8BitBot: Ico & SotC: Still Relevant?

"When the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD remakes were announced we were struck with a bout of mixed emotions. The simple reason for that is our incredibly fond memories of these two PS2 masterpieces were about to undergo a test, a test we felt wasn’t needed. Considering how poorly other icons from our youth have withered in the test of time the alarm bells were justified. Luckily the PS2 era is not all that old so hope remained for these two gems. In addition to that we wondered if these games are relevant anymore, when they launched they stood out as games that might be considered art, games that deviated massively from the norm and made an impact and now that impact might not be as prevalent. Join us as we try to find the answers."

Still relevant, what now? Try, still relevent ten years from now, nutter.

A rather snarky comment there. I think what he means is that; is ICO still revenant in a world of "current gen" consoles with vastly better graphics and capability.

Wintersun6165295d ago

Exactly. And the answer to that question is yes, they are still relevant. They're not visually stunning like todays AAA games, but their beauty lies elsewhere in design, atmosphere, simplistic gameplay and a different way to tell a story.

It's only just been released as an HD Remake, it's still clearly relevant, which is why it happened, to even ask the question is moot. Sony funded a HD remake, Team Ico dev's made it happen and then gamers of this "current gen" bought it to play on their "current gen" consoles!

Now thats snarky.

thaiboy5295d ago

Released as and HD Remake, which means that the same models are used with a low polygon count, flat textures and "past gen" animation. Regardless if Sony funded it or not the question remain valid.

Gamers of this "current gen" who have bought have probably done so for two reasons, nostalgia or curiosity. The nostalgia bunch are creating a resale market because clearly they are playing it a second time and have bought it before so it's with more interest that we look at the curiosity crowed, sale to which are part of a new market for Sony.

The question is, how big are these two rather niche markets and are the games still relevant?

So no it's no a moot question, clearly

GrandTheftZamboni5295d ago

Well, at least the games are in 3D, which most of the current gen games aren't. So, even for that fact only, I would say these two games are relevant. I played Ico in 3D and I think it's visually stunning, regardless of low-res textures.

MysticStrummer5295d ago

Who cares why people bought the HD remake? If enough people bought the collecton to justify it, and only Sony knows what that number is, then the games are still relevant. Both games have aspects which go deeper than graphics and which few current gen games match.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
