Will GTA V Delay The Next-Gen?

360 Magazine: Will Rockstar’s all-conquering open world series extend the life of this gen for another year?

Dave is correct.

No one game will ever delay the plans to release a console. Let's use microsoft as an example. The only outside source that may affect the release date would be the release and timing of the WiiU.

I say this because I am sure Microsoft are eyeing their competition and are planning on timing their release around a similar time to take the sales.

With the classic "though economic times" that consumers are facing a lot won't be purchasing two systems and all the games and accessories that go with them. Microsoft (in this example) will seek to get the most money out of the gate.

Things like that affect next gen release timing. Not a game. There were many great games released at the end of the last era. Still the new systems rolled out when the big wigs decided.

Dailynch5301d ago

I don't know, GTA is a pretty big series. How much did Microsoft pay for a short span of exclusivity on the GTA IV's DLC? It was quite a lot if I remember rightly.

scotchmouth5301d ago

You remember correctly. It was to the tune of $50 million if memory serves correct.

San Andreas being released in June 2005 had no foreseeable impact on the 360s release which was November 22 of the same year.

The thing is our generation (360 and PS3) will still be getting games produced and released as the next gen develops an install base. Not every home immediately gets the newer systems. Some hold out for a better more lush game library and some simply wait for the price to come down.

The newer systems will essentially be making money on two different fronts. The newer systems and the current gen with the lowered prices on systems, games and accessories.

I assume we agree to disagree but I reiterate that no game no matter how large effects a major company's game plan to showcase it's newest product and generate money.

Christopher5301d ago

So much no that its release now is likely a sign of how far off the next gen is (I'm guessing mid to late 2013).

mike_d_5301d ago

Here we go with specualating.Just wait for the game.If it doesnt come out this gen then obviously it will next gen.

MostJadedGamer5301d ago (Edited 5301d ago )

Um if it comes out on the 360, and PS3 it WILL be this Gen. Doesn't matter if the Wii U has already been released or not.

Like I said in my earlier post there will be a lot of overlap between This Gen, and Next Gen.

MostJadedGamer5301d ago (Edited 5301d ago )

GTA V by itself has zero effect on how long this gen will last or when the next gen will start.

There will be considerable overlap between this gen, and next gen. Even though the Wii U is coming out in 2012 the PS3 will still be a very viable console with lots of games through 2014.

I'm guessing all next gen consoles will be backwards compatible and that Sony/MS/Nintendo will continue to support this gen for a few more years - so I'd have to say no.

matey5301d ago

well they havnt even announced a console 4 the game yet so lets wait 4 that first this site posts some stupid stuff i must say for all we know it might be WiiU exclusive or timed as it will be 1080p on WiiU with controls that own bettr frame rate and over all better everything textures/lighting the lot

BlmThug5301d ago

That dream of yours is just that. A dream

DARK WITNESS5301d ago

I am not saying R* would do this, but when this gen started there were some games that crossed over last and this gen.

for example, Farcry, SC double agent, etc. they launched on the original xbox and came out on the 360 as well. There were a few others I just can't think of now.

steve30x5301d ago

It would be nice if it was a launch title for the next consoles.

Rockstar launches official marketplace for mods

Rockstar has launched an official marketplace for "every server and every player" to buy mods: Cfx Marketplace.

I wonder how much of this isn't just taken work of others who have modded for free.

Edit: Also, great way for R* to take popular ideas and build them into GTAVI based on demand.

fr0sty121d ago

What I see happening here is, R* is going to ban mods in GTA6 UNLESS you buy them from the marketplace and R* then gets a cut of that sale.

ActualWhiteMan121d ago

Ah, perfect timing with them taking down the Bully online fan mod. Greedy a$$ company.

Christopher121d ago

It's okay as long as they get a cut of the money.

fr0sty121d ago

Expect R* to force it on you.

Snookies12121d ago

Yep, right there with you. I'll happily donate to a mod creator if it looks really cool, or if I enjoy it. But expecting payment up front? Nope, not touching it.

IanTH121d ago (Edited 121d ago )

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.

PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025

O'Dell Harmon Jr. writes: "Before we say goodbye to 2025, let’s take a look back and see what were the most downloaded games of the year. It was a great time for sports, shooters, and some new PlayStation VR2 games. Sports favorites topped the charts in US/Canada and EU, with NBA 2K26 and EA Sports FC26, respectively.

Juggernaut GTA V found a home in the top three for both regions, with new 2025 release Battlefield 6 claiming second place in the US. Fortnite took top place for free-to-play games, and Beat Saber continues its PS VR2 success."

FH5 4th in Europe compared to North America 14th. Not surprising.

LucasRuinedChildhood122d ago

I think it shows how shortsighted it was for Sony to let go of Evolution and not get them to make some sort of competitor (open world Driveclub?) 10 years ago.

bionicstar122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

its a hard bet to make. hindsight is always 20/20.

Christopher122d ago

After Driveclub's reception, hard to say it would have done well enough to compete. It's easy to dream of such a thing, but to make it happen? It's taken how long for CoD to be dethroned? And it was dethroned by Hogwart's Legacy and has gained it right back just the next year.

It’s funny to watch the only games EU and USA agree on was Minecraft and back ops 7 both regions on 6 and 7 spot respectively other than that FIFA rules EU

gold_drake122d ago

I would like to see a list that has both free to play and paid games together, but at least we have this.

To this day GTA5 is a top downloaded game and it makes me wonder if the industry is really ready for GTA6. I imagine almost nothing else will sell during that game's release window.
