2012: Bright Year For Microsoft?

GR's Bryan Allbright writes:

Let's be straightforward here, Microsoft will announce something big this year. It has gotten to the point where the Xbox 360 just cannot handle the next two years without upgrading the hardware and software behind their moneymaker. Sony has the PSVita out this year with the possibility of a PS4 announcement (although they said no) and Nintendo, as per last year's E3...

lol no it wont be

2011 was a terrible year

lelo2play5288d ago

Maybe for players that wanted more exclusives, it probably wasn't a great year... but for Microsoft, sales wise, it was a great year for them.

IWentBrokeForGaming5288d ago

Well I was one of those players that wanted more Exclusives!

and I STILL want and expect more exclusives but for the longest time now I've come to realise that's asking too much from MS!

kaveti66165288d ago

Your username is "IWentBrokeForGaming" ; yet you're complaining that you don't have enough games to play on 360?

Why are PS3 owners so concerned about the lack of 360 exclusives. You would think, considering how much you boast about PS3 exclusives, that you wouldn't have enough time to play them all, and wouldn't really be interested in what 360 is or isn't doing. Another kernel of evidence that people on this site don't actually care about the games, they care about the companies, they care about the machines they paid for.

I remember someone made a list of exclusives for 360 for 2011, and yes, it was a small list. Forza 4 was included. A PS3 fanboy decided to comment on this list, saying, "Lol, Forza 4 doesn't count. It doesn't even sell, they have to bundle it." And this user got like 20 agrees and 4 disagrees.

You guys don't really care if 360 has games to play or not. Fanatics don't care. They're just here to spew crap.

dark-hollow5288d ago

bring on the next gen already.

Rageanitus5288d ago

the only good game that was exclusive on xbox was Gears 3. Other than that the rest can be found on the PC or PS3.

EVILDEAD3605288d ago (Edited 5288d ago )

The 360 is coming off it's best selling year ever..2012 will be a really strong year as well, but it will depend on what Nintendo has up it's sleeve post E3 whether they can top 2011.

Already it looks like it's most balanced year ever.

The marquee game is obviously Halo 4 which is going to again be a MONSTER title and the top selling exclusive for 2012.

What will be interesting will be the console debuts of both Minecraft and Witcher 2.

Early on Micrsoft is beefinup XBLA in a huge way. With the new Alan Wake leading a new back-to-back four week release of games that includes the long lost 'I am Alive'.

XBLA will obviousy contine it's legacy throughout the year, espeially for the summer of arcade 2012.

Kinect may end up stealing the show as finally we get to see hardcore implementation of it's feature.

Mass Effect 3 leads the Kinect implementation on March 6th., but follows with Ghost Recon and later Rainbow Six.

But, the most interesting will be to see how Kinect is used in EAs major 2012 sports line up: Fifa, Madden, Tiger, etc.

kinect will also get a full line-up of exclusives that incluse Fable: The Journey, Steel Battalion, Project Draco, and hopefully a better version of the pushed back Star Wars Kinect.

But most of the big news surrounding this year are the relases of what may be known as the best year ever of 3rd party multi-platform games.

We are talking a year where we see new games from the franchises:

Mass Effect
Grand Theft Auto
Final Fantasy
Metal Gear Rising
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil
Rainbow Six
Ghost Recon
Borderlands

And so much more it's not even funny how packed this year will be.

The media apps will still keep coming..Personally I can't wait for HBO GO to finally release later this year.

E3 will obviously be huge for the 360, but if Wii-U is anything less than stellar then the 360 will be in a really great position to have another record breaking holiday.

Definately looking forward to see how it all plays out.

Do you work as a marketer for Microsoft?

Just wondering cause sometimes it's hard to tell.

it will if they release the nextbox in 10 months....it will be an epic year...

if they do not release a next gen console this year....it will be another year of games i can play with better controls, better graphics and better performance on pc.

same with sony, the last gen ps3/360 are ancient.

CarlitoBrigante5288d ago

Multiplatforms dont even look that better on pc. Sure BF3 looks so much better, but so what? I can play it on my PS3 too and have all PS3 exclusives.

kaveti66165288d ago

The PC version has much larger maps and higher player counts per match.

trenso15288d ago

I don't think that Xbox portable will be coming out anytime soon if ever. They barely have any exclusives for the core players on their home console as is. What could they do to support a portable one.

Lyr1c5288d ago

Bright?

More like DeadLight -smirk-

In all honesty, it seems just 'meh' for now. We'll see once E3 hits. They may come with a few surprises.

rowdyBOY5288d ago

no exclusives besides halo 4 ?
and microsoft has gone all casual .
i hate the dashboard .

real hardcore gamers bought the xbox 360 , now they are brushed aside , who is gonna buy the succesor ?

the casuals dont like microsoft or sony for that matter .

casuals like Apple and Nintendo .

the xbox name doesnt sound casual at all, it sounds hardcore .

microsoft is confused , and doesnt know what they want anymore .

OcularVision5288d ago

Is that what you really think? Microsoft is clearly prepping for next-gen. If history is correct, they're going to end the generation with one of their key franchises (Halo 4). Just like how the PS2 ended (sort of) with GoW2 and the GameCube with Twilight Princess.

Biggest5288d ago

If you follow the history of Sony and Nintendo you would be correct. . . About Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft's only history is dropping the Xbox immediately.

DiRtY5288d ago

Halo 4, Alan Wake, Fable, Steel Battalion, The Witcher 2, Star Wars Kinect. So there is more than just Halo.

Plus we don't know anything about Rare, Lionhead's second project or Twisted Pixel new game.

Add GTA V, Max Payne 3, Resident Evil 6, CoD, Mass Effect 3, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, BioShock Infinite, SoulCalibur, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Metal Gear Rising and you have a pretty damn good lineup with 16 games for 12 months and we are just in January.

Rageanitus5288d ago

real hardcore gamers..... lol

you have to remember consoles are geared to casual gamers. Just look at the arguments that console gamers bring up "it costs too much to play on PC"

Just look at all the popular FPS/shooters out there.. the developers and game designers simplified the mechanics of all these games.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio76d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing76d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9276d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit76d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing76d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9276d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn279d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn278d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown79d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay78d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay78d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac78d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger79d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300079d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde79d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde78d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_78d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
