Nightmare Mode's Tom Auxier continues his running series on video game introductions by focusing on one of the greatest side-scrolling titles of all time, Super Metroid. Excerpted:
"Super Metroid’s introduction features three components: a creepy crawl through a deserted space station, a fight with a boss you thought to be dead (the immortal Ridley), and a surprisingly tense escape sequence. In about five minutes the game has told you everything you need to know about its plot: there’s a Metroid, it’s lost, and you need to go find it. And Ridley’s going to try to stop you."

Super Metroid was a monumental triumph of interactive art, a game that achieved new heights in presentation, level design, and pacing, and despite a few flaws, manages to hold up astoundingly well to this day.

"30 years after its launch, however, Super Metroid for the SNES remains the undisputed king of the franchise in terms of its atmosphere and tone. " - Ollie Reynolds | NintendoLife
Fusion did a great job at it. Really love that horror feel with metroid. I mean you are completely alone on alien planets filled with horrific monsters and toxic environments.
