Remember 2011 for: Dark Souls

TVGB: It’s three in the morning and I’m stuck in Blighttown, low on health and out of healing items. To one side of me, an army of fire-spurting, poison-giving bugs and an equally treacherous swamp. On the other, a swarm of dagger-wielding minions, club-swinging giants and a steep climb up to the safety of a bonfire. I have somewhere in the reach of 20,000 souls which, with one wrong move, will all disappear.

I'm so close to the end. The finish is in sight but in some ways I don't want it to end. So i'm playing GT5 hah.

Blaine5258d ago

That's what NG+ is for! Hell I platted the game almost 2 months ago and I still can't stop playing it!

dedicatedtogamers5258d ago

I'm just about to finish my New Game ++. My character is Lvl 154 and I'm 132 hours into the game.

Whether it's GotY or not...I definitely got my money's worth, and I'm not even done with the game yet.

zerocrossing5258d ago

Nah, Dark Souls just killed the other M.

I love Dark Souls, but for me, it's 2X as hard as Demon's Souls. No less enjoyable, just much tougher. I don't know what it is....anyone else feel the same?

Skizelli5258d ago

I've never played Demon's Souls, so I couldn't give you a fair comparison, but I've heard the exact opposite from friends who have; not that it's easier per se, but that it added some things (like bonfires) making it more enjoyable than its predecessor.

Great game nevertheless. I highly enjoyed it.

MagicAccent5258d ago

No, it's definitely harder. The hub in demon's souls was a safe haven and it was fairly easy to go back and forth between the worlds thanks to it. Dark soul's took away what little saftey there was, and added a seamless world that had to be traversed by on foot, every time.

Definitely harder..

BlackTar1875258d ago

yea def. harder

Demon souls was a easy game after the 1st 2 hrs EXCEPT the Valley of defilement that place still haunts me

Blaine5258d ago

@Magic

You'll get the ability to warp (from any bonfire) to certain bonfires soon, which will alleviate the walking back and forth.

My first impression was that Dark was harder, but now I find it extremely easy (I beat the whole game with only a dagger and no shield... at level 23!). So I don't think either is harder, just that they're different.

Also the patch did make it easier than it was before.

Both valley of defilement and tower of latria were messed up. Especially at the end of valley with all those aborted babies.

The second level ( forgot the name) with the huge dragon was sorta scary too, felt like you were slowly descending into hell.

Actually, I disagree. The concepts that Demon's Souls dealt gamers was difficult to wrap your head around. I only recently revisited my game (I never finished) after beating Dark Souls and got my ass handed to me at SL 100'ish.

I felt Dark Souls was way easier. You have check points and health potions. Actual drop rates not dependent upon some mystical thing (aka World/player Tendency) and even items to make drop rates better (maybe I never found the item in Demon's Souls). As I said.. I only recently figured out how to change World Tendency but even that seems way complicated. You can farm humanity in Dark Souls. I still have no idea how or if you can farm human form in Demon's Souls. I wanted to try and finally get that Old King's armor and he ate my face off in one on one combat... ended up Thief Ringing/backstabbing him...

Idk... I LOVE them both... but man, I just don't get it when I see how others had a more difficult time with Dark Souls than Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls still kicks my ass over and over.

Blaine5258d ago

Farm the plague babies in 5-3 for Ephemeral Eyes. Good drop rate, so you'll get more than you need in no time.

Nevers5257d ago

LOL... thanks Blaine!!!

Fantastic game, simply put. It's the real goty, skyrim or no. This was the 'best' game of 2011.

Drekken5258d ago

ABSOLUTELY. People just give Bethesda games free passes and pedestals.

Like it or not, its time to admit Dark Souls is a horror game

Before Elden Ring and Bloodborne, FromSoftware's talents for all things creepy and chilling gave Dark Souls an atmosphere unlike any other.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

DarXyde196d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake196d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
