Wii U: Release Date, Tech Specs, Launch Games & Hardware FAQ

Nowgamer: Nintendo hasn’t released much in the way of confirmed information regarding the Wii U. While it has highlighted its iPad-styled controller at last year’s E3 conference, there’s not much in the way of confirmed fact.

All this info is all subject to change with official confirmation from Nintendo but we will update this table as and when required.

Will be very disapointed if the WiiU doesn't come with at least 1 gig of RAM. Seriously, RAM is like the cheapest thing to add to the consoles. If I was in charge, I'd have at least 2 gigs of RAM, and an OS that can do multiple things like surfing the web, talking on skype via video chat, and playing games all at the same time. If you have a problem with that, why? I know this is all unconfirmed, but damn, I feel like the WiiU is gonna be awesome, but the catch is production cost. They are gonna give us 512 mb if RAM if it saves them money. Also, I'm really concerned about how good their online and party chat functions are all gonna be implemented, if at all.

@Shok. I'd be surprised if they actually did something right when it came to hardware. I'm not gonna even worry bout it. Seriously, when has Nintendo ever done anything awesome besides Mario? Zelda hasn't even been good since Majora's Mask. Metroid hasn't been relevant since the Gameboy Advanced. I did love The other M but everyone hated it so whatever. Wasn't even done by a Big N first party dev. Gaming sucks anymore for the most part. Good games are like friends, few and far between.

It depends on what kind of RAM it is. For instance;

1 gig of DDR5 RAM is > 1 gig of GDDR3 ram, which is what the current consoles use.

So really, in a sense, if the Wii U has 1 gig of GDDR5 RAM, then it really has 2 gigs of GDDR3 RAM (or more. I don't know the EXACT efficiency it has over GDDR3 RAM but you get the point.

Megaman_nerd5260d ago (Edited 5260d ago )

the advantage that faster ram has over slower ram is minimal, the amount is much more important.

Example: PS3 has 256MB of Ram running at 3.2GHZ while the Xbox has 512MB of unified Ram running at 700MHZ yet the Xbox has the advantage over memory.

If you're still not convinced then just do some research yourself.

@megaman nerd:

No PS3 has 2x 256MB of ram so whats your point? Ram running at 3.2GhZ? Lol?

Some corrections for those of you that don't understand hardware:

1. The PS3 uses half of its 2x256 memory as dedicated video RAM, so it's not quite as clean-cut as Carlito makes it.

2. The PS3's memory is XDR, it is not immediately comparable to DDR. He's correct, Carlito. Do your research. XDR memory does not use the standard memory bus.

3. The Wii U will be using more modern memory, which, I suspect, should be of a higher frequency and hopefully of triple-channel or better.

4. DDR and GDDR are not directly comparable. One is for video cards, one is for modular memory.

5. Faster RAM isn't always the best; RAM with a larger memory bandwidth (i.e., transfer rate) will make up for speeds.

@Lelldorianx

I will also add like Megaman_nerd is saying, that more RAM can also overcome faster RAM, by allowing pre-loading of the data before you need it.

A perfect of example of this is with Rage on PS3 (256MB VRAM) and Xbox 360 (up to 512MB RAM). There are far less texture pop-ups on the Xbox 360, despite the faster RAM on PS3.

PS3 even with faster RAM, needs to load the texture from hard drive first (which is roughly a magnitude slower than RAM). That means, any benefit in faster RAM is negated.

That is a perfect example of how the PS3 should have been a supercomputer, but due to it's design bottlenecks is unable to utilize a lot of it's resources efficiently. It's an unbalanced system.

I wonder if Wii U realized how the landscape changed for developers and create a developer friendly machine. The Wii was developer friendly, not because it was designed that way. It is developer friendly, because it was last generation technology....

@Jefforly:

That is a stupid restriction in windows, it has nothing to do with the HDD. Windows for some dumb reason is programmed to not allow any platter based HDD to register higher than a 5.9. Only SSD's can score higher.

Stopped reading after "All this info is all subject to change with official confirmation from Nintendo".

I hate these articles. Just wild speculation. Bit like before the Wii U was unveiled. Lots of articles saying the Wii U will have this

So sorry. We're you expecting 4.7GHz Octo-core CPU with 32MB of eDRAM and 8GB of RAM?

Lulz_Boat5258d ago

PS3 CPU run @3,2, it has 1 PPU and 8 SPU (6 usable btw)

it's like a 7 core cpu

p.s
i'm not saying that 3Ghz quad core cpu is not good. i'm just saying that this cpu is outdated if compared to OLD GEN CONSOLE, and the wii u should be a nexy gen console... you got it? o.O

Ck1x5258d ago

People need to stop believing the hype that Sony has laid out for them... no way in hell the Cell CPU is like a 7 core processor, just not happening. These spu's are limited in the functions that they can actually do outside of the core ppu. And acting as if Sony did something grand they just borrowed this layout from GPU's and how they are designed. Which the spu design works much better in assisting the main processor in graphics more than physics and calculating AI.

*Smack*

"i'm just saying that this cpu is outdated if compared to OLD GEN CONSOLE"

A Quad just means 4.
Nothing "outdated" about this. We don't know what kind of a CPU they are using.
This CPU will be custom to an extend to perform better for game-end goals.

Not sure if troll or just wrong.

@Lul_Boat

A lot of good all that tech did for the PS3 (assuming you're being honest). Being it's so difficult to develop for, games wound up being developed around the 360 first.

Likely 3.6 or so Ghz. As for Quad Core. There is no confirmation on that. Either way 4 cores = 16 threaded CPU. Since Power7 sports 4 SMT threads per core. Although that is only 2.5 times the power of PS3/X360 CPUs. If true.

If you lean towards IBM's words of Wii U using IBM Watson tech. IBM Watson uses 8 core Power7 CPUs. If true could mean Wii U will have a CPU with 32 threads. Roughly 5.x times as powerful as PS3/X360 CPUs.

Only conformation about CPU is that it will be Power7 which comes in three flavors. 4 core, 6 core, 8 core. Also with clock speed that ranges from 2.4 Ghz up to 4.25 Ghz.

I find it funny rumors of Wii U with 4 cores, rumors of Xbox 3 with 6 cores. I wonder if PS4 will be rumored to have 8 cores?

Tenkay235258d ago

The list already fails at the processor. It was confirmed by IBM the CPU is a Power7, not a PowerPC. Clock speeds are not official yet. We don't even know how much L3 cache this thing will have (eDRAM for all you other people).

Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.

Interview: Patricia Summersett on voicing Princess Zelda for nearly a decade

Believe it not, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is almost ten years old. It was a massive game for many reasons – it launched alongside Nintendo Switch, was a new take for the series by going fully open-world, and introduced various aspects like voice acting in a mainline game for the characters.
