Gamestop’s Usefulness

Cameron C of VideoGameOlogists.com writes:

"So, I think it’s kind of an understatement to say that Gamestop gets a lot of hate. Usually for legitimate reasons, some of which are less legitimate then others. But has anyone stopped to think what it would be like if Gamestop actually went out of business and wasn’t here anymore? It may not happen soon, or at all, but I personally hope it doesn’t."

Gamestop is a garbage chain with NOTHING useful about it. The in-out thing doesn't happen because while you're checking out they're throwing a bunch of garbage advertising and stupid questions at you. I have a horror stories myself of them trying to trick me into garbage and being total asses for stuff they did to my that was supposedly "new." (Damaged LE boxes that cost me $150 each!!!) I hate the place, Play 'n' Trade and Mom & Pop stores FTW please! Stay away from Gamestop, crappiest chain out there for nearly anything. (Especially don't trade in your games, why would you spend $60 then take $30 for it a month later? Keep it. And then anything older than a few months you'll get like $5 for and they'll mark it to $45. I know they have to make money, but $5 is robbery!)

LOGICWINS5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

WOW...why are people on the Internet so damn negative about everything lol? Yeah, I've been to Gamestop and this lady asked me if I wanted to pre-order 5 different games one time.

But like I said, thats only happened ONCE to me. Your forgetting that they do have great deals during certain points in the year such as God of War 3 for $15 and the 50% off all Move accessories in September.

Also, do you know how easy it is to buy a used game, beat it in a week, return it, and get your money back?

"I like my local Gamestop because of the employees, but as a company, they rob the consumer without question."

YUP, the people in my GS are very helpful to parents who don't know what they're doing. The company is the main problem...not the employees. I don't agree with a lot of the trade in values...but like I said, good deals do come every once and a while.

I bet once Best Buy starts to gain ground in the used game business, GS I'll probably do something to counter it.

3GenGames5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

WOW...why are people on the Internet so damn positive about everything lol? I mean really, big corporation that has crappy condition used products, bad trade in rates, bad service, advertising the whole time your checking out, and much more like bad used prices at that. Seriously, they're crap all the way around, they not better than ANY store in ANY way except they a tool for companies to give them special codes to preorder. Just because you haven't had 2 bad experiences with the service doesn't mean it's good, they're still an absolute garbage corporation, no matter what your very bad opinion on it is.

Only the lowest businesses sabotage a game package and shove it on the publisher about having coupons to another service. What a crappy move by a crappy business. (Deus Ex)

SnakeCQC5282d ago

i remember friends telling me that fan boy staff members tried to dissuade them from buying a ps3 and told them crazy stuff in order for them to get the 360

Panthers5282d ago

When the PS3 first released, the Gamestop in my area was persuading everyone to go for the 360 instead.

LOGICWINS5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

@Erudito87 @Panthers

I bought my PS3 at CircuitCity(When it was still a brick and mortar store) and the lady tried to persuade me to get a 360 as well. The B.S that we experienced had nothing to do with the company...it was simply just frustrated employees that were jealous that people had the ability to spend $600 on a gaming console.

THATS the reason employees were trying to persuade people to get the 360. Because they wanted to justify that they made the right choice in buying a 360...that has NOTHING to do with Gamestop as a company.

Think about what your saying. Why would Gamestop stop themselves from making a profit on selling PS3s by purposely telling employees to dissuade consumers from buying a PS3?

Your not making any sense lol. Why would the "greedy evil" Gamestop want to STOP consumers from buying something???

xPhearR3dx5282d ago

@Panthers

Well duh, the PS3 launched at $600 and hardly had any good games at the time. I'm not defending Gamestop, but as greedy as you guys make them out to be, why would they convince a customer to buy a cheaper console with more games out for it at the time.

LOGICWINS5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

"...but as greedy as you guys make them out to be, why would they convince a customer to buy a cheaper console with more games out for it at the time."

A man of logic! In 2006, the 360 was an easier sell than the PS3 due to the cheaper price and the bigger game library. Therefore...why the hell would Gamestop want to stop consumers from buying a PS3, a harder sell?

If fanboy employees give you their PERSONAL recommendation to get a 360...how is that Gamestop's fault? Just ignore them and keep going your way.

I'm not defending GS, I'm just infusing logic into this argument.

fear885282d ago

People get annoyed far too easily. I shop at gamestop for used games that have been missed out on. I almost never will buy a new game and never from gamestop. I go in, they give me their "hey check out these cool games and preorder" sales pitches, rightfully ignore, strike up a conversation with the clerks about the going ons in the industry (some of the clerks are in the know at my local shop but others are outright dumb and/or I have to educate them) and proceed to browse their selection and buy my games (or not).

They are not paid enough to know every little thing and they sure as hell are always under pressure from the regional corporate heads to "help you trade in and preorder". I don't need to make their job harder and they don't need it either.

Most of the clerks at my local Gamestop outright hate the company policies, pay, regional managers, etc. but they are just there to pay their bills and to go to school. And I understand that. I like how my local gamestop clerks are not brain-dead "Im hardcore, no really!!" corporate kool-aid drinking guys but basically just your average gamer and when they are brutally honest about everything its a breath of fresh air in an overall bullshit environment.

Hicken5282d ago

Bubbles up for being thoughtful and intelligent, fear.

As a GS employee myself, there's little I hate in this world more than the very company I work for.... but one of the things that comes close is people giving us a hard time for shit we can't control.

I can't tell you how many times I've avoided being axed for not putting up good enough "numbers." Truth be told: I don't give a shit about them. I want you to come in, be able to find what you were looking for, enjoy your visit, want to come back, and want to recommend us to others. If these things don't happen, then my job hasn't been done.

I am LITERALLY a few inches away from giving my boss an expletive-filled earful over his lazy-ass habits, which have been fostered by the company's propensity to favor the quick cash of a reserve (or seven) over the assured patronization of someone who becomes a repeat customer. My boss has, twice in the past two days, told outright LIES in order to get people to sign up for the discount card, and it dusgusts me to my core. But it's either that or have no job at all.

i love gamestop, because i can walk up, literally like 3 min walk, trade in games i got my full 60 dollar value, and trade in for some new game.

i dont like amazon and ebay, i dont want to waste my time selling a product especially something i care very little about.

moreover, they have sweet %50 towards new games.. i love it. traded in dragon age 2 , la noir, and mlb10 and that paid for bf3 :D ... and heres my rating for each game in order: 7/10, 7/10, 9/10 ( i have mlb 11).

additionally, they always have certain times where you can buy 2 used copies and get one used for free. thats when i shop :D

BiggCMan5282d ago

Those are good deals to you? 180 dollars worth of games, to get a 60 dollar game? Yeaaaa.. I like my local Gamestop because of the employees, but as a company, they rob the consumer without question.

ShoryukenII5282d ago

I hate mine because of the employees. I remember when I tried to get a game from them and they asked for my ID so I had to go to Walmart (they didn't have it). That was the first time that ever happened. This is why I love Best Buy. They aren't douches and they don't care what you're buying.

TheFirstClassic5282d ago

Problem is every time you go into Gamestop they try to shove stuff down your throat.

fooxy5282d ago

This !

"Hello Sir ! Would you like to pre order Madden 2014 or sign up for our $15 power up membership so u can have dollar off next time u purchase game ?" I don't go there anymore

bens5282d ago (Edited 5282d ago )

I like gamestop and do buy games there. Call me old fashioned but I prefer to have the actual disk and box
in my hand. ( I feel like im alone here, does anyone do this ) I buy about 90 percent of my games from the
store.

Something about going out, browsing and talking to
someone is great. If all shops went digital I would be
a sad gamer, cause that's not the way to go.

SnakeCQC5282d ago

i don't think anyone has a roblem physically purchasing a game its just people dont like to be ripped off. in the uk we have a similar store called game who do similar stuff in regards to trade ins games are £40( 80 bucks) if you wanted to return but didn't have a receipt thay have and will offer you £5.20 in store credit or dumb antics(prewned items are always 5 pounds less than full retail so they are immediately sold for £35)

Panthers5282d ago

Most people like owning the physical product. Its just Gamestop has become ridiculous. They try to shove a million things down your throat everytime you come in and offer horrible deals for trade ins. I just shop at Walmart or Bestbuy. The only good thing about Gamestop is people there typically know about games, so you have someone to talk to. But otherwise its a joke.

dcortz20275282d ago

I feel ya. I hate digital downloads! I love having the physical copy of anything (music, movie, game).

JTX5282d ago

I haven't been to gamestop since the deus ex fiasco and I don't plan on ever going back. I prefer to have my games sealed when I pay full price for them.

Gamer Tries to Sell PS4 Pro to GameStop, Ends Up Being Asked to Pay the Store

A gamer tried to sell his PS4 Pro to GameStop USA and found out that he would actually have to pay the store.

Lionsguard429d ago

Gamestop: And I'm taking a huge risk here.

1Victor429d ago (Edited 429d ago )

Well there’s no stop like GameStop I’m surprised they didn’t go deeper into the hole with their USED cables and controllers prices.
Edit:
For those that don’t know if you go to trade a console you need it to be ready to go with all the controllers and cables if you don’t have them they ask you to buy them and deduct the price from the monetary appraised for the console

Gamingsince1981429d ago

That makes perfect sense really, why would you be selling your console without all the things it came with and needs to actually be used.

jznrpg429d ago (Edited 429d ago )

eBay.. not having anything for it makes it seems stolen though

Profchaos429d ago

Not always I've seen plenty of refurbished units go cheap because people have picked them up broken then repaired and onsold with no controller or cable. When they are this old many people just want to replace the main unit

jznrpg428d ago

I doubt those people are selling at GameStop

BeHunted429d ago (Edited 429d ago )

In the UK, eBay has removed selling fees, letting you list and sell any item for free.

andy85428d ago

Correct. This is why day one games cost me practically nothing now

Eonjay428d ago

They are gonna take that same console and sell it for $300.

Inverno429d ago

GameStop era ended in the teens. Let it die bruh.

S2Killinit428d ago

I love gamestop. I still shop there. I prefer buying a game from a game store than a department store.

Inverno428d ago

I preferred goin to Circuit City but that died out. Years back I'd go to Best Buy cause of Gamer Club, now Best Buy barely sells games and doesn't sell Blu-rays and looks dead most of the time. Same with GameStop, these stores look like a barren wasteland of Funko Pops and anime figures. These retail stores don't seem to care about pulling in customers. Those figurines are neat, I collect them too but they ain't pulling me into a GS. Rather than attracting gamers they've pay walled everything behind a subscription. As if they weren't already cheapskates back then with their trade ins.

FinalFantasyFanatic428d ago

I still go in there and browse, but never buy anything, the video game section is getting smaller and smaller, even the PS5/Series X/Switch game selection is getting tiny.

tiron8428d ago

I miss Best Buy's Gamer Club, I used to get pre-orders for like 20% off often with other discounts then get points I could trade into discount rebates. It was so good, getting day 1 games for like $30.

When they shut that down I stopped buying games day 1 almost completely.

raWfodog429d ago (Edited 429d ago )

I stopped going to GameStop when they no longer let me use my monthly $5 rewards points towards PS network cards.

Knightofelemia429d ago

Weird I live in Canada and the Gamestop near me says you need the console, controller, controller cord, and an HDMI cord before they will take a console on trade. And if the console shows signs of being opened they still won't take the machine. And if you upgrade the PS4 HDD from 500 gig to a 1TB they will count that machine as modified and label it as a 500 gig model. Better to just sell it on Facebook Marketplace.

clevernickname428d ago

I also live in Canada. I had a similar experience trading in an Xbox One S. Gamestop would give me a pittance for it, so I sold it on Marketplace for almost as much as the original selling price.

GameStop plans widespread store shutdowns after closing 300 locations last year

GameStop has announced plans to shut down stores across the country after closing 300 locations just last year.

The popular gaming retailer says net sales have fallen 20 percent, now sitting at $860 million - a drastic change from its $1.08 billion in 2023.

Also giving you about $5.00 off for buying a used game is just bullshit. For example: https://www.gamestop.com/vi... New is $59.99, if your going to sell it for a used price it needs to be at least $10-$20 less. I hope GameStop just goes away.

OtterX516d ago

Same nonsense they were doing 20 years ago. 🙄

Time to take old yeller out behind the shed...

Grilla515d ago (Edited 515d ago )

One of the reasons I went digital. I used to trade games in back in the day when money was tighter. Trading a game in for 10-15$ isn’t worth the trouble. Especially when they turn around and sell it for almost full price.

RhinoGamer88516d ago

Not surprising, but sad. WooT is killing it with their game discounts...on new games.

raWfodog516d ago

This is just market forces adjusting for GameStop’s long-time practices of nickel and diming the consumer. I feel bad for the workers though. It’s not good that they have to lose their jobs over this.

P_Bomb516d ago

Unfortunate for the staff, but not unexpected.

46player516d ago

Not too surprising. Lots of people buying digital.

And GameStops trade in and resale pricing strategy is awful for customers. I will miss them when they are gone though.

Most I will miss being able to trade in a console, get a couple hundred towards the new model like PS5 to PS5 Pro.

SonyStyled516d ago

I’ll miss the midnight launch parties. Standing in line with strangers sharing our excitement about a video game. Digital took that from us. I wish younger audiences could experience how joyful it was

Kombatologist516d ago

I often think about times like that and how good we had it, before social media and smart phones gave way to a generation that expects instant gratification.
