Apple Pretending While Sony Exhibits

PushStartSelect:"Apple has been touting their “entrance” into the video game market for some time now. At every turn Apple has been taking credit for exploiting the handheld market, and how they would “improve” the console market. Every press release covers their app sales and the “gamer” percentage that their devices holds. However there are many reasons why none of this holds true."

the xperia is failing.........even with the controls. Which is why the vita and 3ds are the best options for gaming

tarbis5261d ago

Well, Sony has no full control over the Xperia play since Ericsson are the ones calling the shots there. But, since Sony now has full control, we'll surely see next gen Xperia play that will be the same league as the PSV.

JellyJelly5260d ago

Kinda like the PSP Go? Big winner that one...

SuperBeast8115260d ago

FYI Sony bought Ericsson this year look it up soooooo they control it all

lorianguy5260d ago

@SuperBeast If you bothered to read his post properly, you'd see that he mentioned that.

kevnb5260d ago

sony never bought Ericsson, that would be insane. They bought the 50% stake in their joint venture. Ericsson is still making cell phone towers and a few other communication devices.

my friend the Xperia was an experimental joke from sonys smartphone division, nothing serious.

tarbis5260d ago

clearly you know nothing of sony and ericsson.

snipes1015260d ago

So putting money into developing and putting out a product was just something they did as a joke. Sure.

gamingdroid5260d ago

I would hate to be a consumer buying a product from a company that treats their products as a joke. I might just feel cheated you know especially for an expensive product the company profited from the get go....

Why o why5260d ago (Edited 5260d ago )

Did you ever own an xbox gamingdroid or how about you jelly. Ever had your console maker switch thier focus on you b4;)

All companies have failures.

In terms of i anything killing handhelds..nah. People who buy hand helds are still likely to buy a dedicated handheld. I devices have just broadened the gaming horizons. Without dedicated buttons and controllers its usually always going to be more of a casual affair, still fun, still playable but usually casual. Theres space for them all and just like the wii, many new gamers are introduced to our hobby because of the devices we label casual

gamingdroid5259d ago

@Why o why

I own an Xbox 360, PS3 and a Wii. In fact, I own multiple of most of those consoles.

I'm pretty happy with all the offerings as they each have their own strength. What's your point?

Why o why5259d ago

the first xbox dude as in xbox 1....dropped like a bad habit and was expensive

gamingdroid5259d ago

@Why o why

I did actually own the original Xbox and didn't have any issues with support what so ever.

While the product was being sold, it got lots of games. Many of them are still iconic today.

To me it is a problem when the "maker" continues to sell a product, but NOT support it like the PSP Go. It was over priced, the games released didn't include all the UMD ones (despite the promise), many games released was long after the UMD release (another promise failed) and frequently cost more than their UMD brethren.

The Xperia seems to be moving down that path too!

The Xperia Play is one of the best-selling phones on the market, last I heard. The Verizon 3G version is the best free-with-contract phone you can even get, these days, and the low-priced 4G version, that AT&T carries now (because it proved popular as a 3G phone), isn't too spendy either.

I happen to own one, as well, and its the best phone I have ever owned.

Where do you get the idea that it's "failing"? Got any links to back that claim up?

Undeadwolfy5260d ago

I have an Xperia Arc S (which I f***ing love), and even I ish I had one sometimes. It looks so slick with that design and I imagine playing games are awesome with the PS controls (for those that support it).

tarbis5261d ago

At last someone making a lot of sense regarding mobile gaming. I applaud you dustin.

hadouken0075261d ago

Of all these smart phones apples garbage, apples selling last years technology today.

saladthieves5260d ago

Let's also not forget the people who try to justify the ridiculously high price tags by saying stuff like the iPhone is the best device IN THE WORLD.

Why?

-Because Lord Steve Jobs said so.

But he's dead.

-Who?

Steve Jobs.

-Who's Steve Jobs?

*facepalm*

irepbtown5260d ago

Samsung Galaxy S 2 is waaaaayy ahead of Apples iPhone 4s.
The graphics (games that is) are absolutely jaw dropping. And the price, much cheaper.
On contract and Pay as you go.

Even with tablets they are being surpassed by other brand such as HTC with their new 'HTC Flyer' and the Motorola Xoom.

And has anyone seen when a new store opens?
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Truly a facepalm.

B1663r5260d ago

10 years ago we had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope, and Johnny Cash. Now we have no Jobs, no Cash, and no Hope.

lorianguy5260d ago

The iPhone 4 actually costs apple $194 to make, and the 4S not a lot more, so the ridiculously high price tags are, for the most part, profit.

Now that's a healthy business model.

GraveLord5261d ago

I agree. If all you do is download free time-waster on your iPhone, you're not a gamer. I find it laughable that people who play Angry Birds consider themselves gamers. Its insulting to us real gamers.

saladthieves5260d ago

The media (and these so called "industry experts") continue to think that people like us who play console/PC games like Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, GeOW 3 etc. are in the same group as those ones who do nothing but farm their virtual lands and flick birds across their tiny screens all day.

They just keep on getting it wrong (and they'll probably never get it right) because they never care about the gaming industry. Tell them that gaming is a hobby and they'll call you a fool. Show them that gaming is the largest entertainment industry in the world and they'll laugh at you.

kcuthbertson5260d ago

I honestly don't know anyone who plays just angry birds and calls themselves a gamer though...

The media would like to call them "gamers" but people who play farmville and angry birds don't call themselves that. It's quite stupid. Ask 99% of people who play games exclusively on phones/ipods, and I can guarantee almost none of them would call themselves a gamer.

MASTER_RAIDEN5260d ago

YES!

Listen, all i know is that i own a grand total of about 15 games across my ps3, 360 and wii.
I payed actual MONEY to get every single one of those games.
I have about 30 games on my droid that i didnt pay a dime for.
about 40something games on my ipod touch. together, they ended up costing me about 99 because i payed for doodlejump.

Ducky5260d ago

No, it isn't insulting to 'us' real gamers.

There isn't a creed or a handbook that you follow to be considered a 'gamer'. As long as you like to waste time playing games, you're in the club.

BISHOP-BRASIL5260d ago

Yes, we're all gamers, but we're not really on the same club through.

The gaming industry today is so big that mostly everyone will get in contact with gaming down the road. But there's a difference between "gamers" that stumble at free games at Facebook and iTunes and "gamers" that pick their stuff because they like it... We could call it passive gamers and active gamers, but I don't think we really need naming for that anyway, just saying, it's not the same group.

It's also makes a lot of difference business wise... To start, the gaming industry works differently to each public.

Active gamers (in lack of a better term, it don't mean hardcores or casuals) are costumers, we invest our money in the product of the gaming industry. So devs and publishers work is to make and promote the game so we choose 'em.

But when we're talking about Angry Birds or Farmville, the marketing companies are the costumers, they invest money to have ads shown to the players. So in this case the players are more of a product than costumers and publishers are more interested in having a lot of people playing than to have a good game going (which logic dictates is need to have a lot of players, but practically it's not what happens).

Again, this has nothing to do with hardcore gaming VS casual gaming and anyone gaming is a gamer indeed, but what I found really insulting is Apple braggin to be part of gaming industry when they barelly make anything game related, at best they have nice platforms to put ads on.

thewhoopimen5260d ago

@Gravelord I think you need to take a look at what's available these days on the iPhone/iPad stores. It's not just Angry Birds anymore like some of you android fanboys think. I imagine some of you guys think Android App Store = iOS App store but the truth is Android's store only holds about 1/10 of what's available on the iOS (i'm not exaggerating, look up the software release statistics). EA released the full versions of Grand Theft Auto III, FIFA 12, Madden 12, The Sims 3, etc on the IOS. There's also Civ Revolution, A Bard's Tale, Shift 2, and homegrown titles like Infinity Blade 2, Aquaria, Terraria (STBR) etc. These aren't cut down versions of titles, but full articulating titles. Don't be in the dark just cuz of your console loyalty.
I'm a PS3 guy and I've really been impressed by available content lately that's being released on the platform. Developers are going full steam on iOS.

Why o why5260d ago

Seen those games. Got an i pad, played the street fighter. Play that ios street fighter vs somebody with a pad and i couldnt care what games get released. Not even comparable apart from they look the same. Touch screen just isnt a pad or buttons.....ios doesnt even have haptic feedback...wtf. Got android too s2. The games are not comparable right now. Not a million miles apart but not close enough for me to dicth a dedicated handheld especially something like the vita

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele18d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk18d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit18d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg18d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay18d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger19d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300019d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde19d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde18d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
