Are Games Getting Too Easy?

As gaming becomes ever more mainstream, the desire to appeal to the core market with murderously difficult games appears to be disappearing. Dave Bouchard of Velocity Gamer takes a look at this phenomenon and laments on how it is quickly becoming the norm.

no, we're just getting too good at them.

StayStatic5251d ago

You gave me a laugh anyways :D

jeseth5251d ago

I agree and disagree with Hufandpuf (Gave him an agree because he makes a good point with some humor).

We are better, no doubt. BUt games have also become, for the most part, EXTREMELY easy. There is no sense of finality anymore when you die. You just go back to your last save or checkpoint over, and over, and over, and over, again!

During the NES days, games were downright cruel. I still don't know anyone that beat the first TMNT game (internet claims are taken with a grain of salt) and the first Castlevania actually made me cry as a child. Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, The Adventures of Link, etc. etc. You had to restart after you ran out of attempts.

Now the games practically walk you through the whole way and there is really no consequnce for dying.

Games are way easier now than ever before.

I trully believe is a matter of checkpoints, Demon souls is hard because your mistakes are really expensive, in other games if you die you just appear 15 secs before u died with no penalties.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr35251d ago

Yes, most games are easy. I'm patiently waiting for Metro: Last Light though because 2033, I felt, presented a very creative challenge in a shooter. I've
lent that game out to a few people, and they just couldn't handle it, lol.

Hufandpuf is right. Most of us grew up with video games. We aren't barely coordinated children anymore. My son started playing video games when he was 7 and had as much trouble with Ratchet & Clank as I had with NES/SNES games. I am 100% sure that when he hits his 20s those same games will forever be "tough" in his mind while the games of that generation will be too easy. Go back to being a 7yr old and see how easy video games are.

@StayStatic and jeseth

Thanks, it was meant to be a joke but I guess people took it too seriously.

Pikajew5251d ago

You should play roguelike games if you want hard games

krontaar5251d ago

Definitely. Just look at dark souls, it had so many checkpoints and was a lot easier than demon's souls.

Optical_Matrix5251d ago (Edited 5251d ago )

May have been easier, but it was still harder than just about every other game this generation except for Demons Souls. I think that's a pretty terrible example personally.

EDIT: That's fair enough. though I wouldn't say it as a money grab, and more of an attempt to widen the audience. So long as they don't take it to the extreme I think thats ok, especially because game budgets are rising and they must see the sales to go along with that.

krontaar5251d ago

I respect your opinion, but all I'm trying to say is that all game developers are trying to cater to the casual audience nowadays, even from software.

In the end, its all about the money.

Neckbear5251d ago

Actually...it wasn't. Had you played both, Dark Soul's beginning levels, such as The Depths or Blighttown, are already much harder than anything in Demon's. From curses to most boss fights, they require sheer skill, whereas in Demon's Souls you could beat almost everything by blocking with your shield and having some foreshadowing. Even if you go full babby easy modo with the Drake Sword/Lightning Spear, you're bound to have some trouble with ghosts and basilisks and giant knights.

Hell, the guys with spears in DaS are harder than 90% of the normal enemies seen in DeS, the other 10% being constituted of, mainly, the Mind Flayers and the Red Eye knights.

krontaar5251d ago

I have obviously played both, I love those games.

Sure some enemies were more difficult to predict, but the game was far less punishing then DeS with all the campfires they layed out everywhere.

codename135251d ago

Yes they are. I really miss old school hard game. :(

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

DarXyde203d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake203d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
