VG Cgarts, but if they are somewhat close, how they did the 10% thing, then I think this more than proves that people that own a PS3 don't have it for a gaming machine, but a BR player. So unless they drop the PS3 to the same price as the 360 or lower, then the somewhat casual gamer that wants to go next-gen, is just going to keep going with the 360. Not taking anything away from the Wii, because it is obviously the clear winner, but is it actually next-gen? IMO, not at all, but you can't argue with how much it is selling.

I get the feeling that people had already made their minds up on what console they'd get this holiday. Sony should have dropped the price globally during E3, instead of just before the holidays - by the time people are writing their wishlists. But there's no disputing the fact that sales are certainly bad.

The only hope we have is 2008 now. That not only those franchise games sell tremendously well but also that the competition slows down in sales figures. If these two things do not happen, and I personally believe we'll have a better picture of the console wars this time next year, then Sony will finish in 3rd. Way behind in 3rd.

Although I'm a PLAYSTATION 3 fan, there's no denying their stupid methods at the start of this generation and it all comes down to one thing; the price issue for the PLAYSTATION 3. If that console started at $399, I'm more than confident that it would have taken the X360 in sales, even after a year's launch. But it didn't because it was effectively a Blu-Ray player until the price depicted as a games console; to the consumers eyes anyway. It's a lesson to Sony that, part of me hopes, they learn the hard way.

What's really disappointing is the software sales, Bladestar said the truth. Ratchet & Clank, for an AAA game to a console deprived of that, has bombed in my opinion. It dropped out of the Top 40 charts in Europe within two weeks of its release and I don't even look at how it's selling in America. Uncharted seems to be going in the same path.

Things will obviously improve over the next few months, but this isn't about general improvement for Sony. It's about achieving something extraordinary, probably never seen in the industry before, and that is making a come-back to excel not on their own sales trends, but that of Microsoft's too. It seems like 2008, they'll need to double the sales of Microsoft consistently, every month for it to restore confidence in its fanbase.

I will be shocked if Microsoft continued to outsell the PLAYSTATION 3 in 2008. Absolutely shocked, I think even Xbox fans would be choking at that.

When an American publisher looks at the software sales for American games and see the PS3 doing bad they will start thinking about the $$$. $$$ runs the show not fanboys. You Sony guys need to get off the net a buy some games now. Killzone 2 looks to be an American game. It would sux for it not to push 3 million in the first month of release. A $40 million budget games should shut all sales of like games out. We should be talking about the Killzone2 effect in 08.

That's what people seem to be forgeting the games that are not selling are 1st party games as well. This could very well be a red-flag for 3rd party devs. if 1st party games can't garner huge sales what's in it for them??? If games like unreal tourney 3 and mgs4 don't sell well we may see 3rd party devs back off from sony. Right now making a game for the ps3 is a huge gamble for devs looking to cash in. Especially if the attach rate is minimal and a competitor has a attach rate of something like 4-1.

Yes the 360 will beat ps3 this holiday season but i see a rough rough road ahead come 2008. The bottom line is 360s are still failing, games are already coming out that exceed Halo 3 such as COD4 and UT3 which both game will be on PS3 and 360. and 360 has a very weak line up for 2008.

You can sit there and throw out names like Ninja Gaiden 2, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Alan Wake, Banjo and TOO Human all you want BUT NONE OF those titles will come close to the appeal of games such as... Little big planet, KZ2, MGS4,Gran Turismo 5, Socom and Tekken 6 not to mention Home.. 2008 will be a whole different ball game. PS3 will dominate 2008

Bottom line is if MS expects to stay in this race at the same momentum they better announce something huge for next year. and I mean something like Gears of war 2 type huge or it will be struggling big time in 2008

I don't understand where people are saying that Sony is "underperforming" in America. I mean...if you wanted to actually clarify or correct your response by saying "The PS3 is underperforming in America" then I would say that you might be on to something.

But, then again I could also point out that the PS3 (at a much higher price point) has managed to mirror the 360 launch when it was released in it's first year. Plus, the 360 had all of 2 years to build its name and fling itself out on to the market. Sure, it's got more games and support now, but I remember when the only thing the 360 had worth playing was Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Halo 2, and....thats about it. I also remember when LIVE was a fledging online service that was bugged completely out of control and was containing nothing but a few trailers ,demos, and thats about it.

The PS3 is actually doing what it's supposed to be doing: "Penetrating the market" and it has proven that it can do just that. It has sold very well in Japan, European nations, and the sales in America (although every xbox fanboy on VGcharts said it would never rise above 20,000 per week) have nearly tripled what they were in the first of the launch thanks to new games and lower prices.

Also, lets not forget that people STILL buy the Playstation 2 and last time I checked that still counted as a Sony product and the combined sales of both the PS2 and PS3 worldwide still beat down the 360 sales overall. Heck, Sony is expected to turn profitable again by March of 2008, which is typical for them since every time they have released a new console they have spent an average of 7 quarters in the red before the console took off and overtook the market. PS1 had a non-profitable first year, PS2 spent a year and a half in the red, and the PS3 is expected to follow the path of the PS2 and it has proven that it has already started down that path.

Not to mention Sony still has the successful sales of the Blu-Ray format. It's a three pronged attack (a trident if you will) to break further in to the advancing technology market and I think that Sony (and the PS3) will be just fine.

EDIT: Oh, just wanted to point out the impressive pick-up in sales for the PSP as well and with games like FINAL FANTASY VII: CRISIS CORE being released for the handheld here in America in 2008 I expect it to pick up some massive sale as well. Not to mention the new Wild Arms PSP exclusive title that is being released.

All is looking up for Sony and I'm kinda disappointed that a lot of people are too eager to jump on that "I hate Sony" fanboy train that the Xbox camp has been building on for years.

I do own both consoles and 5 months ago If someone came up to me and asked me which console they should purchase between the PS3 and 360 I would have said 360 hands down because of the games.. But now, not so sure.. The PS3 has great games such as Warhawk,COD4, Assasins Creed,UT3,Orange Box, Resistance, Uncharted and Ratchet along with free online and a lot more reliable hardware, also with a very bright 2008 just around the corner..

All the 360 has over the PS3 is a slightly better online service which you have to pay for, Halo 3 and thats about it, with a very weak sauce 2008 line up and also the PS3 price is very very attractive at this point. Anyone who is already counting sony out will have a rude awakening next year

They appeal to a specific group of gamers and do not have the mass appeal of a Halo 3. And when someone says I want to play with all my friends online. The first console of choice is not PS3 its 360. When someone say I just want to play casual games Wii is the console of choice. This leaves the PS3 having no clear definition or differential in the marketplace. This is why people are not flocking to the PS3. Sony has not shown consumers anything that sets it appart form the 360 or the Wii. Blu-ray is not the difference either becuase most consumers are not even remotely concerned with HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

Earlier this year, ps3 owners were whining about lack of AAA games. Now you have AAA games, Uncharted, R&C, Heavenly sword to some extent.shows off what the ps3 is capable of. One would have thought, giving the fact that Ps3 owners have been starved of AAA games , they would rush to get these games in their numbers.One year delay didn't help. Seems as though hardcore gamers solely interested in gaming no matter the brand and where loyalties lie have jumped ship (Myself included), only hardcore Sony fanboys are left. Hence the lackluster software sales.

I always get a chuckle out of Sony fanboys insistence that 2008 will save the PS3 because of its purportedly superior line up of games. If I were Microsoft, I wouldn't change places with Sony's line up of game for a minute. There really is no mystery or uncertainty here. Microsoft's games line up for 2008 is far more vast that the Playstation 3s. The PS3 has a few big name games that are currently exclusives--third party games MGS3 and FFXIII and first party Killzone 2. And in fact, Square Enix has indicated that FFXIII will actually be releasing in 2009, not 2008.

If you look at Micrsoft's confirmed 2008 line up, it's mind boggling. There are more than twice as many games confirmed for release on the Xbox 360 in 2008 that there are for the PS3. PS3 has to sell half of what 360 does in the United States. According to VG chartz it's mission accomplished. But VG Chartz isn't accurate.

I'm also seing a lot of PS3 fans overreacting. They expected PS3 to start outselling 360 or something. I'm more realistic, the target was to sell half of what 360 does.

That's enough for PS3 to survive to fight another day. In August and September PS3 was putting up dying numbers being outsold by 360 4-1 or even 5-1.

Being out sold 2-1 is hardly something to celebrate about, but when considering the console seemed to be dying at times, it could be something to build upon.

I see exactly what you are saying. I thought PS3 fanboys understood taht the things Sony did down the stretch would not be enough to outsell the 360 this year. I fully expected the 360 to still outsell the PS this year, BUT Sony has laid a better foundation for 2008 that they previously had. How soon we forget the 360 was outselling the PS by margins of 5:1, then it was 4:1, then we saw 3:1, and now we are at 2:1. I'm talking USA ppl. Taht is fact. nothing to disagree with there. The 360 was/is supposed to outsell the PS right now. It has not just great games, but SYSTEM sellers (there is a difference between a great game and a system seller), great online, etc. But one thing no fanyboy on either side should over look is that gap has been growing smaller and smaller. another fact as enident by the 360's once 4:1 margin now down to 2:1.

ANOTHER BUT if Sony does not start picking up the pace rather quickly in 2008, then I think we can call this pretty much a rap. game over. If Sony does not at least even out the USA by, I'd say March MAYBE April, then its all over. UT3 would be next but I dont think that is a SYSTEM SELLER at least not on consoles. Killzone, well who knows, I wasnt much of a fan of the first one and this series really only became (in)famous due to the pre-rendered showing. I have never seen a game taht was so so the first go round get as much praise and hype as Killzone. Ever. PPl act liek the first one was a great game. It was barely a good game for crying out loud. Anyway, everything leading up to 3/1 will be a VERY telling sign.

Nintendo strategy was perfect, like it or not PS2's main fanbase was casual gamers(they knew that and thats who they targeted)= those gamers who just want to play something fun on a budget, they don't care for spec's and the stuff we talk about daily, the controls and the simple games are fun to them.....I dont like the wii for exactly that reason, its games are mediocore, too simple and easy for me, nothing I feel like I haven't seen before, I like cutting edge games that make you say "wow" or "omg that was cool game"....or in other words 360 and ps3 appeals to this crowd but once again the 360 has MORE of those type of games, bluray/cell/tech spec's dont sell games= 360 appeals more to the hardcore console gaming crowd and the pc gamers, mathmatically speaking this group is much smaller than the casual group, which is why the wii is doing so well,

but in the competition between 360 and ps3, I think the 360 has a clear edge, and in the US this is the general opinion of gamers, like some have realized the ps brand does not carry the weight it used to, the US consumer forms an opinion very quickly and its hard to change their minds, sony stumbled hard out of the gates, people were waiting with their mouths open because of the things sony promised, seriously alot of gamers are NOT as informed as you and I but all they knew is that Sony said their games would be amazing compared to the competition when the ps3 released, it didn't happen, and consumers stop waiting, do you know how bad Gears screwed sony, Gears still today is thought of as the best looking game on any console, but people had unreasonable expectations when Resistance hit and was compared to Gears, the gaming world was in shock, from there on ps3 was in a dogfight, it lost that ps swagger, it doesn't matter that Resistance was a launch game,(it does) but the general public doesn't care, it was put up or shut up time, and all they know is that 360 has this fcking sweet looking game out now and the ps3 launched with an OK game. I know sonykids will swear but, but, but, RROD!, ok thats fine and it did hurt micro and sales but when its all said and done remember once again the general public supported the ps2 even with defects, and they are not loyal, it had games and thats what they wanted, and the bottom line is they ALREADY know they won't have to pay out of pocket IF their 360 breaks, they KNOW they are covered under the warranty, and for most people that is enough.
