I think this is directed more towards a "console features" standpoint.

But as far as gameplay and graphics I think devs have just begun to scratch the surface. I think we all want and expect more out of the enemy AI and graphics.

I can imagine a whole lot more than what's already been done. If those things are possible on current gen consoles or not is a completely different question though.

Graphically there's still a lot to improve on. Starting with the obvious ones, 1080p, 60fps, AA. Then there's the endless list of other details that can be improved; shadows, animations, textures, number and detail of objects on screen, draw distance, physics, weather effects, destructive environment, better AI... So yeah, I think next gen will be a big jump from this one.

This generation can still get better. Remember early PS2 games compared to God of War 2? That was a big leap. We've seen a big leap when comparing Resistance 1 and Uncharted 3, but there are things that can still be improved within the next 2-3 years.

Would a new generation of consoles be good to have? Sure, as long as it doesn't break the bank as the PS3 did during its launch.

I don't think Houser would make a statement about games. You never know what someone's going to come up with in the gaming world.

I've always wanted the AI in enemies and NPCs to be developed enough so that I wouldn't be able to predict what they were going to do such as how they would react to my presence or by my actions.

For example, in Halo Reach, I know how the Elites will react to my presence. They all behave the same way. Fighting one Elite is a lot like fighting another. They're not distinct in their behavior, their voice, their beliefs.

And this holds true for pretty much any game that has NPCs. I think a huge innovation would take place if developers worked very hard on the AI aspect of the game as well as making certain that each enemy has a different appearance. That way the feeling of novelty would persist throughout the game. This feeling is non-existent in most games.

Then there's destruction. Destruction is the quintessential form of interaction we have with our game world. If you can't cause damage to a building by shooting an RPG at it, you're going to feel somewhat cheated, somewhat disappointed. That's how I felt with GTA 4.

There's also object permanence or action permanence. I hate it when I shatter a glass window or break a vase and the shattered fragments disappear. I don't like it when blood splatter from a conflict will disappear from the wall or ground and I don't like it when the enemy's corpse disappears. I don't like it when bullet casings disappear from the ground or bullet holes I've made in walls. I don't like it when my interaction with the environment is temporary, basically. I would like to play a game where my actions have permanent effects on the environment, even in multiplayer modes. I would like it if in Halo MP I can blow up a bridge with a rocket launcher and prevent people from crossing through that path for the rest of the match. I want to cause severe structural damage.

Another innovation would be for players to be able to redeem their game points for valuable prizes.

If I earn a high gamerscore, it means that I've purchased/played many games, which means that I've supported the industry in some way. If I play enough of these games and reach a high enough gamerscore, I should be able to get a free game for my efforts. This will encourage more people to play and purchase more games. From an ethical standpoint this may be deemed wrong, but for the gamer and for the industry it's a win-win situation.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
