Red 5 explains why Steam isn’t right for Firefall

Player Attack: Following the uber-successful showing of Firefall at PAX Prime, developer Red 5 was approached by Valve, who expressed an interest in hosting the MMO through digital distribution system Steam.

Mark Kern, CEO of Red 5, explains that – while he’d “love to find a way” for the project to work, he had to decline the offer.

some type of deal needs to be reached.both parties could benefit in the end.

1. I'm getting Firefall no matter what cause the game looks brilliant!

2. I agree with Marc Kern on some things that he said but i still think Steam is the way to go when your not an uber super established publisher/Developer.

3. APB Reloaded is free to play.....the game came back from the GRAVE and is now on Steam and so far is doing well.

4. DC Universe is Free 2 Play and on Steam as well and so far no bad news from it or from Crimecraft and other F2P titles on Steam.

5. If APB Reloaded with all it's Debt, Double Dev time, and financial ruin can turn a profit on Steam then I'm positive Firefall and all it's glory most surely can.

6. Marc's 60% cost comment was wrong cause Steam would be Customer Service and bandwidth so all Red 5 would have to worry about is cashing profit checks and making new content.

Companies have the right to not use Steam and lots of times it works out great but Steam is guaranteed gold.....for example.

CD Projekt Red own Good Ole Games.com (GOG.com).
GOG.com sold the DRM free version of The Witcher 2 (Developed by CD Projekt Red)
Steam sold more copies of TW2 than GOG.com some where to the tune of a 4 to 1 ratio and climbing.
sure CDPRed got 100% profit from all GOG.com sales but they made more money from Steam and gained a larger audience.

Steam....it just works!!

A big chunk of profit? From what I read by other developers, it never seemed to be that big of a chunk. I'd like to know how much of a percentage............

STK0265201d ago

A fair argument; although I do hope they reach an agreement, as having Firefall on Steam would likely increase its player base, as Steam seems like a great place to show off your game to PC gamers.

Steam sucks. Us in the developing world hate it like the devil. Foraging 3G data for a month after buying the game is heatbreaking. Why oh why does steam not give option to play without updating. Origin does. GFWL is good for us.

LettingGo5201d ago

Maybe you can help us all on this. How much of a percentage does Steam take? And what do you mean by the 3G thing? I'm just trying to understand this a little better. Please and thank you.

How the DMCA Laws Put Indie Developers at Risk

Filing a false DMCA claim costs nothing, requires no proof, and can destroy an indie game's launch in minutes. Fighting back can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take weeks (if you can afford it at all).

Copyright is copyright. DMCA is a good thing that protects creators IP., revenue and usage. and you can absolutely appeal a wrongful DMCA takedown. It’s happened to me. Was easily resolved.

....I don't feel like you read the article, at all.

it's a good thing, but it's also long been reported, across a variety of industries and websites, that currently the system is ripe for and full of abuses. From fair use strikes, to matters like the one reported in this article. It's clear the law needs some tooth to punish bad actors and that parameters need to be set in how reports are filed; ie human review of said content and not some AI bot false flagging stuff. As is the system is far to easily abused by those who have motive to suppress and flag content they have no business or right to.

No system will ever be perfect, but there needs to be a review, unless it blatant.

Nevers0ft37d ago

Until there's genuine consequences for this type of abuse, it'll keep happening across all media. DMCA is in principle a good thing, but it needs an overhaul.
