Is Apple Making a PlayStation 4 Killer?

Apple wants to beat Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo at their own game.

According to MCV (via The Next Web) the iPhone maker has hired a man who spent seven years leading the marketing efforts for Xbox Live: Robin Burrowes.

This is not the first game-related appointment made by Apple . The company previously hired Nick Grange, a PR exec from Activision and Electronic Arts. But Burrowes might be the most significant hire yet.

Hahah no room for new competition.Apple stick to making shoddy fones and let sony and ms do their thing.

realiks5223d ago

If apple joins the console competition I would consider to quit gaming.
Just kidding ;)

morkendo235223d ago

I'd rather have DREAMCAST 2 than a APPLE with worms

sikbeta5222d ago

@leogets

Dude, the hordes of Apple Zealots would buy I-POS-Expensive-Console-wannab e in a f**** heartbeat, you know, kind of scary to even think, I don't want to live in a world in which Apple is in the gaming industry, changing all that s*** that's common in gaming, to end up playing crap and pay In-App purchases for unlockables and all that s***, I'd consider quit gaming asap

The heck with article? it's not like PlayStation is alone in the gaming market, why no mention of Nintendo and MS?

Dee_915222d ago

tbh id probably buy it :)
But I dont know about PS4 killer.... thats just a flamebait title

nveenio5222d ago

I'm on the fence about Apple. My iPhone is one of the best investments I've ever made (jailbroken, of course). But my MacBook is literally the crappiest thing I've ever purchased in my entire life. And that includes any magic kits or joke books.

So, they could be hit or miss, I think. As for me, I think I'll stick with Sony. My PS3 is the most useful electronic item I've ever purchased. (Besides a PC, anyway.)

Soldierone5222d ago

Apple entering the market will more than likely destroy the entire industry.

Imagine a new console every 6 months with a MASSIVE focus on crap games (not even good enough to be called Casual) that make Nintendo casual titles for kids look good? Then they would most likely pull the same crap MS does with buying out "exclusive" stuff and we won't know what is going where and how....

Apple stay out of it. If you TRULY want to join in, make a game studio first.

And why single out the PS4? This is an ex-MS guy. It's Microsoft that he'd be the biggest threat to.

Apple is all about appealing to the lowest common denominator. That won't fly with the hardcore gaming crowd.

They also have a history of charging ridiculous amounts of money for stupid adapters to fit with their intentionally proprietary interfaces. Same with accessories. They'll release a barebones base system and screw you on the part you need. Get ready for a $150 "iNet Adapter", and a $200 "iDrive", etc etc etc.

Why o why5222d ago

Frosty, that kinda sounds like........ no matter;)

Why o why5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

kmt dp

Im trying to imagine how apple would do it. The west has a champion already and the prospect of another western console maker to champion would be interesting. Let the fud begin

Ace_Man_65223d ago

Why you try and rant Apple, at least spell correctly. :)

gigreen5223d ago

Leogets, you have to be really stupid to think that Apple didn't revolutionize the cellphone market.

If they do make a console, it can only be healthy for the industry.

Ult iMate5222d ago

A $1000+ console with $2 games, based on microtransactions is no way wealthy.
Also a platformholder, that doesn't produce any games or doesn't make a quality assurance before releasing a game into its online store is not healthy.

shoddy5222d ago

Why you want touch only control?

frostypants5222d ago (Edited 5222d ago )

gigreen, they revolutionized MARKETING of smart phones. Very few of their phone features weren't ripped off of others. Even Siri is an inferior rip-off of Android apps that have been around for a while.

monfa5222d ago

Not sure how putting a phone inside a pda is revolutionizing anything.
But it doesn't matter what they make , they could make a turd look white and shiney and drones will stand in line for 48 hours to get one.

Dee_915222d ago

Good marketing strategy /= revolutionary

@ hiredhelp
If NOVA, Shadowgun or Modern Combat are such cool games that can compete on the game market, why don't they release them for home consoles for 60 bucks for a copy then? Would you buy a Modern Combat instead of Call of Duty or Modern Warfare?

bebojet5222d ago

Here's their console exclusives.

Angry Birds: Halo Edition

Call of Birds: Black Feather

How does apple plan to kill the Playstation 4....

When Sony fully said they are in no rush to make a new console?

What.... are they just going to wait until the PS4 is announced and go SURPRISE! WE MAKE GAME CONSOLE! GONNA KICK UR ASS!?

Anyways.... this is probably going to skyrocket on N4G today

scotchmouth5222d ago

Good response. You can't have a ps4 killer when there is no ps4 so to speak. Its like asking if apple is going to make the next Wii3 killer.

Sp3Ci4LK4Y5222d ago

There is room for at least one more competitor and im intrigued as to how Apple bring their interesting ideas against the top dogs next Gen (if they do). Im no fan boy so whoever brings the best features and games to the table wins my money.

Getowned5222d ago (Edited 5222d ago )

No there is always room for competition, but apple hmm hard to say it's really a just wait and see kind of thing.I don't think they would pull as much muscle as sony or ms even nintendo but hey thats what people thought about the original xbox too.I would rather see a steam console :P Edit(well actually there is one more of less,it's called a PC)

Yay next gen 3d angry birds!!!! Woooooooo! Lol

In all seriousness though I think this is a good possibility.
Sony are at their lowest eb ( at least in terms of sales, popularity, position against opposition ) since they launched ps1 and now would be as good a time as any to strike for apple!

DigitalAnalog5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

Ergo, no exclusives. Unless they can secure a 3rd party developer to do that. But this is where it gets different the from the phone market. You want to compete with the big-boys, then that would be the "core" market. Something that Apple doesn't seem to grasp with it's iOs game offerings.

Besides, why buy this console if the games are going to be available in the other 3 systems?

Urrakia345222d ago

The Wii's sales numbers make me think otherwise, unfortunately. =/

brettyd5222d ago

Gotta start somewhere, Apple has the funds to make this gamble. A lot of studios would jump at the chance to sign a exclusive deal with Apple. As much as gamers hate to admit it Apple is EXTREMELY successful in everything they do so I cant see them jumping into gaming being any different.

Yea, their products are expensive but you get what you pay for. All my Apple products work just as good as the day i bought them. Can't say the same for other electronics I own.

Bring on the disagrees.

Iveyboi5222d ago

Every ipod I have ever owned broke....I cut my ties with Apple since

arnyftw5222d ago

idk what you're talking about, why do you need exclusives when you have the app store. I cant wait to play angry birds and tap tap on my apple console! /s

Emilio_Estevez5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

Sony + Apple = Profit?
Think about it.
Sony 1st party studios, Apples apps/small games
Hardware mix - Sony Controllers at least
Apple junkies and PS fans.
How could it not work really?

Mikhail5223d ago

Remember the rumor about Apple buying Sony?...if that happens..the next playstation will be more expensive but with OSX built in...and it will come in two colors...will i buy it? dunno..

Emilio_Estevez5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

1 buying the other would be questionable, but them working together would be gaming gold, platinum even.

steve30x5223d ago

If it was made by apple I guarantee I wont buy. I am completely anti apple. Their hardware is overpriced and over engineered.

one2thr5223d ago (Edited 5223d ago )

You do know that Sony doesnt only make game consoles, right?...
...Only things I can see Sony doing with Apple is:
1-Borrowing the Retina Display tech for the Controllers, or even on the system...
2-Apple creating a custom iTunes Apple for PS4, so that it can connect to the "i-whatevers"...

Strange_Evil5222d ago

If there was a collaboration between the 2, I'd like Apple to but all of it's 'i' services on the PS4 and let them do the marketing. Hate Apple all you want but the guys just sold 37 million iPhone 4S's in 1 quarter... With Sony 1st party and Apple's marketing genius, they are bound to be unbeatable.

Soldierone5221d ago

As a fan of Sony products, if they "teamed" up with Apple I will jump ship in a heart beat. No ifs ands or buts about it.

"Yeah here is IStation. We didn't bother innovating that much and it barely competes with the competition, unlike the PlayStation always has, but it has an "exclusive" OS and a very high price for no apparent reason. Enjoy."

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn225d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn224d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown25d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay24d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac24d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger25d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde25d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde24d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
