Game developers Rare have been in the news quite a bit lately and I always click to see what they have to say, after all I grew up playing Rare made games on Nintendo platforms back in the day. When the original Xbox was out and Microsoft started acquiring studios I never thought they would purchase one of my all time favorite studios, yet in 2002 that is exactly what happened. Not only did Microsoft pay $375 million for the company itself, they also acquired the rights to all of Rare’s original intellectual properties. I was very excited to see what Rare could do with backing from Microsoft, to date I have not been disappointed, but there seems to be a backlog of anger from Nintendo fans or just non Microsoft fans that try to demean what Rare has done thus far at Microsoft.

Godspeed for the rest of your journey, sir. Loved BK. I think I'll play it this weekend to show my appreciation for this classic.

Louise O’Connor, a 25-year Rare veteran, has been made Xbox Game Studios’ Chief of Staff.
Not to offend anyone. But what was Rare doing with Everwild for so many years? Development began in 2014, with a reveal in 2019. From 2019 onwards nothing was about the game.
"Notably, O’Connor’s boss of 13 years, former Rare studio head Craig Duncan, was appointed head of Xbox Game Studios last year."
Hiring internal talent from Rare worked out so well last time.

2025 marks the 40th ‘Ruby’ Anniversary of that bold endeavour, and Rare’s inviting everyone to join the celebration of this impressive milestone, offering free gifts, discounts and plenty of swag to claim in their shared-world pirate adventure, Sea of Thieves.
It's a shame it seems pretty Sea of Thieves centric
I was hoping for some cool Banjo / Conker merch or maybe a re-release of Rare Relay with some added games, possibly work something out with Nintendo so they can add Goldeneye to it with online support.

It's not just them even MS fans are disappointed too. I think it's because they use to make games for the hardcore and now MS have them making Kinect games, not saying the kinect games they make are bad but a lot of people think it's a waste of talent especially when they have a few RARE IP's to work with.
Also like the article says few if any of the original staff are still with them.
I did like Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, those are the types of games I think they should be making...or a Killer Instinct I'd go re-buy a 360 if they made an epic KI game.
This is just my opinion though, but I have seen comments that say pretty much the same thing.
Because they used to be an amaing games developer in the old days and latley they've been Microsofts b*tch and produced shovelware crap. I mean ok...fair enough it's not their fault they canceled the Conker sequel, the Kameo sequel and the Perfect Dark sequel but still, you would think that because gamers want these games they would give the rights to Nintendo or Sony, I mean MS owns Rare but I don't know if it means they own the games rights which wern't even produced for their system like Conker and Perfect Dark.
I would love to think of what Rare would be like if they were bought by Sony....Sony is pretty open to new ideas and at least gives developers a chance with new projects.
