The 5 best console launch games ever

CVG: We've all heard the rumours and reports of the next-generation consoles hitting sometime within the next few years.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can try to wow us by telling us their new consoles will be able to make us waffles, wipe our arses and whatever fix the o-zone layer but what want to hear about is games. Titles that make us want to run out and buy the console with utter disregard for our financial standing. Experiences that offer genuinely something fresh that we can't find on our current platforms.

Over the years there have been a fair few games that have done this well, here's our list of a few launch games that did just that. Let us know your personal favourite launch games in the comments below.

I remeber being blown away by mario 64 the first time ive played it.

Intentions5282d ago

Super Mario 64 - N64
Halo Combat Evolved - Xbox
TimeSplitters - PS2
Tetris - Game Boy
Super Mario Bros. - NES

----------------------------- ------------------------------- -

Can't argue with that.

Solidus187-SCMilk5282d ago

I agree. I had all of these games and they were all great.

You could also put Super mario world and Soul calibur on there too if you wanted to make the list longer.

RXL5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

^basically...

altho i never got sucked into the timesplitters craze..i can't deny it's popularity and impact...

SimpleSlave5282d ago

I will add:

Sega Saturn:
Panzer Dragoon - although it was a Rail shooter, it shows what 3D was all about, plus the art style and maniac pace makes it still an excellent game.

Sega Dreamcast:
Soulcalibur - The first game, that i remember, that makes the arcade version looks old. Add the smooth as butter control, bunch of un-lockable and you still have one of the best fighting games even made.

Sega Genesis:
Golden Axe or Ghouls'n Ghost - Tight controls, difficult to learn but damn fun to master. Machines don't lunch with this types of games anymore either. It's almost like lunching with Demon Souls and Dark Souls together, back in the day it was at least.

Super Nintendo
Super Mario World (better than Mario 64 imho) - Seriously this game was crack when it was release, addictive, bunch of secrets, tight controls, and Yoshi...Run Yoshi, RUUUN!!!

Xbox 360:
Condemned: Criminal Origins -underrated as hell and one of the best horror games out there still. If you are asking yourself why the first person genre have not really advanced that much or why there is a lack of innovation now a day or why Resident Evil is no longer horror...well that cuz nobody bought this game. Yeah I said it.

Cheers

Panzer Dragon and StreetFighter Alpha my favorite Saturn games.

Solidus187-SCMilk5282d ago

I had all these games on the list but I was also thinking of super mario world and Soul Calibur when I read this.

I also really liked condemened criminal origins too. I thought it was much better than the second one. I didnt get a 360 at launch so I didnt know it was a launch game, but it was one of the best early 360 games that I played once I got one.

Still have my Silent Hill 1 copy

P_Bomb303d ago

So do I! It goes for a nice sum these days, but I ain’t sellin’!

Puty303d ago

Can we have SH1 on PS Store?

SimpleSlave303d ago

It's crazy to think that GOG will have Silent Hill 1/2/4, Dino Crisis 2, and Resident Evil 2/3 before the PSN. What the actual fudge is Sony even doing over there?

FinalFantasyFanatic302d ago

I will probably pick up Silent Hill 1 right away if GOG gets it, I grabbed BOF4 as soon as it was released, haven't picked up Dino Crisis yet since I already bought it on PS.

Dear God it's been 4 years since infinite and no official update on anything lol.

Tacoboto344d ago

No official update on anything?

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

GamerRN344d ago

I think remaking Halo Combat Evolved, and going to 2 and 3 again, will help give the studio an idea of how to make a Halo game feel like Halo again

Tacoboto343d ago

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

InUrFoxHole343d ago

Gotta agree. Infinite felt like halo.

Profchaos344d ago

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

RaidenBlack344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

They coulda started with Halo 3 remake ... I know Halo CE remaster was not proper with the art style but still, remaking after a remaster seems dull, when Halo 3 and Reach have started to show some age.

PhillyDonJawn344d ago

Yeah I hate they used Halo reach artstyle. Hope this remake feel authentic yet fresh

--Onilink--344d ago

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

Profchaos344d ago

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

darthv72344d ago

This will likely come to PS5 at the same time. 25 years of XB.... shared with PS.

Obscure_Observer344d ago

It´s gonna be among best sellers on PS Store next year regardless.

raWfodog343d ago (Edited 343d ago )

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.
