Making Square Enix relevant again

Back in the 1990s, Square was one of the premiere game developers out there. What can they do to reclaim that crown?

HD remake of Final Fantasy 7?

Sadie21005250d ago

Haha, I almost said the same thing. That would instantly put them on top, even if it's no longer a great game by today's standards. I think they'd sell two copies to every living person on this planet.

MaxXAttaxX5249d ago

What's the point of making a PS1 game in HD?
They should remake the game altogether.

Or remake better FF games at least.
It'd be cool if the made IV or VI into fully rendered 3D.
Heck, a remake of IX would be amazing as well.

iamtehpwn5249d ago

Final Fantasy XV doing what Final Fantasy 9 did, and returning the franchise back to its roots. They should innovate along side doing that however, and do things that Final Fantasy does best...which is making worlds and new things people have never seen before, but I want them to do that in a way that stays true to Final Fantasy.

.....and you know. Add an Overworld map.

Infernostew5249d ago

Totally agree. I would like to see SE hire some writers to give us an unforgettable story instead of the same "blah blah blah, save the world bull crap".

DA_SHREDDER5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

Do things noone has ever seen before huh? Obvious noob is obvious. FF hasn't ever done anything new. If anything, the "new" stuff is what's killing the franchise. The new battle system is the biggest perpetrator. Even if the story sucks they could have at least made the combat better, not worse. The series is dead, and the only way they could ever revitalize the series is if they go back and start off where the real FF ended. And that was when Tidus got killed. FFX-2 was the beginning of the end for Squeenix. And as an avid fan and as much as it pains me to say this. I doubt the series will ever be as good than even the NES versions.

BTW, they could learn a thing or two if the devs actually cared about about the series like the true fans of the series do. It would do them some good if they went back and actually played the old versions of the series, they could get an idea what a real FF actually is.

iamtehpwn5249d ago

"Obvious noob is obvious. FF hasn't ever done anything new. If anything, the "new" stuff is what's killing the franchise. "

Really? So. None of the new stuff? Final Fantasy has ALWAYS been about new stuff:

- Active Timer Battle (Final Fantasy 4)
- Job system (Final Fantasy III)
- Summons (Final Fantasy III)
- Material System (Final Fantasy VII)
- Drawing Magic (Final fantasy 8)
- Junction System (Final Fantasy 8)
- Sphere Grid (Final Fantasy X)
- Controllable Summons (Final Fantasy X)
- Conditional Turn Based (Final Fantasy X)

These are off the top of my head, that were all new to Final Fantasy at some point. The stuff that's been coming out lately has been hit and miss, but if you say Final Fantasy isn't about "new", I doubt if you've ever even played a Final Fantasy.

KeybladeMaster5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

Okay here's what they really need to do:

1) They need to manage the teams at the Square offices better. Edios studios are fine and have their management of games (and when they release) on track. That part of Square Enix is doing great.

2) On number one's note, put on the fast track any games announced and focus on those (Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Type-0 Localization, Final Fantasy X HD, Kingdom Hearts BBS Vol. 2 and 3D). Get other teams to start preproduction on games that people want with the smaller teams and studios within Square and then give them to the bigger teams when they are done with their other projects (Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III and a new HD console Dragon Quest). And above all don't announce anything that is more than a year and a half out.

3) Hire a new CEO that knows how to calm the concerns of the fanbase instead of pissing off every fan.

Those 3 steps alone can bring Square Enix back into the hearts and minds of gamers. It's very simple. Make it happen Square!!!!

Slade5250d ago

this is one of the most retarded articles Ive ever read.

1) they were number 8 in total game company revenue last year

2) They release more quality titles than any company this side of nintendo

Outside_ofthe_Box5250d ago (Edited 5250d ago )

Come defend Square Enix when they actually release games that people actually asked for (Yeah, 13-2 was NOT asked for by anyone...) such as FFvs13, KH3, FF7 remake.

Slade5249d ago

people wanted a new dq monsters, we got that, a new ff side game thats old school we got that, we also got star ocean 1 in the US for the first time, we also got front mission 1 for the first time.

Dont give me the bull that square has done nothing for the fans.

Godmars2905249d ago

Pretty sure any profits they made were lost fixing FFXVI.

Outside_ofthe_Box5249d ago (Edited 5249d ago )

"Dont give me the bull that square has done nothing for the fans."

I fail to see any of the games I mentioned that people want in your response...

And did you not read the article that you claimed is retarded?

~*"As a developer, Squaresoft's heyday was in the 1990s, way before it merged with Enix (to become Square Enix). Back then, the company seemed more eager to experiment. Instead of an endless parade of remakes and overpriced smartphone ports, Square Enix bounced all over the RPG spectrum: It succeeded in creating compelling action-adventure RPGs (the Mana series, which was at its strongest on the SNES); turn-based strategy RPGs (Final Fantasy Tactics and the Japanese-only Bahamut Lagoon); and, of course, some of its best traditional RPG offerings of all time (Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6)."*~

~*"Each of these games felt rare and special because once the experience was over, pondering the story was more interesting than clamoring for a sequel. Final Fantasy 6-2 would be unthinkable. Maybe some fans would appreciate it, but it would also would water down a story that featured plenty of closure."*~

~*"In other words, Square Enix can do two things in an effort to recapture its former glory: It can go on doing what it's doing -- releasing more remakes and rehashes -- or it can remember why its name commanded so much respect in the ’90s. Ideally, the company will work on games that utilize the best historical aspects of its storytelling capabilities, its character designs, and its gameplay. Remakes are great for a quick nostalgia fix, but a company with the size and reputation (and bottom line) of Square Enix can’t subsist on them forever."*~

Care to counter those points Slade?

Square Enix can do no wrong. I bet that is what you'd love the article to be about huh?

Let's face it square is shooting themselves in the foot not releasing the 3 games I mentioned. Those games will sell millions when and if they are released. Oh and lets not forget the fail that is FF13 and FF14 that SE has released. 13-2 looks more or less like it's following in those footsteps.

But yeah like you are implying Square Enix is doing fine/s

Dacapn5249d ago

Stop making games that play themselves *cough...autobattle*

Minato-Namikaze5249d ago

Get rid of wada and for the love of god stop tryna "westernize" games

kewlkat0075249d ago

How about break off the Enix Marriage and go back to being Squaresoft....

Bring back Hironobu Sakaguchi....and I agree with the westernizing of JRPGs

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy75d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor75d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher75d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

75d ago
thesoftware73075d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

75d ago
KyRo75d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7274d ago (Edited 74d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

75d ago
1Victor75d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

You will say anything when you are in denial that your hardware is dead and nobody wants your platform. Good luck with Helix because nobody will buy it.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher75d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake75d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.

Basically, their presentation says: Go Woke, Go broke.
Sorry fellow N4gamers.

Alos88180d ago

Or, alternatively, don't cut Switch and Steam out of your biggest releases day one.

360ICE180d ago

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.

gold_drake180d ago

i mean .. we've been saying this for years.

franwex180d ago

Oh darn. Maybe games with NFTs can fixed that!

Soy180d ago

Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!
