How Activision Killed The Gaming Industry (And Totally Saved It)

GP: "Activision is known for three things. Call of Duty, making impossibly large sums of money, and being generally hated for everything they do. But without Activision, where would we be as a gaming community? The true answer is actually quite surprising. You see, there was a time in the history of gaming when Activision didn't exist, and the mere act of the company's creation caused industry changing shock waves throughout the gaming world. Lawsuits were filed, companies died, and gaming as a whole fell apart shortly after.

But if it wasn't for the chaotic birth of Activision, then gaming as we know it may have never existed. Intrigued by my wild claims? Wondering how Activision could kill the industry while also save it at the same time? Well wonder no more! This story is about to begin!"

you can't leave out Pitfall. I associate Pitfall more with Activision than I do CoD.

DaveMan5152d ago

To me Activision is like a parasite that's good for you.

It's bad because Activision loves to milk the shit out of cod, and rarely wants to aquire new studios, and make new ips and take risks due to fear of losing money.

At the same time, because of COD, gamers have become more accepted. Plus it's helped the industry a ton.

Mustang300C20125152d ago

You can't milk somthing when the willing is able. Sorry but when you sale 9 million in one month that is not milking. That is givng the people what they want. In one continent at that.

gamingdroid5152d ago

True!

... people line up for MW3. It's a freaken crazy event.

Speaking of events, CoD now even has it's own "event" called "Call of Duty XP".

rdgneoz35152d ago

"You can't milk somthing when the willing is able. Sorry but when you sale 9 million in one month that is not milking." First off, please for the love of god, fix the grammar... I felt like punching your English teacher after reading that for the first time.

2nd, the reason why different companies milk certain IPs is because people willingly purchase new iterations, even if its basically the same as the last version (with a few minor changes and additions).

STK0265152d ago

To be fair, Activision has created/acquired new studios over the last few years, although they're pretty much all Co-D related. Beachhead studios and Sledgehammer games come to mind.

As for new IPs, they tried a few times, but never really backed them, Singularity was a decent game, but a lack of marketing pretty much doomed the game; although it's unlikely it would have sold as well as CoD since the game had its issues. Blur is another new IP, it got plenty of publicity, but the game failed to live up to expectations.

When you think about it, Activision's success is due to the fact they only want to make games that sell well; and they do so by focusing on a few select IPs. They won't create new major IPs until CoD/SC/Wc/Diablo stop selling so much.

Pikajew5152d ago (Edited 5152d ago )

Every big third party company milks their games. EA milks their sport games and makes people play their games on origin. Ubisoft milks Assasins Creed and all those motion control games. Capcom makes so much DLC and and they will release the game same with a few new characters a few months later.

*How Activision Killed The Gaming Industry (And Totally Saved It)And is currently killing it again.

There i said it.

Hicken5152d ago

I was gonna say something along the lines of "How Activision Saved the Gaming Industry (And Totally Killed It)" but yours works, too.

People above want to say that they helped making gamers and gaming more accepted, popular, or mainstream. But all that really refers to the perception of Call of Duty alone. The vast majority of people who have come into gaming through Call of Duty haven't moved much further beyond Call of Duty, and that's definitely not SAVING the industry.

Micro_Sony5152d ago

Cry me a river and get off the hate everything that is mainstream a popular.

Call of Duty is fun and me and my family have a blast playing it. If you want a real tactical shooter go join the US Army.

BuffMordecai5152d ago (Edited 5152d ago )

You should go buy some Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy, and watch Twilight along with your COD, since you like things that are both popular and mediocre at the same time.

Microsoft needs to listen or risk irreparable harm to Call of Duty

Windows Central: "The money may keep rolling in, but Microsoft is the custodian of one of the biggest selling video game series in history. If something doesn't change, I fear we'll reach a breaking point and irreparable damage will have been done."

Because ms is so good at managing studios, surely they will get it right

:P

franwex51d ago

In my view, they should probably merge MP with Warzone and essentially make it free to play like Halo Infinite. The campaign/zombies mode can be $30 yearly DLC. I know this would be insanity as most COD players essentially pay the full price of the game simply for the MP. However-with a shrinking player base they may have to consider it. Making it free would bring in a ton of players.

Profchaos51d ago

To late MW3 should have been a lesson but here we are two years later with a steaming pile a shite called blops7

Nothing lasts forever, eventually something will come along to make people forget about COD

Halo killer once arrived and technically call of duty killer also arrived, its name is Fortnite

dveio51d ago

Call of Duty was riding the revenue horse and charts for ~20 years. Whether undeserved or deserved.

But I endorse everyone to remind you that Microsoft could have decided differently when they took it over.

The money was certainly there, and they could have taken their time revamping the franchise:

Current-gen tech, manageable microtransactions, not imitating Fortnite and returning to core values of the franchise's origin.

They didn't.

Let's see next year. Hopefully without the then 13 years old PS4 and One hardware.

blacktiger51d ago

you need to stop saying "let see next year"

While i appreciate the gesture.... all of these retro classics have been made available everywhere else. I am hoping to see some other Activision properties make their way out of the shackles of the 5th, 6th and 7th gen. Licensing be damned... bring back the Transformers Cybertron games.

P_Bomb240d ago

Love the Cybertron games! TF games have been shit lately. Would love to see that era revisited. I even did the multiplayer!

MrBaskerville239d ago

Is the retro classics for all consoles?

Obscure_Observer240d ago

Deathdeliverer240d ago

It’s a HELL of a game. If you like JRPGs in the family of Persona, you will be in heaven… that is until you hear the various battle music…. then you’ll be somewhere BEYOND heaven!

Just finished Clair Obscur. This should be fun.
