Is single player gaming doomed

With rising costs for next gen development, will we see fewer single player games from smaller developers, will studios take less risks, will we be left with just sequels?

Things aren't looking too good.

"Things aren't looking too good"

Well things do look good. Single player games do sell and most single player games have multiplayer built into it. It is up to the developer to decide if this single player game is still good. A lot of the time there is still a main focus on single player (UC, AC to name a few). Only in the modern warfare FPS genre has single player quality decreased because of multiplayer and out of those who sell really well is two. Single player games will still continue to have importance in the market. Skyrim, Batman they are single player games and look how many they sold. It only seems to be one specific genre (FPS) where single player games suffer. Its a bit like saying FPS are selling well so there is not going to be other games other than FPS. This is wrong because only two FPS games really sell well (over flooding the market) the rest do not.

Skyrim sold well and its single player. Thats a great example

Arent looking good for what? People play a much more vast amount of SP games than MP games mainly because there are more good SP gaming experiences than MP .....when it comes to MP only a handful of franchises maybe 10 or so really get played.

If you look at just the few games being tossed around for GOTY....most of those games made the list because of thier SP campaigns

Saladfax5280d ago

People also tend to focus on individual multiplayer games at any given moment. I mean, how much time can one spend playing? Does a person play BF3, MW3, SC2, League of Legends, and World of Warcraft with regularity?

No, of course not. Most people stick to a couple over a period of weeks/months. How many different single player games can a person play in the same span?

IDK what your talking about:

Uncharted 3
Resistance 3
Skyrim <---- All Single Player
Dark Souls
Batman
Zelda
Portal 2
Assassin Creed
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

there's a lot more and all these titles have sold extremely well, with the exception of maybe Resistance 3 not doing as many would hope (awesome single player though).

Some of those games I've listed have MP to them, but really what got people into the series?
Uncharted didn't always have MP nor did Portal and Assassin Creed. They have always been about the SP mode and MP comes second. Only reason I included Dark Souls as a SP game cause your chances of playing with someone in that game are pretty low considering how they made the matchmaking.

I will admit though that the article does say this in the intro:
" will we be left with just sequels?"

All the games I listed are pretty much sequels, but we do have some games that aren't and that we can look forward to.

Sony released tons of new IP's this gen and the fact that we are either half way or near the end of this gen means that we won't be seeing as many new IP's as one would hope. While we still are getting new games and new IP's, It's usually around the first few years of a console that we see them more often. After that they usually focus on sequels and from time to time introduce new games.

I hope not, because I play single player games only and will..

Actually I think single player is on it's way back! Let's be honest the last 3 - 4 years have all been about multiplayer but I think it's starting to wear thin!
I'll put it this way what are the best games this year?- skyrim, uncharted 3, lbp2, portal 2 , batman arkham city! Ok a few of these have multiplayer but the main mode in all of these is single player!

Bigpappy5280d ago

Ever heard of Skyrim, Batman and Zelda?

Good multi-player game should usually sell more copies than single player, but Good SP has a huge audiances also.

ShadesMoolah5280d ago

a number of single player franchises have made the shift to include multiplayer. big rpgs like skyrim are the exception. Although who knows if the next game will include a multiplayer element.

xtremexx5280d ago

nope, im actually looking for single player only games, mp is fun and all but single player is what i enjoy because your their to enjoy it and not level up.

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast532d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman532d ago
