Upgrade Your Broken PS3 for $99

Sony's got another great promotion for gamers. Has that 60 gb ps3 finally bit the dust? Well instead of paying $150 to get it fixed how about paying $100 to get a newer 120gb slim. Goozernation has the details of how to take advantage of this good deal.

Thanks for the heads up, kube.

dont want a slim,.. love my sexy ass phat curvy 60gb ps3 PLEASENTLY SEXY 3!!!

Imalwaysright5263d ago

Yeah. Trading a phat 60 GB for a 120GB would be a downgrade.

T9005263d ago (Edited 5263d ago )

I thought upgrade is when you get an improvement over the previous model.

When i upgrade a CPU or a GPU on my PC i expect better performance, while retaining all the previous features, hell i would rather expect to gain features(DX11 etc)

With the new PS3, you dont gain any improvement in performance, rather you lose out on features you previously had.

Hence i wouldnt call this a upgrade, Its rather a downgraded replacement.

cjflora5263d ago

Care to upload some photos of your PS3 running otherOS since it's a feature you're clearly using right now?

BrianC62345263d ago

The Slim model is nice but I wouldn't mind having my old 60GB Fat PS3. It died a couple years ago. I wonder if installing a 7,200 RPM hard drive in the early models is a bad idea? After I did that my PS3 died. Maybe it was too much heat. The Slim models put out a lot less heat so it shouldn't be a problem but when I installed a 500GB drive in mine I got a 5,400 RPM drive just to make sure.

superadvanced5263d ago

upgrade? my 60 gig has a 320 gig hdd a card reader 4 usb ports and plays almost all ps2 games.

No problem its not a bad deal if you dont want the 60gb anymore

swishersweets200315264d ago

is this for a limited time or forever? because that be a good deal for me to send in my broken ps3.

PS3ROCKS5263d ago

They had this for over a year.

ABizzel15263d ago (Edited 5263d ago )

I miss it as well, but it's not that big of a deal now thanks to all the PS Collections (God of War, ICO & SofC, MGS, DMC, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Sly, Jak, and possibly more)

Also PSN is now selling PS2 games, and there may be a chance we can play those on PS Vita, so out of all that I'm missing a few games that I loved on PS2.

My 60GB was still running, but I felt it was best to upgrade before it was too late. I got the Uncharted 3, 320GB bundle with Uncharted 1 & 2, for $250, and I haven't missed Backwards compatibility that much.

Godmars2905263d ago

Well, right now I'm playing Onimusha and after that Xenosaga. So I'm still using it.

Mind you my PS3's broken down on me twice now and the second time I was given this offer, so I'm kind of wondering how this is news.

ABizzel15263d ago

Yeah I understand, I have a few games I wish I could still go back and play whenever I wanted.

T9005263d ago

@Abillzel1

So you are fine paying for games you already own again?

What happens when PS4 launches, if it doesnt have BC will you buy remakes from the PS2 again? and perhaps even PS3 game remakes?

You'd have to be a real glutton for punishment if you are going to be paying for the same games again and again, i thought they said console gaming was supposed to be cost effective, doesnt look like it.

insomnium25263d ago

my god godmars. You just reminded me about Onimusha. Any word on a HD remake for those? I LOVED those games to death back in the day.

Jeebus5263d ago

Honestly, I do kind of miss my BC, but I still have my PS2, so I'm not too fussed.

svoulis5264d ago

Wow, that's very generous of them.

Death5263d ago

Generous?

They are taking a much better equipped console and giving you an "upgrade" to less. It's nice to have the option to retain the better console for $50 more than the "upgrade".

-Death

svoulis5263d ago

Yes Generous.

Why? Because if my hardware died I'd rather pay 99$ for a new one (even if it is missing PS2 playback) I think they are more so focusing on the PS3 aspect of the system. If you really need it to play PS2 games after it dies just spend the extra money and get it fixed. If you don't need the feature, than it is a great deal over spending money to fix it or replace it with a new one.

So yes.

Generous.

Death5262d ago

Read the story. By "new", they mean refurbed 120 gig console, not still hot off the assembly line new. It's the same process as repairing, it's just already done. $99 is pretty much the going rate for all manufacturers repairs today. The older models cost more since supply is much more limited and more complex due to the additional features and chips. Allowing customers to downgrade to the newer refurb is hardly generous, it's easier for Sony since they have more sitting around.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8518d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele18d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk17d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay17d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10118d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit17d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg17d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10117d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14918d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle31d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit31d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog31d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog31d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad31d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_31d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage31d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda31d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
