Devil May Cry 4: Capcom's Hiroyuki Kobayashi Interview

Capcom seems determined to expand the reach of Devil May Cry 4 beyond the PlayStation and PC worlds, which is where the first three games were released. The current plan is for DMC4 to ship in February 2008 on Xbox 360 and PS3 simultaneously, followed by a PC version later. From what we've seen, it'll be a big debut when it hits the consoles, featuring spacious levels, sassy dialogue, rich combat, powerful weapons, gigantic creatures-and tons of fast-paced action.

TeamXbox recently had a chance to see the work-in-progress, which was running smoothly on the Xbox 360. We also took a few minutes afterward to sit down with Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the game's producer at Capcom, who gave us answers to some of our Devil May Cry and DNC4 questions. What follows is an edited transcript of the meeting, which was facilitated by Gearoid Reidy from Capcom's Osaka office, who served up the translations back and forth.

Hah the devil bringer SO could have been done last gen. I'm excited to know that Dante has new moves, I hope we can unlock him to play during the full game instead of his allotted chapters.

DemiseofPandas6724d ago

They had announced that Dante and Nero will only be playable in their levels. No unlockables of the sort would be made to change that.

Skerj6724d ago

That makes me a saaaaaaaaad panda. Mostly because they said the Nero/Dante ratio would be 70:30. That's freaking lame, I don't want to be stuck with Nero the majority of the time during replays. I was hoping that I would get in some quality time with Dante being able to style switch now and with his new weapons. Ahh well I'm still getting it.

turbogeek6724d ago

On it's way. The reason DMC4 was delayed was because they were having trouble with the 360 version of the game but it's great knowing that even biased sources like 1up admit that the PS3 version is the best. You stupid 360 owners should just stick to your shooting games and Ninja Gayden. DMC is a PlayStation franchise so just stay away from it.

v1c1ous6724d ago

how much will the 360 version outsell the ps3 version.

ready?

3-to-1

Vojkan6724d ago

"Running smoothly on 360"- LOL yeah wright.

Zhuk6724d ago

lucky I speak a little Japanese, Zhuk's Translation:

"We wanted to work on the Xbox 360 because it is the most powerful gaming console ever created and gives us developers the power and tools we need to create the best gaming experiences. It would have been impossible to make any money on the PS3 because of its awful software and hardware sales so we wanted to make this for the Xbox 360 because of its install base and its high attach rate. Combine this with its award winning controller, achievements and revolutionary online features we could not resist developing for the Xbox 360 after we realized what garbage the PS3 is"

Douchebaggery6724d ago

DMC2 ranked 2nd and also DmC ranked 3rd?
What a load of BS!

ABizzel1385d ago

IMO

6. DMC2 6/10
5. DMC4 7.5/10 (Hated Nero, repeat bosses, Dante was the saving grace but only about half the game)
4. DmC 7.5/10 (solid overall, some great ideas, meh story, dialog sucked, and the director almost killed DMC)
3. DMC1 8.5/10 (all around solid)
2. DMC5 9/10 (carried by Dante & Nero gameplay, I didn’t like V’s, Nero’s better but still not a fan)
1. DCM3 10/10 (chef’s kiss)

Vits385d ago

Well, it worked.

This nothingburger of a opinion article got a lot of views and comments.

Pyrofire95384d ago

WHAT!? who in their right mind would put 2 near the top (not at the bottom) unironically?
I think all of them are worth playing in their own right honestly, except 2 unless you REALLY want to experience the whole series.

FinalFantasyFanatic384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

I honestly don't know what the author was smoking, personally I'd rank DMC3 as no.1, maybe DMC5 as second, DMC1 as third, DMC4 as fourth, and DMC as fifth and DMC2 last. such a bizarre list, mybe the author just has strange taste.

DMC2 anywhere but last is crazy. Awful list overall.

BlaqMagiq1385d ago

"Devil May Cry 2 isn’t trash. It’s just misunderstood by a fanbase that doesn’t like change."

This and putting DMC 2 number 2 is all I need to ignore this ranking. DMC2 is absolute trash and it's clear this person doesn't understand exactly why.

Flenter385d ago

For me: 3,1,5,4,2 and then .....Dmc

fsfsxii385d ago (Edited 385d ago )

Why is DmC last? Genuinely curious.

lellkay384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

Dmc is far superior to DMC2 come on

generic-user-name385d ago

"almost 20-year-old series"

It's 24 years old.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

VersusDMC746d ago

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC746d ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Exvalos745d ago

What a weird name, it's essentially devil may cry, devil may cry lol

Cacabunga745d ago

Best to good for me: 3, reboot, 1, 5

2 and 4 are trash, didnt like any of them.
5 has very good gameplay variety but i hated the foes.. it is just insects the whole time. Reboot has the best foes for me

Friendlygamer746d ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey602746d ago (Edited 746d ago )

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya746d ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde746d ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

SeTTriP746d ago

This right here is my order as I thought DMC 5 was amazing and obviously 3 comes after 4 was great and 1 for the nastilgic value it holds 2 was so terrible that my local GameStop gave full refunds to people who returned it.

Bless the adorably all digital future! When it comes to PC games its not as big of an issue because there should always be another way to access single player games, but still, I hate to see anything get delisted.

Aaroncls7823d ago

Well, DMC4 special edition has a lot of issues to run from Steam.
I have to get a modded executable to even be able to run the game on Windows 10.
Not sure if it is because the game runs in DirectX10 or what, but it sucks they have not even tried to fix it.

Sephiroushin822d ago (Edited 822d ago )

DMC4 Special Edition is not delisted, it was just the standard version, it has nothing to do with issues of performance or anything alike. Its just that Capcom probably do not want to sell the standard version, neither the standalone DMC3 version.
