6 things Microsoft should do to win back core gamers

With Microsoft seemingly not catering enough towards its core audiences beyond multi-platform releases, what should Microsoft do to win them back?

It needs to offer more games, period. I agree with the sentiment that Microsoft are planning something big for next year as it simply has gotten too quiet for Xbox gamers.

MasFlowKiller5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

They just need one:

1) Make Core Games

Everything else is an extra, Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, youtube should only be extra not the main attraction

guitarded775273d ago

To make "core" games, they need to buy... and invest in studios and new IPs. MS needs more exclusives. They also need to make more adult IPs, Halo and Fable are good and all, but they feel like they are geared toward the teen market. I think the idea of "cloning" Heavy Rain is a bad one... MS has been open to innovation with indie devs, but cloning usually comes off as stale.

Prophet-Gamer5273d ago

They spent 500 million on ads for Kinect but they can't spend any money to buy some studios? I'm sure 500 million would let them either buy and or make maybe 5-6 studios that would develop exclusively. It's obvious MS doesn't care about the core anymore, they've become the new Nintendo.

Jobesy5273d ago

The only thing MS needs to do is make more money. That is the ultimate goal and so far they are succeeding very well. If hardcore gamer Timmy doesn't agree, who cares?

Some of you come off like you know what it's like to run a multi billion dollar business, and if it were put in your hand I have no doubt you'de run that business straight into the ground. MS is having one record year after the next, so why do they need to change anything? If you don't like what they offer then take your money somewhere else, simple.

Why o why5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

I never thought id see the day when gamers are saying they DONT want more core games. Imagine that. More games used to be all the rage...what happened guys...why the change of heart. There will always be great multiplatform games but is it such a crime to want more great exclusives from our console makers instead of relying on 3rd parties. Lmao

Bathyj5272d ago

@Jobesy

I'd rather act like a gamer who wants more games than act like a shareholder who actually has to stake in the company.

You say they only have to make money and if gamers dont like it who cares?

Well what if that stopped making games altogether and made billions manufacturing shoelaces because it was more profitable with less risk, would you still be rooting for them, or would you feel they had become irrelevant to you?

GAMES are what matter and gamers are WHO matter. I wouldnt give a damn how much a company was making as long as they made enough to stay in business and kept giving me what I wanted.

PS
I DONT like it and I DID take my money somewhere else.

"Microsoft are planning something big for next year"

Yeah...sure.....

Heard that line like 100 times

YodaCracker5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

It certainly has not been quiet for me or any of my Xbox LIVE friends. There have been so many games coming out on the 360 recently that I have simply not been able to keep up. Recently, I've been swapping back and forth between 5 games at once; Gears of War 3, Skyrim, Forza 4, Saints Row 3, and AC: Revelations.

Never have I been playing so many games at one time, but there are so many coming out, and so many in the last few months that I still haven't gotten to try, that I feel overwhelmed. This is probably the busiest time for Xbox 360 gamers in the console's history.

Ironically, the only people that I ever see complaining about the Xbox 360 lineup are PS3 fanboys. Actual 360 owners seem to be too busy playing the games that supposedly do not exist on their console.

Brosy5273d ago

I agree, there are plenty of games to play right now. Microsoft know what they are doing. I don't feel like Kinect has hurt my gaming in the least.

5273d ago
DigitalRaptor5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

You know what it is? Why people are saying all this and that PS3 owners are saying it?

@ DK286K
For years, 360 fanboys have been convincing people of things that weren't true about PS3 and its games.

The tables have clearly turned and Microsoft is not investing in new IPs or exclusive games for the core gamer so heavily as they were up until 2007. They are showing much more interest in upkeeping their Kinect investment than to provide new core experiences. I've heard the new studios they've opened (which should be a good thing) are for Kinect games.

PS3 fans would like to make that fact known. That is all really, but Microsoft should be offering more for what they're worth - fans like yourself seem to be happy though. Can't really say much more.

MrBeatdown5272d ago

@YodaCracker and DK286K

I love how rather than just accept the reality that MS's first-party line-up has been lacking in recent years, guys like you would rather shoot the messenger by calling them all PS3 fanboys.

I'm sure this will be completely ignored and you'll write me off as a PS3 fanboy too, but the fact is there are millions of people out there who buy more than one console, and want to get more out of their investment than just two places to play the same multiplatform games, especially when neither offers a distinct advantage over the other. Six years into the 360's lifespan, the 360 should be able to offer more core games than just Gears, Forza, and a Halo 1 remake.

5272d ago
MrBeatdown5272d ago (Edited 5272d ago )

@DK

Well, let's see... PS1 had Syphon Filter 2 and 3, Spyro 3, Legend of Dragoon, Medieval 2, and Crash Bash, among others in it's sixth and seventh years. For PS2, there was Socom: Combined Assault, Offroad Fury 3, Tourist Trophy, and God of War II, among others.

Nice try, though. It's pretty sad when you have to compare this generation, which has had a longer than usual lifecycle to previous generations in order to make an excuse for Microsoft. What's even sadder, is that in doing so, you help prove the opposite. Sony delivered a respectable line-up for the PS1 even during launch years for PS2, and they did the same for the PS2 during the launch years of PS3. Microsoft had a weak line-up, despite the fact that's the only console Microsoft has on the market. Microsoft has no excuses.

5272d ago
MrBeatdown5271d ago

@DK

You are making excuses. Feeble ones at that. You've decided to conveniently ignore the fact that Sony was supporting two consoles simultaneously, with the primary focus being on the newer consoles. Three if you include the PSP during the transition from PS2 to PS3. Microsoft is supporting only one.

And you're also ignoring the fact that this has been a longer than usual generation. A fact that every last person on this site, and everyone working in the game industry would tell you. You're comparing the two systems based purely on the length of time they've been on the market, but blatantly disregarding other factors.

These are facts I'm bringing up but with the way you choose to cherry pick them, it's as clear as ever that you're just a 360 apologist. Whether you want to dismiss the games I listed or not on the basis of how good you think they are doesn't change the fact that a respectable level of support was there.

ATi_Elite5273d ago

Gears 3 sold pretty dam well. close to 5 million so far. most multi-plats sale more on the 360 than the other choices!

people need to realize that EVERY thing MS does is to get people more prone to buying Windows.

MS is a software company who's business model is making cash from Licensing fees and the 360 is doing that very very very well with limited support from MS. The 360 is on automatic and MS loves that.

Now they could and should push forward some more system defining Exclusives like Halo and Gears but i think MS is saving that for the Next Box cause right now that makes perfect business sense.

MariaHelFutura5273d ago

They need to buy some studios and stop spending sooo much on advertising.

Persistantthug5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

For game development, Microsoft needs to stop being Creatively Bankrupt.

scrambles5272d ago

YES OF COURSE!! then sony will be the only ones left in the console industry. you'll be paying 80$ per game and then psn will probably start a fee to play online games 50-100$ a yr? sounds about right considering your only other option is the wii or a pc but hey the wii is for lil kids and pc gaming is for nerds so your stuck so far down a hole you cant even get yourself out of cuz u want videogames. enjoy your monopoly /rant

Persistantthug5272d ago

What in the HELL are you talking about?

Prophet-Gamer5273d ago

Microsoft would never take risks on games like HR and LBP. In fact, MS turned down MM when they were offered LBP.

ZippyZapper5272d ago

No need to win what they already own.

CGI-Quality5272d ago (Edited 5272d ago )

What have they won? Their 2nd in the US/UK and are in last place in nearly every other part of the world. They're successful, which is what matters, but they aren't leading in any territory.

OT: Microsoft actually doesn't lack in studios (although they're behind both Nintendo & Sony). They just need to get those guys to work. They know how to support a brand, but they're resting on their laurels, which could prove disastrous down the road.

kreate5272d ago (Edited 5272d ago )

I did not know the big M lost core gamers.
cuz from what people say, they just had record breaking sales this past november.

with sales like these. I doubt they need to 'win' core gamers back cuz I dont think they really left to begin with.

Microsoft were once the 'daddy' of consoles for exclusives - those tables have long since turned. We need better and refreshing gameplay experiences built into new IP's -- as put off as dev's may be by the sales of Alan Wake, it's a game that needs to be taken.

Games on Demand - frankly has turned into a joke, and now Sony is leading in this area, offering more recent releases via. digital download on their console, big and more recent releases like Battlefield 3 and Dead Island can be purchased digitally from PSN.

Emilio_Estevez5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

Ummm, Nintendo, Sega and Sony were doing exclusives before xbox existed. Can't be the "daddy".

Pintheshadows5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

Glad someone pointed that out. I'm loathed to admit but Nintendo is the daddy of exclusives.

@guitarded, i'm going by number of exclusives. Over the last 2 decades Nintendo has accrued a ridiculous amount.

guitarded775273d ago

That title belongs to Atari.

Sanetoshi5273d ago

As for the lowering prices bit, they should really take a page out of Steam's book and have huge sales. As it stands, Xbox Live can feel pretty pricey by comparison.

RedHotChiliPepaSpray5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

Instead of investing in Kinect, invest in buying studios to make exclusive games for you. also that has to be the worst picture for this article ... lol

Godmars2905273d ago

And I still say that MS needs to show that they properly manage manage in-house talent while their fanbase insist that they buy more.

honestly, how many times does it have to be pointed out that Bungie left them? What happened to Rare.

El_Barto5273d ago

They don't need to buy more, they just opened 4 new studios this year, bought Twisted Pixel and are hiring at Rare and Lionhead. They have plenty to work with for the next Xbox.

343 is made up of quite a lot of ex Bungie, so Halo is in good hands, Rare has done great things on the Xbox 360, only the ignorant haters think otherwise. Since when is 6 platinum games in 6 years a bad thing?

death2smoochie5273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

Actually MS owns abut 14 game studios. Sony about 16 give or take.

It's the misconception on this site especially.
Almost EVERYONE on N4G thinks MS only owns 1-2 game studios and Sony owns like 100.

The difference is Sony gives more freedom to those developers in making games that are more core oriented.
MS is focusing on Kinect games with the majority of their studios.

Here is the reality:

N4G.COM and sites like it DO NOT represent the majority of gamers. I know...I know...this is too hard for many of you to believe.
However the majority of console game buyers are CASUAL and average consumers. NOT HARDCORE/CORE USERS.

Sites like N4G.COM make you believe that exclusives games are the only thing that matter and bought the most when in fact 3rd party multi-platform games sell the most by sheer numbers alone and are more recognized by the majority of gamers with the exception of the Marios, Zeldas, Halos, Gears and GT franchise.

All other franchise exclusive games do not have the recognition as many multi-platform 3rd party games.
Those are the games bought by most gamers and defines a system TO those consumers...
If this were a flat out lie, then why has the PS3 not surpassed the Wii, Xbox360 in software and hardware sales by large margins then as it has as many on this site would like to think, the MOST exclusive games AND Exclusive games sell systems?

Yes I know..I know...Exclusives are everything on this site and because exclusives mean everything to you, no other games matter....

Yeah MS owns more than you would think given the state of their library recently. When talking about competing platforms Exclusives do matter immensely, without exclusives a platform is essentially redundant.

Does it really matter though? seems to me you have been in one too many fanboy battles here on N4G.

Godmars2905273d ago (Edited 5273d ago )

Its what they've produced in their time as a console game maker that's exactly the question. How despite being in the industry for ten years PC games longer than that, they've made few if any new IPs. Halo wasn't their's, the bear and Bird game wasn't their's. Flight sim and Mechwarrior wasn't their's originally, they only bought the properties.

They did do Viva Pinata, supported it with a two season TV series, but it never caught on. There is nothing to support the idea that they actually make games, only sell them. To a degree.

This is important, worth debating at least, because MS has been trying to set themselves up as the leader in the game industry. Not one of its leaders but a key source. This while they've shown no ability to "make" games in the key sense of the word.

Halo art director leaves studio after 17 years with ominous message alluding to discontent

Glenn Israel writes: "As of today and after seventeen long years, I am officially no longer contributing to the Halo universe. There is little more I can say for the moment, though I intend to share this particular story in its entirety when it is absolutely safe to do so next year. In the meantime, I have a message for anyone and everyone who needs to hear it.

I know that the state of our industry seems dire, but never forget that you are *free to choose*. No illusion of security nor promise of wealth or fame or power is worth trading away your health, your dignity, your ethics or values - and no one can force you to. Stay strong, take evidence when necessary, and find where you belong."

My god.
There's a story for next year.

VenomUK224d ago

I’m really disappointed to learn there are still people/morale problems. I thought the whole point of rebranding 343i to Halo Studios was to signal that real changes had been made - not to cynically rebrand to paper over the problems.

I really hope the Halo CE remake is great and gets people hyped for the future of the series.

DarXyde223d ago

It's inevitable with the modern landscape. Even if some issues have been assuaged, new ones crop up all the time.

I'm willing to bet AI and the lack of regulation is causing substantial upset.

shinXseijuro224d ago (Edited 224d ago )

He said something very marking . We tend to complain a lot about the industry but deep down I realize that we never have we been offered this crazy amount of games all available for you to play now . You can literally play any sorts of games in 2025 . Nobody is forcing you to buy the latest COD or the latest BF . You’re more of a 8 bit cozy gaming guy there’s a whole niche of modern games for that . You like micromanaging there’s games for that . I feel like we have been spoiled so much we just stopped being realistic and thinking for ourselves . We follow trends cry about stuff online when you are the buyer you have the power .

Notellin223d ago

I'm not buying any games until another Immersive sim is made.

PhillyDonJawn224d ago

....wth happened over there?
Does this confirm a new Halo by next year?
What did they want him to do that made him feel it was morally wrong or a insult to his integrity?

-Foxtrot224d ago

Well how about that, a name change doesn’t fix internal issues

Who would have thought

Halo 4 & Halo 5: Guardians Sales Reached Nearly 10 Million Units Worldwide

Lifetime sales of 343 Industries' first-person shooters, Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, reached nearly 10 million units worldwide each.

There were reports that Halo 4 and Halo 5 had similar sales to Halo: Reach years ago. The clickbait websites and rage bait YouTubers from 2012-2016 just wanted to spread excessive negativity about the franchise for their own benefit.

VenomUK313d ago

What did Halo: Infinite sell?

Sciurus_vulgaris313d ago

I don’t know. However, I would assume around 10 million. All the Halo FPS titles have done around 10 million sales, except ODST. Halo 3, was reported to exceed 14 million copies. I still remember back in 2007-2008, Halo 3 and COD 4 would duke it out for the most played XBL game.

MrNinosan313d ago

@Sciurus

There is NO WAY Infinite sold 10 million. Wake up dude.
Once upon a time, there was gamers on the Xbox side who actually bought games. Those times are since long gone.

Infinite has most likely not even hit 5 million sales

slate91313d ago

Nearly 10 million units and killing the brand is crazy work. Nicely done.

peppeaccardo313d ago

This New: Putting chocolate chips on top of a freshly made dog turd .....

1Victor313d ago

So let me get this straight in almost 13 years both games sold a combined 10 millions units.
Now I’m not going to use the obscured mentality and compared it to the amount of consoles sold and say it’s a failure 🤷🏿

thesoftware730313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

1Victor,

Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, reached nearly 10 million units worldwide "each."

Read it again, there is a word in there that clears up your misunderstanding.

1Victor313d ago

@thesoftware720
I apologize I skimmed through the article and the headline blinded me and stuck in my mind thank you for the correction 👍👍

AuraAbjure313d ago (Edited 313d ago )

Halo 4 is the best multiplayer ever! It’s even better than Titanfall 2. I admit Halo 4 got CoDified but there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other games sometimes and halo 4 did it sooooo well with that speed boost plus sword combo and SAW plus damage booth combo, holy guacamole 🥑

Some crucial improvements to halo 4 could’ve been to boost the power of the AA sentinel, and whenever matchmaking pits people against each other with an armor abilities turned off completely then the map needs to routinely spawn, plentiful, predictable, power weapons. Also, all frame rate drops are unacceptable for a halo game during split-split screen or couch co-op. Just dynamically scale the resolution of the game down but whatever happens don’t let the framer dip in a Halo game for the love of all that is holy and good!

My personal gameplay of getting 30 kills in a 4 v. 4 game of team slayer up to 60.

OG Destiny artist recalls Bungie’s “disgruntled” reaction to Halo 4’s art style change

Original Destiny artist Darren Bacon recalls how Bungie reacted to the art style change of Halo 4 by 343 Industries.

videogamer.com
Tacoboto395d ago

Bungie at that time became the most wonderful bunch of hypocrites in the gaming industry. Knowing this now, gosh the entitlement they felt was out of this world.

Nothing like buying yourself from Microsoft because you don't want to be the Halo Studio anymore, and the FIRST THING you do is sign your next IP over to Activision, for a DECADE, while they are in the middle of ousting the heads of Infinity Ward so they can exert even more control over COD while screwing out the devs at IW...

Should've come as no surprise then that Activision gutted the content of Destiny 1 before launch and was a horrible partner through Destiny 2, until history repeated itself and Bungie had to split from Activision only to wind up in the arms of another major conglomerate that also doesn't know how to handle these unmanageable devs.

Profchaos395d ago

Tti their credit they praised the technical abilities of 343 and I remember at the time thinking halo 4 was a huge graphical leap above reach everything else was rubbish when I actually got to play it but there was no doubt it looked good for the 360 and is probably the best looking game on the system.

But ultimately I think bungie has always had a leadership problem and going independent ultimately proved this it's only getting worse with studio heads being outed by Sony for abuse allegations seems like all bungies past success has been in spite of management not because of it.

But really I think the bungie we have today is not the same one we had in that Xbox era of Bungie

PhillyDonJawn395d ago

I liked the artstyle change. For the most part. Something looked worse but most of everything else looked better. Weapons and vehicles for sure. The wraith come to my mind instantly.
And how can they get mad when the bungie changed it with Halo Reach?

Sciurus_vulgaris395d ago

I know a lot of people dislike Halo 4’s arts style, but there’s thing about it I like and dislike. Personally, the Halo 4 design of Master Chief’s armour is my favourite depiction of the character’s armour.
