen. American gamers are the ones that buy games in the masses and on impulse. PS3 is a more European dominated console while Xbox rules in America. Sony's shooters that did not sell well this year like Socom 4, Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 would sell much more on Xbox. Well I guess you could intertwine all of that with marketing because fans do a lot of marketing and when most of American gamers game on Xbox you lose word of mouth marketing.

If you look at Socom, always an American dominated game sell over 8 million copies last gen on PS2 and then this gen not even 2 million I think it's clear where your audience went.

So MS releasing 2 to 3 games a year is paying off, and Sony just now realizing it from what Iv'e read. But Sony has the backbone to do Exclusive titles Honestly, that's MS move and Sony does not need to go down that route but then again Sony has been bleeding money and by publishing all these games probably isn't helping. MS has Halo, Minecraft, Deadlight, Witcher 2, and Alan Wake American Nightmare and hopefully more things down the line. better than last years line up, It just comes to show Multiplat titles is where its at.

Sony's problem is using fanboy's rants for corporate judgment. Fanboys holler about exclusives and then fail to support them. They wait for them to go on sale for a third off and wonder why the company is having trouble.

I always got disagrees when I comment that Microsoft's strategy of buying exclusivity on promising IPs was smarter than buying developers and doing a bunch of in-house exclusives. Somehow some fanboys still don't get it.

Sony can continue to cater to fanboys or they can try to save their company. BBB+ stock rating is a few steps away from junk bond status. Sony might have to cut back on games, continue to support the PS3 and go the way of Sega for the next generation. If they keep up their current direction they will be making a lot fewer games and everything else because they will be bankrupt.

There is two ways this can work.

One: They stop developing so many games and focus on console features and massive advertising budgets, and get tons of "gamers" to buy their console. Which leads more to a entertainment device/social platform, rather than a gaming console.

Two: They continue to take risks, develop games as their main selling point, but space them out so we don't get more than 5 exclusives per year (I'd say keep at around 2-3). This way they won't cannibalize their game advertising budgets themselves, and the PS owners wont go broke, which would allow us to buy more of their games.

At least if Sony stopped developing so many big budget games, they can get some of their developers on making PSN(SEN) games that are a bit more creative, and allow them to make games that don't have to play, look, or have the scope of games like Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, or Littlebigplanet.

I'm interested in how this will all pan out. I'm just hoping Sony makes the right decisions as they aren't in the best position to mess it up at the moment.

My trust is in Kaz, PS3 gamers need some refreshing changes in my opinion.

Well I saw this coming years ago. Sony has the highest operating costs in the gaming industry with all those IP studios producing games while their market share is eroding. It took Sony this the gaming industrybhas changed they're no longer the dominating giant in video games. Some first party titles will sell and others won't and it's a huge loss for the studios and Sony.
It sounds as though they're ready to take another direction and follow MS foot steps release 3-4 exclusives per year and let the third party software sell the console.

As much as I love my PS3 I think he might be right. I don't want to see them slow down to Microsoft's rate of exclusive production, that's a little too slow for me. But I think some of their games could be better or have a shorter production time if their money wasn't spread as thin.

Fact exclusives matter, exclusives was never called exclusives back in my day but it was what parted 2 consoles and from there started the real console future.
What am i talking about EASY SEGA VS NINTENDO or Mario vs Sonic but back then we were real gamers.. But "as it has not many choices of exclusives" also applies to the PS3. There are certainly loads more but there are still not that many compared to the mighty PS2 or even the original Xbox (infact, the PS3 and 360 have less exclusives than any other successful console that has been around in my lifetime)

The only PS3 exclusives which I, personally, am interested in are MGS (which is now going multi >_< and I don't think MGR:R is even going to hit the spot for me which is always what seems to happen when a PS game goes multi) and GoW, which also got worse this gen. So if you don't like most of the Sony exclusives (like me) then you don't have that many of them to choose from - compared to any previous console generation which I have lived through that is, I play multis on my PC so that leaves my PS3 sitting pretty gathering dust - I wouldn't have bought it if I knew FF was going to turn to junk and become multi, if I knew GTA was going to have content stripped to fit on a tiny DVD, if I knew GoW was going to turn sour, if I knew they were going to strip all the content from GT and make you download it separately (honestly that game took so long to make and has no content compared to the previous installments), that said I wouldn't have bought a 360 either if I knew MS were going to diarrhoea all over gamers' faces - but it's fine because they made a loss from my custom on the console (which they also had to fix twice) and I have only bought 2 new games (guess what, Halo 3 and Reach) for them to get royalties from.

Choice is a good thing. More choices allows for diversity and a truly compelling line up for your console. If people cannot see that and embrace it by purchasing some of these offerings, well we can only blame ourselves.

Once again I hope that Microsoft leaves gaming soon. They are destroying it with their dumbed down directX pc for the living room. For those that support MS, take a look at their track record. They go after a sector/competitor and compete with them until they go under. They do this with under handed tactics and in some cases simply BUY the segment (you don't think it is a coincidence that there are deals for 360's run almost every week do you..rebates 50 off, 100 off MS PAYS for those). Then when by either attrition or the competitor gives up they take control of the segment. The segment then falters and fizzles and no innovation will occur.

If that is what you want for gaming. Keep supporting them. Micro payments, dashboard advertising, paying to play online, all are so much fun. Imagine what MS would do if they faced no competition. 90.00 games that require renewal to play, advertisements would increase on the dash, and perhaps even in the games themselves. Imagine Gears of War 4 sponsored by Doritos. That kill was 'cool ranch'....

MS has already stated that they want the living room. Gaming is simply a step to get them there. They have few first party offerings so it is of little surprise that the title or two they release (which is advertised with a kings ransom) sells. It is the ONLY offering.

Having a console with quite so many games with shooting elements (Killzone 2/3, Uncharted, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4, even Ratchet and Clank) and then having a lower number of third party games than the Xbox360, is not necessarily a way to have a broad base. It's the PS3 that actually comes across more as the shooter game fan's console. The Xbox360 has Kameo, Viva Pinata, Banjo Nuts and Bolts, Kinect games. The Xbox360 was designed from the start as a console for broad tastes.

Coupled with the fact that the Kinect feels like a distinct concept (even if it as an evolution of the Eye Toy) from the Wii and the Xbox360 comes across as a proper family console. Whereas the PS3 comes across as a hardcore console that makes half hearted steps in to family gaming.

Microsoft made sure that they got good exclusives for the first day of the Xbox360. Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo may sometimes divide opinion now but they were solid, colourful, games to demonstrate not only the technology of the console but of the new HDTVS. It's only really Uncharted that makes the PS3 seem particularly 'colourful' to me.

I think that the PS2 was very fortunate from the breadth of its third party exclusive releases - and its relatively early release- to achieve the sales that it did. But the PS3 doesn't have that breadth of third party exclusive releases. The PS3 line up just looks a bit samey and less colourful than the competition which has so studiously courted younger gamers. And the game that might have made the PS3 attractive to younger gamers, Little Big Planet, sounds too much like hard work- mind you, so does Nuts and Bolts.

Sony could have done with something like Disneyland Adventures to quietly generate interest amongst people buying one of their first consoles instead of such hardcore exclusives, for a fickler older market with less time on its hands, dominating all the time.

How did this thread turn into a Microsoft bashing course? Anyway I think it is a good move for Sony from a business standpoint. They will still release great games and do proper advertising so they will sell like they should. It really doesn't bother me because I couldn't possibly play every exclusive that was released in the past eight months or so. Exclusives are great, but I really cannot see where people have time to play all of them. At least with this strategy the best games will be made better and sell better due to proper advertising. It really is a good thing especially when the company isn't doing very well financially.

A better operating system. as much as i hatenthe xbos (and will never buy one) they need a mucher better thought out OS. it seems as though Vita shows that is is the case, so im happy.

Remeber xbox released first with crap games but once a kid has the new system his friends will get the same one so they can play together. simple concept. its those high school and middle school boys that drive the sales of the xbox.

Im old enough to recognize what M$ has done to gaming and have plenty of money, which allows me to vote against them. i do however lack the TIME that the kids have to play.

As far as im concerned M$ has done the same thing as last gen except in addition to not innovating new IPs they have pushed the overall price of gaming higher just because they eanted to be paid as the middle man. I am totally against this. justify it by saying, "its only $$ a month" but the point alone is what i am against.

Sony needs to do what is best for their company. Are they suppose to go bankrupt to please fanboys. There seems to be alot of hate towards Microsoft on this sight. It seems that they know their customers better than Sony does. They seem to know what people are willing to pay for. You have to give the people what they want not what you think they want.

The secret to business is to maximize your profit with the least amount of effort possible. With the money they generate from live subscriptions alone is enough to ensure that SEN/PSN will not be free next gen. I can guarantee that for sure.

I know people here seem angry about this, but to me I think people are just wanting Sony to make more exclusives so that they can brag about them without actually buying them.

I bought a handful of Sony exclusives last year (LBP2, U3, R3 and KZ3), the others didn't really interest me. I know Sony probably had a ton more that I cant even remember, but I think that is the problem.

Sony cant go on making all of these exclusives that nobody is buying. Right away people see Gears 3 and go on the offensive, which isn't really right.

Would people rather Sony keep putting millions into these games and then go broke or out of the gaming business?

Did anyone here actually buy every Sony exclusive? is anyone here actually into every genre and every Sony exclusive? or would have have rather seen a few fewer exclusives and a little more support for some of the better ones?

It's tough to say really, for me I'd rather some of those great games to get the advertisements and support they deserve. I could care less about beating my chest over numbers of exclusives.

You need to look at the big picture, I don't think Sony will stop taking some risks, but it's obvious they cant continue to compete against themselves.

Can't honestly say i've read so much rubbish in the form of some of these comments. As much as it might please Sony fans that there are all these exclusives selling just about 2 million thereabout, it doesn't please Sony one lttle bit. And as much as some of you guys think it's for the fans that they do this stuff, they're purely from a business view here and so your desires wont be as much a consideration unless there is a good return for them on it

PS3 is an awesome machine when it comes down to it, but i think the problem and the reason for why people dislike Sony most, is the mentality of a majority of fanbase. Some of the comments here border on absurd

Like old days. We had good games and bad games. Now we have cod,me,gears,gta,halo,killzone ,gow and the rest of the crap.

I think Sev needs to find better writers that can do a better job.

the competitions sells a little more while having FAR less of there own games for sale, why should sony go to all the effort of making game after game when it doesn't pay off??

Sony pumps out all these great exclusives, meanwhile people don't give a shit and buy 360s with Kinect bundle. What do you think is going to happen to the exclusives? Yeah, competition; great.

Fewer exclusives could mean 1 or 2 less games a year which wouldn't be that bad. If Sony can save 20 million for advertising a huge game for the holidays there's nothing wrong with that. Or maybe use that money to advertise Move.

They kill off too many of my fave developers, like they have already done with cambridge & london studios, then they will lose even more of there fanbase.

They need to bring back the 3rd person platformer that has all but been killed off & enjoys massive success on Wii, both critically & comercially.

Marketing has been all but absent since the PS1 heyday.....Sony thought a couple of brilliant, but artsy fartsy commercials could carry them through PS2 & PS3. There marketing approach emulates art in that they have taken the minimilistic route, in thinking less is more, as well as the full arthouse type ads that fail to show what a game is truly like, from strickly a gameplay point..all developers need to start showing gameplay over damn CGI sequences, as people ain't fooled by mind blowing CGI that is trying to be palmed off as gameplay, or in game video sequences.

Sony need what they currently have, they just have to market it to the casuals better..... They lost enough with Insomniac (& believe me, they've lost Insomniac) with Resistance going to another developer, Ratchet's latest effort already going south....Insomniac will suffer & be gobbled up by a EA or Activision, there best employees pilfered off to the COD's & BF's, as sales won't be strong enough for the big guys likings.

Sony lose there awesome yearly round up of inhouse quality, & many more gamers will jump over to 720 & Wii-U. And if they lose to many of my fave developers....I could be one of those.

The exclusives are the main reason I own a PS3, Sony IPs are great! They have the best stable of in house development, almost every game they put out are classics. I don't see any reason for stopping now, keep em coming!

To many games to focus on with iffy marketing versus 2 or 3 games to focus on with mega million dollar budgets. hmm.

So one spends money on games, while the other spends mega bucks on marketing. That's what I'm getting out of this.
