Metroid Primarily Ruined

When I was but a lad, I was enthralled by a little game called Metroid. Actually, you might say I was in love – madly so at that. There was something about that game that captured me completely. The music was superb and intoxicatingly catchy, the creatures and characters were lovably memorable, and the style of it all was so surreal and bizarre; it was a beautiful medley of which I could never get enough. -Leviathyn's zevallo

Loved the Prime series so I respecfully disagree. But Other M was a disaster.

Shnazzyone5257d ago

Other M was bad. You are the only person I have ever heard of to think these things about the prime series. Metroid was a dark since the start and they did that by creating a sprawling world things only seem darker because of the retro group maturing the sci-fi flavor of the series. It became a smarter game. That games greatest idea was scanning. the act of gathering info was taken to the next level. I think your simply being ridiculous.

The other M was bad? The only thing bad around here is your taste in games.

Tenkay235257d ago

Other M was an abomination and if Team Ninja ever comes close to any other Nintendo IP again I will stop gaming. The prime series was different because it was first person but it as so innovative. The scanning, the art style, the different environments, the challenging puzzles, epic boss battles, all kinds of weapons, suits, backtracking , and awesome techno music. The wii remote and nunchuk are the perfect control scheme for Metroid (hence the Metroid prime trilogy on wii) but the days of classic 2D Metroid on a console are gone. Maybe on the 3DS but not on the main console.

Gr815256d ago

Why are the days of a 2D Metroid on a console gone? Many thought the same thing of a 2D Mario on a console and Wii changed that.

I would have loved a 3rd person 3D Metroid instead of the crappy other M. This is what happens when Devs want to get 'creative' instead of giving the gamers what they want.

But if Retro isn't going to handle another FP Metroid I think the only salvation for the series would be a return to 2D. Sakamoto and Team Ninja really damaged the brand. Much like Square/Enix damaged FF with the last entry.

Tenkay235256d ago

I loved the 2D Metroid as well. My reasoning for why they won't appear on consoles is because developers dont take risks anymore and they already know the first person games can sell well so they will stick with that. They will take more risks like developing a 2D Metroid on the 3DS cuz its cheaper to develop for. That is my reason anyway and my opinion. Not fact. But it makes sense

Gr815256d ago (Edited 5256d ago )

Absolutely your opinion is of rational thinking. I think the portable space is perfect for a 2D Metroid Comeback and depending on the performance bring 2d Metroid back to the Wii U as well. I think there is still a huge market out there for 2D titles.

While Metroid has never been a hugely popular brand, it was labled as a game for the 'elite gamer' when it first released. But I think yet again, modern games are way to wordy and filled with too much fluff or flash and lacking on the substance.

Metroid Prime: The Story So Far - Everything You Need To Know Before Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

"Metroid Prime Trilogy, the Wii compilation of Retro Studios' first-person take on the Metroid series, launched in North America on 24th August 2009, exactly 15 years ago.

In honour of that sparking release (well, a little less sparkling than the originals in some places due to a few missing effects), we're taking the opportunity to recap Samus' story so far in the Metroid Prime games while we wait for the fourth numbered entry..." - Ollie Reynolds | NintendoLife

my most anticipated game.
just started playing the Trilogy on WiiU again (love the motion controls with wiimote)
amazing series!

Neonridr625d ago

if they aren't going to remaster all 3 titles prior to 4, it would have been nice if they just gave us a bare bones Switch port of the Wii U Trilogy. Thankfully I own that so I can still replay all 3 before 4 comes along.

all 3 titles remastered would be awesome.
i would still miss the motion controls though :(

There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.

I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.

ApocalypseShadow789d ago (Edited 789d ago )

Agreed. When I got my NES back then, I of course had Super Mario Bros. But I also got Double Dribble, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Rad Racer, Zelda and Metroid. Loved playing all of them over and over. But Metroid was so deep and the music was so other worldly, that that game has stuck with me to this day decades later.

Sure other awesome games came along like Contra, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc. But Metroid really hit that sci-fi fix. And the twist of finding out who was in the suit was one of those great moments in gaming history talking with other friends in the neighborhood that had the console that rushed to the end to find out for themselves.

Definitely deserves hall of fame like many other picks. Should have been inducted a long time ago.

Why isn’t it in already?

Miraak82 788d ago

If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .

OtterX788d ago

Yea, I agree that Super Metroid REALLY raised the bar on atmosphere and exploration, still in my Top 10 or 20 games of all time. The original Metroid did set a good framework, but Super Metroid perfected it in its first sequel. Since it's the only one up for vote, I'd still vote for the original Metroid bc it did establish a very good concept of gaming in a more primitive gaming era. But, you're absolutely right.

Chocoburger788d ago (Edited 788d ago )

The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.

If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.
