How Square Enix could pull off the Final Fantasy VII remake

There is little doubt that Final Fantasy VII is one of the most (if not the most) requested remakes of all time. But the endeavor poses a dilemma : how to please both the fan and the newcomer. By taking a clue from Pokémon and Nier, Square Enix could pull this off.

Colwyn5243d ago

just make ff7 remake for ps4

EliteDave935243d ago

Why the PS4? bring it on now!

jeseth5243d ago

Make it a PS4 launch title and watch the world set on fire!!!

d0nni35243d ago

@jeseth an announcement like that could take the internet down faster than SOPA

MaxXAttaxX5243d ago

There are better FF games that deserve a remake more so than 7. Games that haven't even seen the light of 3D rendered characters/environments yet.

Now THAT would be something special.

xflo3605243d ago

Instead of a remake I think they should HD it a la Ico / shadow!

I certainly hope they don't squenix the crap out of it!

MaxXAttaxX5243d ago

FFVII is a PS1 game, not a PS2 game. The game in HD would look like... well, giant pixels.
Yay HD blocks!

Hyperbomb695243d ago

agreed with making it a PS4 game, that would be great! It would be like the Metal Gear Solid 4 of next gen!

Vynzent5242d ago

Yep. I personally think 1 of the many reasons they don't work on it now is because the PS3 can't do it justice, it's actually a very weak machine.

When the PS4 is out, I will DEMAND the remake! :D

TopDudeMan5243d ago

This is something people will never really let go, isn't it? I want a remake as much as the next guy, but please, just get over it already. They aren't doing it.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5243d ago (Edited 5243d ago )

Prolly not. But it doesn't help that Square loves to tease people about it. Back in 2010 they asked their twitter followers if they should remake the game. Needless to say all hell broke loose and they had to ask people to stop responding.

I actually think there is a small possibility. The demand is high. People who never played the first are interested to see just what the fuss is all about (me included). Turning down that kind of money would be a big mistake (which now that I think about it seems to be Square's theme this gen)

I was gonna buy it off psn but I have too many other games to get. Plus Vita's coming out soon. I'm sure i'll play it eventually.

TopDudeMan5243d ago

If you wanna see what all the fuss is about, go back and play the original. You can get it off the playstation store. I do think there's demand for it, but they've told us x amount of times that they aren't doing it.

Reborn5243d ago

They wouldn't have needed to tell people to stop responding, if there was no 'demand'. There's clearly a demand for it.

The question is; will they ever do it?

No FanS Land5243d ago

the actual game and mechanic is good but quite frankly most of his success is based on the fact that it was the first polygon "3D" FF

OdinX5243d ago

Square has never outright just said "No, we're never doing a FF7 remake"; their answers have been dodgy at best, and when they have said no, it's usually followed by a "not at this moment" or "we have no plans to..." or "the team is busy with x". Personally, I believe it WILL come one day, but their priorities are so mixed up right now it's ridiculous. There's definitely a demand for it, there just has to be a lull in their "projects" for the possibility of this happening to come.

TopDudeMan5243d ago

I dunno, this seems like a pretty outright answer to me http://www.computerandvideo...

OdinX5243d ago

@TopDudeMan No, I don't think that's a sold answer; it's an excuse from Kitase who although was the game's director at the time wasn't the actual producer nor designer. The excuse here is that if they make a remake they would have to remake everything about the game which isn't the case. It also implies that development time for such a game would take an upwards of 20+ years which is absolute BS. However, any fan of FF7 who wants a remake can wait, be it 5 yrs or 10. I don't know why they keep pushing it away if the prospects of making a ton of money is there, cuz let's be honest, flop or not, the game will sell like hotcakes.

GupX19A5243d ago

Doing a remake is just feeding the millions of trolls that exist who will want to tear down the FFVII legacy. No remake plz.

zeal0us5243d ago (Edited 5243d ago )

For what? There would a cold day in Hades before Sony&SE let MS/Xbox get their hands on FF7.

Your cellphone(through an emulator) would get FF7 way way way way way way way before your 360 would get a glimpse of it(excluding the ff7 movie).

Vynzent5242d ago

LMFAO, too bad it will not play it, too weak a machine...

smashman985243d ago

I think the idea of making 2 versions sucks

the reason it works with pokemon is that they have different pokemon and each one having their own legendary forcing you to trade with friends to collect them all

and with nier... well as you can see it didnt work out

now they could make one game with 2 different play options inside otherwise your looking at some severe fan backlash

Guwapo775243d ago

I agree. The article was talking about making changes to the original while keeping the same story line. That would be the ultimate fail. FFVII was the perfect story and game play turn based game I can remember. No other RPG had a lasting memory like FFVII. Leave the game as is with updated graphics. That is the ONLY problem with the game.

vuzuki5242d ago

Nier was a sales success compared to its ridiculously low budget. The director was very pleased with the sales - your comment is uninformed.

smashman985242d ago

Its great the director was pleased and its great that the sales exceeded the budget but i wasnt denying any of that

I was talking about how the team behind it got laid off.

so im not misinformed
you misunderstood

vuzuki5242d ago

Well if the game was a sales success compared to what they expected from the beginning you can figure out that the dissolution of the team afterwise has little to do with its performance. In more than 10 years I'm pretty much sure Nier is Cavia's most succesful title. So concluding that because of Nier the team was laid off and saying "it didnt work out" as if Nier was responsible for the dissolution of the team is misleading.

smashman985241d ago

no not misleading at all i guarantee you if nier would've broken a million sales not only would we have at the very least heard about a successor by now but the team would also still be working at square.

and speaking of expected sales wheres the data to back up your point its easy to say they met expectations but its hard to believe thats the truth when i don't see anything backing it up

all i said was it didn't work out and then further clarified that the team had been laid off, was what i meant

with all that being said even if nier wasn't the only reason for them being shutdown at the very least it can be assumed that it was their final chance to prove to square that they were a valuable asset

and in that respect they failed

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy65d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor66d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher66d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

thesoftware73066d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

66d ago
KyRo65d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7265d ago (Edited 65d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

66d ago
1Victor65d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

You will say anything when you are in denial that your hardware is dead and nobody wants your platform. Good luck with Helix because nobody will buy it.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher66d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake66d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.

i mean, well deserved, its one of the best.

VenomUK96d ago

I’d love to know how many units have been sold of all the Final Fantasy VII franchise games, including the original, the remakes, spin offs such as Crisis Core, and mobile games Ever Crisis. I bet a fair few copies.
