Mass Effect 3 Kinect Hands-On | JPS

"One of the exclusive features on the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3 is the ability to use the Kinect sensor to do voice commands with all of the playable characters in the game. At first, a lot of players might think that this Kinect feature for Mass Effect 3 is all a gimmick but after giving the game a test drive during last week’s CES 2012 presentation of EA and Microsoft in Las Vegas, I am now able to say that Mass Effect 3 shines with the Kinect." - JPS

The PS3 can have this voice recognition too with headphones and eyetoy 2.
So this isnt really new. And the PS3 should have it, but they are not for some BS reason.

ShadyDevil5215d ago

I wish it was that simple. Think Bioware/EA worked something out with Microsoft because Mass Effect was born on Xbox 360.

*Accurate* voice processing is rather costly both on processing power and data set (affecting RAM). Kinect provides the processing power and MS probably provides a nice SDK for it.

As Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson from Bioware says:

"Kinect’s internal hardware is what makes it possible, not just its microphones."

Socom says hi.

Endwar says hi.

Hey You Pikachu says hi.

gamingdroid5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

... and how good where those voice recognition? I own Endwar and it's voice processing isn't nearly as good as it is on Kinect.

Also, how do you know the technical quality of the game as is didn't take a hit due to voice recognition?

As I said, the more *accurate* voice recognition is, the more processing power and larger data set is required.

It's the equivalent of calling a webcam the same as Kinect (i.e. 3D camera) or Standard Definition the same as High Definition video. Because they are similar, doesn't make them the same.

AtomicGerbil5215d ago

If a handful of titles on the PS2 could do it well enough without a hit to the gameplay I'm certain todays consoles would have no trouble at all.

SilentNegotiator5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

The Kinect uses a cheap applications processor. The same used in digital photo frames.

Facts:
*Ps2 games had no problem doing voice control without taking major hits
*PC processors would have absolutely no problem with this, no argument. But it's still exclusive to 360 with Kinect.
*Marvell PXA 168 is an applications processor used for minor tasks. The ps3 would have NO problem doing that, even if it cost the slightest performance hit to do.

gamingdroid5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

@SilentNegotiator

Getting into the nitty gritty! It's a dedicated chip for audio.

"TechInsights' teardown uncovered within Kinect a Marvell PXA 168 applications processor, a part usually found in notebook computers."

"Regardless, Microsoft has created a product that takes full advantage of all its components to provide an innovative gaming experience."

http://www.eetimes.com/elec...

Slew of information on the processor specification:

http://www.marvell.com/sele...

That is a pretty advanced chip for audio processing!

The question isn't if it is possible on other platforms, but if it is worth the effort and cost.

MS provides the hardware necessary (without need to optimize much) and the software to make it work well. After all MS has put in all the work of calibrating the microphones for different environments and tailoring it.

On other platforms, you might have to heavily optimize it, put in a lot of staff and potentially pay a licensing fee for the software.

SilentNegotiator5215d ago (Edited 5215d ago )

I've already seen that PDF, and most of those are THEORETICAL top specs for that chip.

And besides, old games STILL used voice commands without issue. And at the very least, PC could have it with little effort.

There are NO feasible excuses here.

Socom 1 and 2 were on PS2 and I don't ever recall giving an inaccurate order in those games.

I remember doing this with Socom on the PS2.

I also would never use this feature as my brother and I have a tendency to troll 1 another and I am quite certain we would spit off orders while the other was playing just to screw with 1 another. XXXD

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast507d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman507d ago
