PS3 Firmware Holds Amazing New Feature… Dropbox Support

TG writes: With the release of PS3 firmware v4.10, gamers across the PlayStation Network are now not only scurrying around their consoles to find new, and often hidden features added by Sony, but are also exploring the upgraded web browser. However, with that upgraded browser now comes support for what could be considered a killer app on the PS3… Dropbox support.

YES!

Works great for downloading!

fluffydelusions5226d ago

It's like a just woke up from a coma or something..srly. New browser, dropbox wat?? I haven't turned on my PS3 in 2 days when did this happen?

nveenio5226d ago

You haven't turned on your PS3 in two days? Dude....you're missing out...

SonyNGP5225d ago

I haven't powered on my PS3 in weeks.

frostypants5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

I hate to say it, but the PS3 browser is now slower to load everything for me than it was before. Yeah, it renders better, but it takes a lot longer to do it. Hopefully it's just something on my end.

Anyone else notice this? Could just be my router or something.

irepbtown5225d ago

Just turned on my PS3, so its updating right now.
This sounds sweeeeet with a little bit of sugar on top.

nanometric5225d ago

Honestly, I haven't powered mine in months, damn Team Fortress 2 eating away all my gaming time >_<

darthv725225d ago

anyone can use this right? You dont have to be a plus member? It would be cool to be able to use it for game saves as i am not a plus member.

BubloZX5225d ago

I havent turned my ps3 on in weeks but thats because my ps3 and 360 are back home. Thank god I got a ps vita and my gaming laptop

shoddy5225d ago

It nice to have my game save data everywhere.

bozebo5225d ago Show
darthv725225d ago

thanks for that. I was looking around on the web for any info about using dropbox for game saves. I guess for now you cant. The cloud storage option for game saves is still plus members only.

Makes sense as if people used dropbox for saves then it would be one less selling point for plus.

DigitalxPiracy5225d ago

I sold my entire PS3 collection. It's now a Blu-Ray player lol.

moparful995225d ago

I don't know if this was a unique instance or if anyone else had experienced this, but I DL'ed a game from the store last night and I kid you not from start to finish it took maybe 90secs ... I don't know if it had anything to do with the size and compression of the game or if the new update significantly increased download and install times? Anyone else experience this??

And if you're participating in the new Dropbox beta, you can get an additional 5 GB free. It's a little bit of work to get there, but I'm up to 8.5 GB of Dropbox space completely free of charge.

MagicAccent5225d ago

How do you enter the beta? :D

aftrdark215225d ago

I downloaded the beta from here. http://www.techspot.com/new...
Thanks for the info about the beta.

Armyless5225d ago

For the desperate, you can copy photos to a USB flash drive and use the Windows autoplay importer on it.

For the truly desperate, you can just use a handful of photos -- or even wallpapers -- batch resize them, crop, rotate, rename etc.. using something like Irfanview.

A couple dozen 1080p wallpapers resized to 200MB-300MB each ought to be considerably effective. :-)

Majin-vegeta5226d ago (Edited 5226d ago )

I also noticed they added so you can take game screen shots when your in a game go to the photosection and there should be something that allows you to do it...i just checked and it's not there anymore hmm wierd.

ftwrthtx5225d ago

That's been there for a while but it's only for a few games. The developer has to add that in.

NeoBasch5226d ago

I'll be using this feature a lot. They should put it on the XMB.

Blaze9295225d ago

"If there’s one thing that many, many PS3 owners have been longing for, it was Dropbox support on their consoles."

huh? This is the first time I'm ever hearing about anyone 'longing' for dropbox support on the ps3 or any console. Maybe I'm missing the big deal but I don't exactly see how this is a killer app or an "amazing new feature."

I'll still use external HDDs. A nice novelty feature surely but far from amazing and longed for. imo at least

taylork375225d ago

I definitely haven't seen it being "longed" for, but it is definitely an awesome new feature.

Previous to this I was using a flash drive and now instead of having to put the file on that flash drive and plug it into the PS3, all I have to do is drop the file onto a drop box folder and I can access it anytime on the PS3.

MagicAccent5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

What?
No more fumbling around for an usb stick.
You can drop music, movies and photos and just download them on the PS3 whenever. That's bloody convenient if you ask me.

PetitPiPi5225d ago

Love Dropbox! I use it daily for work.

The only problem I see is with big files like videos. You need to upload them to Dropbox only to download them. I use Tversity and stream everything from my PC. Way easier imo.

Very cool nonetheless.

Silly gameAr5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

This is the first time I've ever heard of Dropbox, let alone wanting it for PS3, but I'm definitely going to check it out. Sounds like it might be handy.

wolokowoh5225d ago

@PetitPiPi One advantage if you get in the beta, which gives you 8.5 gb, would be moving files over than are larger than 4gb like digital copies of movies over to your PS3 for storage on PS3. My PC only has 34 gb of storage left so whenever I get a digital copy of something now I can just transfer it over to the PS3 using it as an external HDD since I have 500gb HDD in it. With it on PS3 that frees up memory on my PC and allows me to watch it on my TV as well.

Christopher5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

What would be awesome is if we could use Dropbox to upload and download saves.

@Silly gameAr: If you're big into portable document management for smartphones and tablets, dropbox is one of the best things since sliced bread. No matter where I am or what device I have with me, I can download any important documents I may need as long as I have service.

Silly gameAr5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

Ah, okay. Not really into all of that, but I can see how it would be a good tool for those that are.

duplissi5224d ago

you should check out box as well, a while back i got in on a promotion for 50gb for free. they have ios, android, wp7, webos, and bbos apps.

gigreen5225d ago

Whatever...

It's way more convinient to just put files on a USB stick and load in onto the PS3. And much faster too.

Christopher5225d ago

Depends. If I can upload a media file from anywhere, share it with tons of friends, and download it to my PS3, that could be a big help to many people and easier than copying a file one or more times to one or more USB drives.

Gazondaily5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

Dropbox actually helped me out a lot this Monday where we had a powercut at the office and no one could carry on working apart from me, because I save all my stuff on dropbox. I just carried on working on my phone.

I don't think dropbox has been a much requested feature on the PS3 at all but its handy to have.

ftwrthtx5226d ago

This new browser is really looking better and better.

WitWolfy5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

I dunno to me the browser still seems the same... Takes ages to load ANYTHING! And im using a 4MB ADSL as well...

ftwrthtx5224d ago

I have 15/15 MBPS FiO so maybe that's the difference.

WitWolfy5220d ago

Doubt it, if my PC's browser is fast cant see why the PS3 browser should be any different.

Dont tell me the PS3 browswer needs more then 450KB/s just to load a simple web page.

kc_chang5226d ago

Smooth browsing. Now the only thing left is, what to download.

MagicAccent5225d ago (Edited 5225d ago )

yew...

I hope by Goat Porn you mean the original Conan the Barbarian, in which there is a scene to which such actions are alluded.

ps3themes.com has awesome themes :)

NukaCola5226d ago

@sizzon

been using them for years now. It's a great site. They are now moving into animated themes that are really cool. I have an 8bit seen from SotC and it looks pretty sick.

Also recommend:

StageVU which allows for a youtube like movie/TV streaming and you can download the stuff to the XMB under Video.

Project Free TV which works great already but now better.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8533d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele33d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk32d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay32d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 32d ago
Athlon10133d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit32d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg32d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10132d ago (Edited 32d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14933d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle46d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit46d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog46d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog46d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad46d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_46d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage46d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda46d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
