Official: The games kids MUST avoid

National Institute on Media and the Family 'unveils' the world's most deadly games...

Though it's probably a little too late for the Christmas spending frenzy that's already in full swing.

The list has been designed to help parents decide what games are appropriate for their children, just in case they can't see the massive 'M For Mature' rating on the box.

"There's an endless stream of new games that will never be suitable for children," said Rep. Betty McCollum. That's because adults like games too.

"At a time of year when parents are looking for helpful guidance about video games, this year's report card does little more than sow unwarranted doubt about effective tools like ESRB ratings," said ESRB president Patricia Vance."

lol
ESRB is a joke, the system obviously doesn't work as intended.
A lot of parents don't know the meaning of the word responsibility.
Instead of working together, ESRB is criticizing the NIMF.

Pothead216747d ago

The majority of parents believe that the ESRB is helpful in deciding what games their kids play. The most that any organization should be doing as far as censorship goes is to inform the parents, and that is what they are doing.

The only thing more they could do to stop kids from playing inappropriate games, and that's what it is they don't want to inform they want to control, is to stop selling them. If an adult wants to purchase a game for their kids, the government has no right to stop that. It's the parents decisions that raise the child, not the governments.

(I know that the ESRB is a private organization not controlled by the government, but when they "fail to rate games properly" it's the government that steps in to try to sh!t(my god you can't swear here...) all over the constitution)

TrenchaunT6747d ago

ESRB is a joke. I don't think it's an effective way to rate games at all.

But anyway, for those who said they played violent games as a kid and didn't go on a rampage, that's not the point. Only an idiot thinks violent games are going to make kids into murderers. There is still something to be said for letting kids mature intellectually and emotionally before they are exposed to excessive violence.

I def. think Mass Effect should be on that list, though, because of its sexual content. I guess the only real way for parents to determine whether a game is acceptable by their own standards is to research or play the game themselves.

what if parents wanted to buy porn for their kids. shouldn't the government be able to stop that? "it's the parents decision to raise their children"...

MK_Red6747d ago (Edited 6747d ago )

A much better and up to date list. The previous one was really prehistoric and showed how ignorant these so called caring groups are.
Funny how they forgot to put BioShock yet used COD4 which is really not that violent and anti social.

lol, this list is mostly consisted of my fave 2007 games.

HeartlesskizZ6747d ago (Edited 6747d ago )

war games are violent because is what war really is...
and yes I agree that Bioshock need it to be there.

Fact: parents need to look at VG Ratings before clamming a game is to violent for their kids.

BTW..who would bother by getting Clive Barker's Jericho game when the demo is really bad.... and about AC being on the list...I dont recall seeing blood in the game...just alot of stabbing =)

MK_Red6747d ago

True. Agreed on war games, BioShock, parents and Jericho even though I don't hate it much (But it's a rather weak and heavily flawed game).

As for AC, I do agree that it doesn't seem much violent but I believe the sword counter kills are kinda bloody and in general, this is just a list of popular games and those "caring" group didn't put much time and effort in making it.

Black Rose6747d ago

I agree also with you MK on this list being my favorite list except is missing ME and UDF

Zhuk6747d ago

nothing wrong with any of these games, kids have to grow up sometime

MK_Red6747d ago

I'm with Zhuk here. I've been playing Mortal Kombat as a small child and later, upgraded to Doom 1 on PC. Always loved M rated and violent games but haven't gone a killing rampage and such.

Pothead216747d ago

I hate to play devil's advocate but back in the day games were not as violent as they are today nor a gruesomely detailed. It's kinda hard to compare the original Mortal Kombat to Manhunt

MK_Red6747d ago

You've got a point :)
But still, MK was beyond realisticly violent back in it's time and overall, I don't believe all of these violent games are the real reason behind most of crimes.
Sure, games like Manhunt are rather dangerous but what about Assassin's Creed and COD4? AC is a historical / sci-fi action adventure with not much blood and gore. COD4 is a war game with low blood & gore and in it and neither promote violence and nastiness like Manhunt or GTA.

Niclas6747d ago

always funny 2 see these retards trying to help out parents .. haha yea -.- cuz you have 2 be a bit retardet to not se the big "M" .. ofmg .. Agree with Zhuk.. these ppl need 2 stfu .. all the greatest games r violent .. (Not cause im a lun ;P dont worry ppl) .. i just dont get 2 the egde of my set playing Mario

Poisen6747d ago

The only 2 titles deserved of a ban are Manhunt 2 and Jericho. Assasins Creed and COD4 should definitely not be included on the list.
Why not include Mario Galaxy onto the list!? Exactly.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg33d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree33d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai32d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
