Five ways Mass Effect 3 is better with Kinect and three it isn't

OXM UK: "Voice control and Mass Effect suit each other, but could BioWare do more?"

hennessey865238d ago

of voice control but only if it doesn't interupt gameplay, I liked it in rainbow six on the xbox "open frag and clear" ha the memories

dirigiblebill5238d ago

For my money, voice control is the only Kinect feature developers can use easily and convincingly. Shame we have mics already...

SilentNegotiator5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

It's an even bigger shame that they're going to pretend like the miniscule amount of processing required for voice commands are a major hindrance to bringing it to other platforms or allowing a person to simply use a mic. (And, as if this would be a barrier for PC gamers with modern processors)

It's an application processor used in many digital photo frames, people!

Tired5238d ago

I'm not sure.... I liked the way you could select your next question/dialogue option b4 the npc had finished talking which made the conversation smooth.

I don't think I'd enjoy waiting till they had finished b4 saying a line then listening to Shepard paraphrase it.

That to me is interrupting gameplay.

dirigiblebill5238d ago

Agreed, it's going to be interesting to see how they implement that... To be honest, I'm planning on only using Kinect in combat.

BrutallyBlunt5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

This just adds another layer of immersion. The same can be said about head-tracking in Forza 4. Neither are mandatory but each can add a greater depth of entertainment..

I don't see the need or the desire to voice out the dialogue. However organizing and voicing combat instead of going through the sub-menu is not only a time saver but keeps the gameplay going. Not sure why anyone would be against that.

Tired5238d ago

@levelhead I believe you have missed my point entirely. Had you watched the E3 kinect voice integration of mass effect?

You HAD to voice out dialogue...in such a way that would prolong the gameplay not streamline it.

If they have come up with a new way...yee bloody ha bring it on....awesome! But I fear it may be as lame as has already been shown. That is what I'm against.

BrutallyBlunt5238d ago

@hawkboi

How did I miss your point when I already stated I have no desire to repeat the dialogue on screen? Did you not read my second paragraph? That comment of mine was in fact pertaining to the E3 demo. I thought it was a gimmick and would get very tiresome to basically read out loud what was being shown on screen. It would have been far more interesting if it was like Siri on the Iphone where you could say what you want but that would take way too much time and resources for one game to allow such a thing if it is even possible.

What I am saying is Kinect can be used to do away from the sub-menus. Even something like a quick save can apparently just be voiced through Kinect. You will also be able to direct your squad through Kinect and do many attacks by voicing them through Kinect. So again that adds another layer of immersion. So why would you be against any of that when all of it is an option to begin with?

My roomates would hate me...

gigreen5238d ago

You don't even need Kinect for that. Just a headset is fine, like in Tom Clancy's End War.

VINNIEPAZ5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

"Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson says BioWare is bringing voice commands to Kinect and Xbox 360 because Microsoft’s sound and motion-sensing controller is doing the hard work of voice recognition. Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible, not just its microphones."

EDIT @ gigreen

Oh NO, you just uncovered the big secret deal MS and Bioware had going on!! Yea Bioware just flat out lied to us all. I love how gamers now a days are so jaded they are never happy and anytime a company gives us more features gamers just gotta find some negative s#it to say every single f@cking time. I hate gamers sometimes

gigreen5238d ago

I don't buy it. They could have made it work with a normal headset if they wanted to.

Seems like there was some extra cash flowing from Microsoft's direction.

SilentNegotiator5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

Oh please, Kinect's processor is the same used in digital picture frames.

I know YOU think that the ps3 would explode if it tried to do the same thing as an APPLICATION processor along with Mass Effect, but it would not. Plus, that isn't an excuse for the PC with processors that make the 360/ps3's processors LOOK like application processors.

It's clear to anyone that this has to do with a deal with Microsoft.

peeps5238d ago

Yeh considering you could give voice commands back on the ps2 with socom I don't believe they need the need kinect at all and this gen a few games have dabbled in voice commands, so what makes ME3 different?

Venjense5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

Ok VINNIEPAZ, what about PC then???

Surely PC could handle all that crazy intense processing needed for voice control....which Xbox 1 did pretty well.

Face it, MS is paying for exclusive features and depriving gamers of something they otherwise could have....again.

Watch VC come later to PC and PS3 through headsets.

PetitPiPi5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

Go PS fanboys go! lmao.

Silent. You talk too much and repeat the same thing over and over again. Mr. Copy/Paste!

ZippyZapper5238d ago

It's just stupid to think that a headset could do what Kinect does. Last time I checked headsets don't have infrared lasers tracking your lips.

Megaton5238d ago (Edited 5238d ago )

Their trailer keeps saying it really increases immersion, but I think talking to my TV would completely take me out of the game.

Dread5238d ago

I know that everyone here at n4g has to hate on kenect and ms somehow, but dude its optional just dont use it.

Megaton5238d ago

So... what? I can't comment on it? EA is shoving this Kinect functionality down everyone's throat right now through the press. They demand it's better, I disagree.

Christopher5238d ago

It's not hatred towards Kinect for everyone. I'm very much weary of voice commands. I've had the opportunity to use them in a ton of games and I have _never_ found them to be better. I was just talking a lot of nonsense when I could have spent more time listening to some music I liked or talking to someone (VoIP or in person) rather than just talking a lot.

My _only_ issue is that this is being used to sell Kinect when it is possible on every platform via a headset. Yes, I know someone is going to come here and say it's because it's on the Kinect hardware and not on the console, but I 100% believe that it is possible on all platforms, especially PC, without losing any of the noticeable performance or quality of the game itself.

And, I didn't like that some previews of it did say that they felt they were shouting at their TV rather than talking to it. This may have been due to the location and distance to the device, though.

MoreRPG5238d ago

i like the idea but i dont buy what bioware said about not being able to use voice command with a normal mic

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine530d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast530d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman530d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast529d ago
