A World Without Nintendo

GameCentral: There's been some interesting speculation this week in the Inbox, about what would happen if Nintendo ever decided to give up making consoles - or even ceased to exist entirely. Not that either outcome is at all likely but it has not been a good year for the house of Mario.
Despite barely a negative word being spoken about it before its release the 3DS suffered from a launch beset by bad press and unimpressive (but by means disastrous) sales. Although by industry standards the launch line-up of games was above average it lacked anything close to a killer app and suddenly what seemed like a sure fire hit became a costly white elephant.

it would be a sad and serious world, with less colors in games and innovation

m-s-8-25327d ago

Not true. Nintendo didn't make people who designed their games, the people who designed the games made Nintendo the company it is today. I can almost guarantee that someone like Shigeru Miyamoto (dont care if i spelled it properly) would still be doing what he is today with or without Nintendo.

PirateThom5327d ago

This article doesn't really go into depth of a "world without Nintendo" as much as tries to justify why there's been such a bad reception to the 3DS and Wii U.

Honestly, if Nintendo bowed out now, it would be the same as a world without Atari or Sega, life goes on and games get made.

Nintendo have history, but so did Atari. One company doesn't preserve the industry any more.

MasterCornholio5327d ago

If Nintendo left the console business they will probably continue developing games on other platforms so we wouldn't be missing out in their franchises.

If they keep going the way they are, they aren't going to have any choice but to stop making consoles. If the Wii U flops - and it likely will - they're history.

yabhero5327d ago

Why in the would WiiU flop it has eveything, better graphics Steam for online and innovative cntroller and third parties

AWBrawler5327d ago

I'm sure they made more than enough money to stay afloat if WiiU flops. They survived after the Gamecube and N64. Did people forget Nintendo pulled more money last gen than even PS2? They have Portables too people

ConstipatedGorilla5327d ago (Edited 5327d ago )

That must be why their investors are nervous and nintendo's shares are way down then. Good thinking.

Furthermore, who wants to buy a console where half of the price is attributed to some gimmicky tablet controller that will need to be replaced everytime some 8 year old drops it or spills apple juice on it. That thing is going to be a hell of a lot more expensive than a $20 remote.

@constipated
Investors are unhappy because Nintendo isn't making iphone games. That's it.
Any moron who actually knows anything about games understands that Nintendo making iphone games wouldn't help, and would actually damage the company's image and hurt income overall in the long run, but most investers don't care. They can only see the mad bank these mobile game makers pull in, and expect the same would happen for Nintendo.

@Gorilla

Just like whenthey drop or spill applejuice on their DSi right? That sure stoppe dthat from selling priced at over +100 huh /sarcasm

seriously Nintendo makes the most child proof products out of all the big 3 because they realize they have lots of young fans. that thing won't break easy. I accidentally drop kicked my wii into my closet while it was plugged up (slipped on batteries) cords came out and all, but it still works.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS100d ago (Edited 100d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure124d ago (Edited 124d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer126d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot125d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno125d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay125d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno124d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK124d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
