Well as much as I'd love to see it I'm not sure how it would work out in favor of Sega. First in order for it to smoke PS3 and 360 out of the water they would need to put a lot of power under the hood and still sell it at a nice price and lose a whole lot of money right away. Plus people would still need to buy it which after such a long time since there last console along with the fact that 3 consoles are out already might make that dream a bit far fetched. Then they would need to talk 3rd parties into making games for them. Another fine how do you do for them seeing that development cost is skyrocketing what business sense would go and make a game for a console who's only claim to fame was after it was out of the game. Dreamcast was/is great. The only thing is most didn't realize this fact till it was to late to support it.

But I don't see it happening. Sega has burned to many bridges in the past. They have let all their franchises disappear or rot into mediocrity. They also don't have the money to compete with the likes of Nintendo, Sony and MS. Of course that could change if they partnered up with Apple or another mega corporation.

People would be having enough money and wanting to spend after buying the other consoles years before, the Dreamcast doesn't have to compete with other new hardware/consoles and has 2 to 3 years advance of the PS4 and Xbox 720 whatever

Shenmue, Powerstone and the mighty Soul Calibre were all EXCEPTIONAL games and I thoroughly enjoyed my gaming experience on the console.

Until............some mates of mine suggested I try out the new Playstation console. All my friends promised that the PS would blow the DC out the water and that it was COOL to BUY one. After all the hype though, I wish I'd stuck with the DC. A console delivered by a company with an actual gaming heritage as opposed to a "Jack of all trades" company like SONY.

Now that I think back, the majority of games on the PS1 and PS2 were just your average, run of the mill games (especially from SCEA). I honestly don't know why everyone got caught up in the SONY hype.

I wish I had stuck with the DC. A GAMING console made by an actual GAMING company.

Coud this be sega's version of the Ngage? (not the handheld but the mobile gaming platform for mobile phones?)

Man, it would be great to have another platform choice. More options equals more competition equals more great games. A four way console battle would be amazing!

I'm not sure if Sega has the financial muscle to enter the fight right now (it hasn't been THAT long since they dropped from the hardware market) and their games haven't exactly been the super popular big sellers that pull in the huge profits to finance this sort of move. A team up with Apple would be huge! We'll see.

Dreamcast 2 will return to blow Playstation out the water!!!! Playstation was Dreamcast's greatest enemy that destroyed the first Dreamcast. One issue it might have again if it comes back is the lack of support from EA games, which could be a big letdown.

I doubt Sega is working on a "new" Dreamcast. Sega is not as STUPID as M$. Sega understands the JEM that is the PS3, and also understand how long it was built for.

By the time a new Dreamcast would roll around, the PS3 momentum will be so fast that Sega would again run out of money to support the "new" Dreamcast.

Now I could see something along the lines of M$, Sega, and EA joining forces to develop some sort of gaming system since the XBox name has FOREVER been tainted with the FAMOUS RROD.....AAHAHAHHAHHAHA

I've had a blast to enjoy, because it had so many quality games. For such a short library, and of course Sony hogging all the Developers as they did with Nintendo.

I went from N64 to Dreamcast when entering college. Anyhow I doubt there will be a new "Dreamcast" just not enough room to squeeze in 4 Consoles. Sega needs to re-invent it's games and bring some new stuff to the table. SEGA always had bad timing, I think.

SEGA had all the good fighting games , as you can see CAPCOM has always supported every Console no matter what, which is why I did not understand the whole DMC fanboy outcry. Whatever SEGA decides to do, I'll always like their games like I do Nintendo. I doubt a new Sega console though. SEGA is known for making wacky first party games but I would like to see what they do this gen.

This is not a market Sega should get in.

Right now, you have 3 strong competitors. It's different than the NES/SNES days.

Sega doesn't have enough good IP to compete with Nintendo now.
Sega doesn't have the money to compete against Microsoft.

sega is not the best company in the world, but it's always been my favourite. the only nintendo i ever got was the n64(to me it was that good). i always thouht the dreamcast was like a blueprint for microsoft and what the future would be like(but with two analog sticks). i doubt this is true , but hope it is. i think if they can't come up with incredible tech they shouldn't do it or it will bwcome a nich like wii. i'd like to stress that, a whole lot of what is considered nextgen today sega did it lastgen, and a lot of games that are considered great today like bioshock,darkness,original sins,and the only football game with trully decent fisics engine were made by former sega employees

it's not gonna happen. Sega sold the Sonic IP to Nintendo and well sega with no sonic is like peanutbutter without the jelly. I could see them however partnering with either Nintendo or Msoft in manufacturing either one of their next gen consoles. It could go either way seeing as how msoft and sega have had a prior business relationship (windows ce OS was used in the dreamcast) or nintendo seeing as how they've partnered this gen with games like samba de amigo coming to wii, and sonic appearing on the wii just as much as mario these days

It would be nice for SEGA to enter the console hardware market again as it would be a day one purchase for me, if they ever did release the Dreamcast 2 i suspect it may well turn out to be a handheld

whatever happens i am a big SEGA fan and still play my Japanese Dreamcast on a regular basis, i look forward to the day i can go into a games shop and purchase a new piece of SEGA gaming hardware but i suspect it won't happen any time soon.

Did Sega actually ever drop the HW business ? The Dreamcast was a spin off of their Naomi (and later Naomi2) Arcade platform. They traditionally use SH4 + PowerVR as their platform. (some history here http://www.system16.com/mus... Their latest machine was PC based (the "Lindbergh", P4, 1G RAM, GForce6). I have no idea, what they are using now, some rumors of an "Arcade-PS3" are out, but I have never seen anything like that (someone mentioned the VF5 port from Arcade to PS3 was easy because of the GForce - which would refer to the GF6 in the Lindbergh to the RSX in the PS3, I would guess).

BTW: The Dreamcast (or Naomi) was also kind of used as a slotmachine in Aristocrats MK6 (now replaced by Gen7). While it was their own design, it is based on the SH4+PowerVR core of the Naomi.

Well, but Sega could scale the Lindbergh down to a console, I'd guess. Give them 2 more years, and that platform could do real 1080p @ 60fps with 1-2GB RAM and a BD drive. It won't be easy, but feature wise - and timing wise - this might be a perfect date to blow the PS3 and the 360 out of the water. At that point, it could (and has to be!) available for $199. (PS3 and 360 will match for that pricepoint by 2010 - and we'll see a Wii-HD anyhow, so this again would Sega give a chance).

They could easily topple Microsoft from a hardware standpoint, but after the messy deaths of Sega Saturn (my first console) and the Dreamcast, I doubt developers would want to join them again.

The dreamcast is definately the gaming community's best loved failure of all time and just based on the affection that people talk about the console with I think that lots of people would buy it,maybe sega has been listening to us all??

It would really need to swoop in on and challenge whichever console is in third place sales wise just now to really be in with a shot of being a long term financial prospect for sega. Maybe the company wants to get revenge on Sony for killing the original dreamcast with the PS2 all those years ago :)

I sure hope SEGA does come out with another console...I think it will be good competition for Sony & Ms. We all know Nintendo will sell regardless. And if they make a comeback I expect it to be the best console in the market in the next gen. Don't forget Sega has been in the gaming business for a long time. They've developed games for all platforms. They probably look at the hardware and say to themselves, we can do much better than this if we had the financial support. Not to mention the fact that they would have great first party titles, only 2nd to Nintendo. I enjoy playing my X360 and Ps3, but Sega and Nintendo are gaming gods in my opinion. I might not own a Wii cause i find it to girly, but Sega and Nintendo made the game industry what it is today. And if Nintendo and Sega come out with new consoles in 4-5 years. Its the Sony and Ms fanboys that need to worry cause the Kings of Gaming will rule the Industry once again just like the genesis and nintendo did back in the dayzzzzz......

New Dreamcast would be amazing. Hell it doesnt cost me anything to develop it so why would I be against it? As far as Apple is concerned, they need to think long and hard about the future they were discussing in the games market. I bought the most games in the shortest period of time for the dreamcast. The xbox was pretty much dreamcast 2. I look at my dreamcast right now, it says "designed with windows ce" on the front. Microsooft did what sony did when they were supposed to make the playstation as an add on for super NEs. they decided to make their own console. I always thought the xbox was a rip off of the dreamcast, but it was still a great succesor, and now I have a 360. I would buy a dreamcast 2 over a ps3, just to reverse how I bought a ps2 to replace my dreamcast(althought I still have the dreamcast not the ps2).

I would like this so much. My guess if this is true Sega would start getting third party members now. Then in like five years bring out the Dreamcast 2. I think it would come out around the same time the next PS,Xbox and Wii version comes out. I also would hope EA would makes games for Sega this time around. I may not be the biggest EA fan but having EA makes some games would help out a lot. Also I think Sega would make a Deamcast 2 in some ways like the Wii. This way it would be cheap to make and even if only a few sold they would still make a profit.

Man this would make this gamer really happy. Last time around Sega had online on the DC so now there online could be better plus they could have there own kind of download service that allows you to buy Genesis, CD, 32X, Saturn and even Dreamcast games. That would be awesome. I can't tell you how awesome this would be. Sega made some of the best games ever when they were first party but have made some bad games after that. But know that they would only need to make games for there systems they could make some really nice ones.

I just hope if the DC2 is real this time Sega finds a way to block pirates. That was a big reason the DC1 died out. So I hope the same would not happen again.

The original Dreamcast as is will come back out being listed as Dreamcast 2. Not to take on the current next gen consoles of Xbox 360 or PS3 but taking on the Wii. The dreamcast could even re release it's already outstanding games library and then release new titles that are rivals of Wii type games and w/a Wii type remote. The dreamcast graphics were even back then a bit better than todays Wii graphics so in actuality it would be a great buy. It could sell for 149.00 or less even 99.00 and it would still be a huge success and very profitable as that same tech has lowered considerably. Previous games could sell for a mere 19.99 and would sell a fortune and newer Wii style games could go for 29.99 to 39.99.

I still have my Dreamcast and about 40 games. My fav's were Resident Evil:Code Veronica and Soul Reaver.

I always assumed 360 is Dreamcast's successor , but that's just me.

after doing some research seems msoft never wanted to get in the hardware business at all just focus on software hence the windows ce os in the dreamcast. I can see msoft backing sega financially to do their next console with the dc name powered my msoft once again. I can see them taking pretty much the same architect of the 360 adding the new media format blu/hd and launching at a attractive 199 pricepoint in 5 years. now that would actually work

Although when the Dreamcast came out I bashed it due to my loyalty to Sony and especially Nintendo. But the Dreamcast had a pretty solid library of exclusives that no other system really had. Before Sega suffered from having good titles that you could find on other systems and the exclusives weren't that attractive. The Dreamcast was just amazing and short lived.

If people know better no matter and contrary to popular beliefs. Sega was and is a pioneer to all things gaming. They were the first to introduce us to 3-D fighting done perfectly. They introduced us to Simulation arcade cabinets for gaming, They original IPs are some of the greatest, They introduced up to 3-D gaming withing walls (Fighting Vipers), Whenever a VF game comes out it ups the ante on What the bar was set for polygons and details and last but not least thank sega for destroying what was once known as Virtual reality and simply entitling it 3-D.

Already be a dreamcast 2 had it not been for MS ruining everything. They came in and stole just enough market share to kill the dreamcast early. Unlike MS, sega makes good first party games that are fun. MS is crap. crap crap. crap crap crap. the crap that spawns from crap. Thanks to MS i have no need to own more than 1 system. I dont like nintendo, since im not in their target audience. I already have a gaming computer that spanks the 360, so i dont need one of those either... so i have a PS3. I enjoy sony's first party titles because they are quality and i fall into their target audience well. Long live the sega of old.

How can you tell me im wrong and then back your claim with MS and GC were the last straw? thats what i said! damnit people. Sony took the vast majority of hype away from sega when they promised supercomputer 60 million poly games, but the gamer media was all over the dreamcast because "its got no jaggies, games look better on it, more games, etc" so, sega would have survived, barely. Then MS immidiately hyped the hell out of their system, and people now had to choose between an almost 2 year old sega system, a shiny dvd playing ps2, a teletuby lunchbox(game cube) or the "hardcore american nerd" xbox. There just wast room after MS showed up willing to pour gagillions of monies into the xbox to kill sega and try to squeeze into the market.

I wouldn't mind it. Sega always had great arcade games I think it would be great to see them in the console race again. As long as they have support, what killed the dream cast was no support from EA, back then EA was a big deal, and since Saturn flopped it caused sega to spend money they really didn't have. So, ultimately Sega went into the console war in trouble. So, I realy would like to play Ponza dragoon again.

Nah, they lost too much money and their reputation was tarnished. They might try to make their software library available for emulators or soemthing but doubt if they want to try burning their hands again, especially with the current-gen war already underway.

It's bad enough that there are currently THREE systems to choose from.

(I normally don't acknowledge the wii as a system because it isn't for hardcore gamers, but since it does take up such a large portion of the market it counts for this argument.)

The bottom line is that SEGA would have to release a technilogically better system than the current options, at a cheaper price to even be in the race. Then comes the hurdle of getting a good line of games on your side.

SEGA doesn't have the cash to do it. Even if they did they would have to basically bump one of the current systems off. There's only so much market to share, and yet ANOTHER system this late in the game would be insane.

Give me a Sequel to toy commander, that game was immense!

Sega hasn't done anything but make crap-mediocre games ever since they left the console market. I don't know if they'd have the ability to make good enough software to enter the market again.

I was there on 9/9/99 for what was and still is the best hardware launch ever. But the months following sucked. Sales weren't great, and the system was basically dead in japan, and outside of RE CV and DOA2 there were no more big game announcements. It was pretty heartbreaking. If the Dreamcast flopped, then there's no chance in hell a new Dreamcast 2 would do better. Sega's first party software is not what it once was, and let's be honest, noone outside of the hardcore gives a rats ass about games like Virtua Fighter and Sega Rally. If you truly are a Sega fan then you know they're better off making software only, and brush crap like this off as wishful thinking.

Business-wise, it would be a HUGE risk. It would be cool, but I am not sure that the market can support four consoles. I think one would have to go, and it would most likely be Sega.

It could be nice to see them in the hardware game again. But this time guys, let's buy their console, and drop Sony. If we really want to see them again, we need to kill Sony. If not, once again developers will abandon it, and then titles will slow to a dribble and then it happens again. I would buy a DreamCast 2. And if I were a developer, I'd make games for it too. The PlayStation brand was strong enough to force its way past all rival consoles in each gen, N64 & Saturn in one, Gamecube Dreamcast and Xbox in the other. PSone alone gave DC a problem, and PS2 dealt the final blow, even without mention of a Gamecube or an Xbox. Sega could rise again, they just need US. If we want Sega, Sony has die.

Dreamcast's only real problem was that for how high powered it was, it was actually low budgeted. They launched it at 199, so its competiveness was compromised given the fact that they actually were in the low end of what could've been even though of as next gen back then. It was a great console but to put in perspective, what if this gen would've started out with a 360 that had the innards of a Wii. It would have not had a chance at taking on a PS3 that would have launched only a year later. MS actually did the opposite: they introduced a console at 399 and one at 299. In reviewing their strategy, I've concluded that they were basically correcting what Sega did wrong: most of us don't see it yet but the this generations consoles launched at significantly higher costs due to the fact that they needed to drive the competition to keep up. Manufacturers are trying to gain leads by playing a game of catchup. Nintendo not playing into it proves that it won't work as planned, but they don't want Wii to live past it expected life of 2-4yrs anyway.

Simply put, Sega shouldve luanched with a 299-399 console, thereby effectivly building a machine that WOULD'VE had a chance at taking on PS2, through virtue of not aging as quick.

and have Sega just keep making good games. I would love to see Dell make a console so we can all laugh at em!!

for some time there had been a rumor that the name for sega re-entry into the console market would be "phoenix". A fitting name if you think about it. I liked how the name "genesis" really was a new beginning for games with the 16bit era. Since then names for consoles have sort of lost their meaning. Except, maybe, for the Wii....?

That was a good console until it was bought out by Microsoft.
I think what happened is that Sega wanted to join Microsoft
and
Sega ended up developing the Xbox
while
Microsoft developed the programs
that's why MS is ahead when it comes to a network because of Sega's help.
The Sega Dreamcast was the 1st console of it's age to develop any type of online for a console.
Sega I lost faith in them
and
then I purchased a PS2
and
it's been Sony ever since and I'm happy to be a fan.
It won't be too long until Sony kills every console by 2008 for superiority
it's done Sony wins both the Console War
and
the Format War with Blu-Ray.

It does not make Financial sense....and Sega would not survive this Next-Gen war....I love the Dreamcast...One of my favorite old school consoles....of all time...besides..SNES...sega Gensis...and the master system...N64...............NES

--Sega cannot afford to enter..this gen war or even the next one.......What I think they are trying to keep the dreamcast name from being used by anyone else.

I don't think that they are making a Dreamcast 2. There simply isn't any room for it this gen. With the Xbox 360, the PS3, and the Wii, pretty much all the grounds are covered. The Dreamcast 2 would be just another console, with no true advantages. It won't have Xbox Live, won't have Bluray, and won't have the interactivity of the Wii. There would be very little reason to buy it, thus it wouldn't sell.

For those worried about funding, SEGA has merged with Sammy, and Sammy as you know has a huge fortune that they can invest in the dreamcast to help them prosper.

I for one hope that this becomes a reality and can guarentee that i will be buying one regardless of cost lol

I still love the system to this day. My black DC is in mint shape. The 8 year old hardware runs more stable to this day than a new 360. But do I think there will be a DC 2? Unlikely. Sega's rep as a console maker is stigma. It would be too much of a gamble to take for a company that could go bankrupt with another similar financial loss as the one they had with DC (which I doubt they have fully recovered from yet). If market conditions allow a new console when the current gen is ready to be replaced, Sega may get bold. Perhaps in the case of no clear winner in the console war, which is the general prediction. But, for Sega, I think it would be a mistake. I would definitely buy one, though.
