You make a great point.

Certified meaning that the it's meant to work well with the PS3 naturally, meaning that your probably gonna get options that comes with your standard Divx players in the PS3.

Microsoft just activated code that would let you use Divx, and just put it out there like raw meat to dogs.

But I recently got an update on my computer for DivX support. It stated that the update better utilizes multicore systems for DivX video, making the video quality 50% better than it would be on a single core system.

This has probably been in the works for awhile, so I expect DivX videos will run extremely well on the PS3. Better than on most PC's or on the Xbox, as it will make use of "da cell".

Next update I hope we get the 1.1 profile, DivX support, and please god an update to the flash player :-(.

But all those things together might eliminate the use of me ever having to use my computer :-D. Atleast on a daily basis.

While I'm sure it will benefit some people to store their divx/xvid files on the ps3's HDD, is this REALLY that much of a huge difference? All of my Divx files are on my PC. It's pretty easy to just hit the "power" button on the 360 or ps3 and stream from the network.

For me (personally), I see no need to be able to put the files on my gaming machines.

If developers or other things can use it, great! But who is to say that the 360 games couldn't use it as well? I mean, it will read from a DVD... just saying.

They add support for DivX, but it's by external means only.

The PS3 can. You just hit "copy" and the file copies to the HD.

The PS3 also streams at the moment, but uses transcoding to do so. When Divx arrives, the PS3 owners just have to hit "copy" to add the files to the 80/60/40/350 gig internal HDD.

And I find it highly convenient that my 360 can wirelessly interface with my computer, which is all the way across the house, and stream movies, music, and pictures from it without me having to string a huge long wire to the computer.

The PS3 can also connect wirelessly because of the free wifi. The best part about streaming to the ps3, is you can easily hit 1 button to COPY the movie,photos,mp3s to your HDD. So you can skip/rewind with ease. Or, setup slideshows. You can always stream the photos, but its alot easier to just setup a gallery. Same with the mp3's.

If one were so inclined, you can install a 350gig HD (internal & doesn't void any warranties) and keep all of your HD quality movies on there, right now i convert to a supported format. I am filling up my 60gig easily, so the 350 gig is next up on my list. When Divx comes, I plan to use my PS3 as my HTPC so all I have to do is copy the movies from my fileserver.

Tversity has the same features, for both systems.

To top it all off.. you can connect to the PS3 through the PSP and watch movies that way. At work, while the PS3 is at home.

maybe it is an issue for you to have to turn on your pc to stream content to the 360 but that is why it also lets you play the content from a disc. I just made a compilation of about 4 movies in divx format on a dvd and popped it into the 360 drive and watched 2 out of the 4 movies. All without having my PC on.

I know where you are trying to go but being able to copy the content from a source to the internal drive is a convenience. So is simply inserting a disc or plugging in a flash/hd drive. Streaming from the PC isnt so convenient but it is an option. I like having the disc myself because I can then take that same disc and play it on another 360 or PC or standalone divx certified dvd player as well.

storing the content to the internal drive....consider that an advantage if you want but to each his/her own.

edit: by my example I have just shown the 360 to be an A-B device instead of the A-C-B as you described. Plus, if you try to include the process by which I had to put the content on the disc as part of the process then you fail because you will need to do the same for the PS3. How are you going to get that content into your PS3 in the first place? Take it off a PC, ext medium (drive/CD/DVD) so you see my point that the PS3 is in the same picture as the 360. I will give it to the PS3 for having a browser to dl content but that is about it. All other divx content has to come from an "external" source.

Both work as far as I know. Stream is ok, but this will be much better. Time for me to get that 250GB SATA.

Perhaps the reason the 360 isnt certified is because it uses its own variation of wmp instead of using the real divx decoders. You have to remember that sony doesnt have a media player like wmp so it is in their best effort to use the third party (divx in this case) to be the full decoder/player for that content.

I know that I can play divx content on a pc using the divx player (which is a certified player..duhh) or wmp because it has patched codecs to playback divx media. Yet where do the patches come from......divx maybe??

Divx certifed is that divx will play any which way on the device, web, harddrive, streaming, ingame on the bluray, HOME, from a mac, from a PC, from linux...the PS3 will be truly Divx certified! We are talking 5.1 sound too...

And with BD profile 1.1 and full divx certification the PS3 will be the ultimate media device...

I dont think certified means playing the content from all sorts of sources. I think it simply means to be able to play the content using THEIR software/codecs instead of third party.

You have to think that there are "certified" dvd players in the stores and all they have to play the content is a dvd drive so your idea of certified may be off.

Why not just go ask Divx what it takes to pass certification? If it comes down to using their software decoders and the 360 is using them instead of patched wmp decoders then wouldn't that make the 360 certified as well? Just hypothetical.

No one wants a media device. What people want is a gaming console. Maybe when Sony finally figures that out, they'll sell a more consoles.

Anyways, who the hell cares? I use my 360 for gaming,and thus that's what my harddrive should be reserve for. GAMING!!! If I want to save movies, I'll save it on my own external drive or my laptop. Don't really need my console to do that. All it will do is waste space that should be reserved for downloadable content and games.

and if you do, have you tried it yet? It's not flawless by any means. I run a hard wired connection to it and it still breaks up every once in awhile, processing the stream.

But you can still stream which is what most people do. Instead of going through your storage to find the mp3 you want to play.

Theres easy menus on 360 which allows you to quickly stream files of your PC and if you want you can listen VIA the headset. (lol, unless you bought the wireless hi quality ones. The standard headsets are crap quality)

BTW, to those who were screaming about Youtube support. Just how many times have you even used the browser on the PS3. I mean, I hardly use it on my Wii let alone PS3.

I know that almost every PS2 or Xbox Owner has a external DVD player in their house but PS2 and Xbox supports it but nobody really uses it.

That I am not a 100% video game holic. I like to do OTHER things, like watch movies or play music etc.. on my console. So, please forgive me.. as I watch 300 on my Ps3. (gets popcorn)

haha eamon.. ok.. you want me brag.. ok. So the ps3 is connected to my 5.1 Surround Sound, as is the cable box. I only have 2 optical ports, so I chose these 2 (yes I know media center can do the tv thing, but why turn your computer on just to watch tv???) Ok, so every dvd I watch, every bluray I watch, is watched through my Ps3. (I also used my ps2 as my dvd player back in the day, although it wasnt the best). I have a 500 GB external HDD, I have over 100 movies ripped and encoded on the hard drive, about 40+ of my actual DVD's and more than 60 that I have rented. 6 GB of music (again, ps3 connected to surround sound), and my photo albums. Also as I do vacation every now and then as well as family outing, I pop in my sony digital cameras memory card into the ps3 and download it into my ps3, and to my external hdd for backup. Again, why turn the computer on when you don't have to. Oh and another thing, I can also use my pc as a media center, you know, because the ps3 also has that functinoality, also my itunes on the pc has all of my music (as well as backed up on the external hdd, get a data cd from a friend of mp3, load it into itunes, then copy the ones I want via media sharing into the ps3's hard drive, easy peasy. I agree, if you don't use it, don't talk about it, but I use it daily, which means the ps3 is the best purchase I have ever made.

If you have DivX PLAYER installed, then you can play the content.

so u have to download a divx player to the ps3 first in order watch divx content? do u just go divx.com with the ps3 browser or is there gonna be a download option in the xmb?

Seriously, I have never once thought of storing divx/xvid videos on my 360 and I HAVE AN ELITE meaning I have enough space to store.

I always wanted to just quickly transfer it to my flash disk and play it off there or just stream it via Windows Media Player 11.

You DON'T have the option to do so!

- You have never thought about FREE access to multi-player online, because you never got an option to do so.
- You have never thought about playing content off of your HDD, because you don't have the option of doing so.

It's true of all "bots" they only conquer to what options they have.

I find it odd that you wouldn't want to store data on your HDD for easier access, or to play back the content at a later time. But I guess thats asking for too much.

Why do we even have HDDs on PCs, why not carry everything on Flash cards etc.. ?

I actually prefer the streaming too. Just because I don't want to clutter my game system with duplicates of files already on my PC.

HOWEVER,

The 360 needs to improve the way it streams, or processes the files, or SOMETHING; because I have been streaming my stuff off it a couple of times since the update and I occasionally get distorted music and/or picture due to the lag in the processing. I used a wired connection and everything, so signal strength isn't an issue. It's merely the 360 trying to use it's codec to process the video.
