Why Doom 4 Won’t Flop Like Rage

Since Rage came out in October, people that are fans of Doom 3 or the Doom series have been skeptical about Doom 4. Rage was showed off at E3 and it looked beyond amazing! Awesome guns, awesome graphics, awesome gameplay, just one hell of a game that people couldn’t wait for…then only hours after the midnight release, people were raging at Rage. The game just had so many bugs, and just problems in general. Many copies were taken back, some were probably broken, and some just said “Forget it, I’ll play it till the end”. Then some people thought about “Wait these are the same guys that made Doom 3!” (Panic attack!)

Simple reason: It's DOOM.
The claim that Rage was a flop is subjective to individual interpretation, to some, Rage was the perfect balance of shooter and role-playing mechanics. Many people went into the experience of Rage with incorrect expectations as to the games scope, making incorrect presumptions as to its identity, expecting a similar experience to Fallout 3 and other epic scale video games.

Also, in regards to the articles claims that Rage was a flop due to large amounts of bugs, they need to understand that iD Tech 5 in a new engine, this isn't the same as Call of Duty titles, utilising an ageing engine releasing with a catalogue of bugs, this is a highly polished video game running at 60 FPS utilising a never before used engine, bugs should be expected.

"Many people went into the experience of Rage with incorrect expectations as to the games scope, making incorrect presumptions as to its identity, expecting a similar experience to Fallout 3 and other epic scale video games."

Then the game has failed to connect to consumers. I see no one but the developers to blame. Even if the consuemer had the incorrect "expectations", the game should be able to correct that assumptions. This is why HANDS-ON experience are always the determining cause.

By that logic, The Last of Us is already going to fail because a lot of ignorant people are already establishing it as a generic "zombie apocalypse" game even though there are evidences that point the other direction and even DIRECTLY from the devs themselves.

I only see nobody but ID to blame for getting lackluster expectations. It's not a bad game according to reviews but it's not a revelatory experience it was "hyped" up to be.

I think DigitalAnalog has a point here.

The game was laced with in-identity from the start, and the abundant ambiguity of the game's driving mechanics left many people skeptical to consider it as a shooter, or an RPG on the levels of Fallout 3 and the like, with a consistency of weapons. It didn't fail because of bugs, it just failed because of a severe inability to define exactly WTF it was. From the teasers, to the previews, to even the reviews, people couldn't discern the Action/RPG/Shooter/Racing game into a definitive genre--being a blur of the mix, it was generally a lack of identity that left us clueless.

No doubt about the Talent @ ID, Carmack and Co. But it seems lately they are loosing their charm.. There is that X-Factor that was missing in ID since the release of Doom 3!

Anyway, Im sure our Doubts will be cleared in Doom 4! And im sure Carmack & Co. are working their Asses.. on ID Tech 5 Engine.. to avoid the same fate as RAGE.

Btw, RAGE was a pretty decent title with some of Industry best visuals... Its just the bugs were one of the major Turn off Factor, But overall They have done a good job.

Simply because he has learned the lesson that no one can succeed by neglecting his roots :D ie PCs in the case of John Carmack !!!

Rage wasn't. Flop. ...Doom4 will use the same engine that made Rag an awesome game.

Perjoss5236d ago

Rage along with id tech5 got a lot of hate around here, but I loved both the game and the engine.

I thought Rage was great. The gameplay was really fun but the characters had very little depth

Steadyhndz5236d ago

I personally never played Rage...but from what I read it was very buggy.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
