PS3 update 4.0: Considering firmware features

Inentertainmen: There was a recent PlayStation 3 firmware update, but Sony did not advertise it, as it was on a minor one. However, we are now considering what PS3 update 4.0 firmware features will be coming? It’s no secret that there’s a lot more to come, but will it come to the next major release?

Sony hasn't done a significant firmware update that adds great robust features to the XMB in so long. It's actually starting to really annoy me seeing as its my main console of choice.

r1sh125313d ago

I think they are using the PS3/PSN as a foundation to build what will come to the PS4.
We already know why X game chat wont work,
but I think they need to have actual softwre/'apps' in the pipeline. With FW 3.6 (possibly higher) the UK finally got a BBC Iplayer app rather than the annoying browser plug in. I really dont understand why they didn't do that in the first place. Also just for comparison - The Fall xbox update will add all the TV apps and a youtube app along with all sorts.
Im fairly certain with MW3 the upload to youtube direct will be longer clips and possibly HD?
Hopefully for PS3 only owners the youtube app gets put in. Netflix is coming to the UK soon too, maybe that will make it to the ps3, but knowing MS they have probably got a deal where they will get it first.
We wont know until its info is released

lol..I know about the whole permissions thing. But Im just saying with the current other TV channels they have which are browser plugins they could just make apps for them.

2nd I know the PS3 has a browser but its not the best browser. At one point I couldnt load soo many sites. If a dedicated youtube app was added it would be easier to navigate and use..
Then possibly integrate with other services and games.

I want to be able to "lock" a PS3 so that my kids can have a user login to play on but be unable to delete any apps or saved games.

That's my number one wanted feature right now.

Kleptic5312d ago (Edited 5312d ago )

The landscape for the ps3, as far as updates, has changed pretty dramatically...

cross game chat won't work...but they could still do a lot to make messaging better...as cross game invites HAS been implemented, but in a weird way in which it only applies to certain titles...

really the only thing user wise I would like to see is simplifying the in game xmb...90% of the icons give the same prompt to quit the game...making them pointless, and we don't need to see them...

just give us the basic features of the XMB friend/game/profile, etc...I would imagine that on its own would free up some of the designated OS memory and speed things up considerably...the messaging system is fine from the xmb, but has A LOT more features than what is really necessary during a game (would anyone really attach a photo during a online game and send the message?)...removing some of that stuff should make the messaging system less cumbersome, and faster...

fix the trophy sync thing during gameplay too...if you accidentally look at your own profile during a game, that will nearly lock up the system when you try to back out of it...

and damn it...auto delete game invites from your xmb after they expire...I'll have 50 BF3 invites in just a few hours of play, and never know which one is the most recent from that specific person unless I go all the way down and find their name...the inbox just gets completely cluttered within minutes...

a youtube app would be nice though, assuming it fixes what the browser does poorly...the browser can load the full youtube site (much better than youtube's own XL thing), but the browser's flash version is junk...stuck at the absolute lowest quality available, and still get problematic memory errors...the browser is worse than a lot of phone browsers...if a youtube app that at least let you use 720p became available, that would be great...

ikkokucrisis5312d ago

Yea, sad how you cant watch anything on youtube in high def on ps3.

Video codec expansion would be sweet too

darthv725312d ago

a store that doesnt ask you every time you want to exit

nveenio5312d ago

Onboard AC3 transcoding would be nice, too.

theaceh5312d ago

Is the current youtube on ps3 really only 240p?

theaceh5312d ago

An xmb based equalizer and blu-ray support for the recently released PS3 gaming headset would be nice.

darthv725312d ago

sony make stream installing for downloaded content. As of now, you download it then you have to install it. It depends on how you are downloading i guess because there have been a few instances where what i downloaded installed automatically afterward.

Still a two step process. Call me jealous but I like how the 360 installs as its downloading so its ready to go once finished.

finally a firmware update to look forward ? how long has it been.

princejb1345313d ago

the only thing i ask for is a faster in game xmb, so i can reply to my messages quickly, is that much to ask

mike_d_5312d ago (Edited 5312d ago )

I don't get why Sony falsely advertises their products before they are released. Before the PS3 came out they were all like The Cell processor can do it all,its the most powerful processor to date for consoles, but yet the 360's processor is less and can do more.If they make statements like that then they should back them up.Honestly i think using the XMB was a fail because they couldnt come up with anything so they're like lets just use the PSP's XMB.And the XMB takes foreverrr to load when in-game,if its that powerful it should load up no problem right?

Kleptic5312d ago

its not the processor...i assure you the PS3's processor can do a lot more as a multimedia device than the 360's...

its the OS...the 360's OS is simply better in a user friendly sense (for the most part, anyway)...they integrated community features in a much simpler and understandable way...Sony on the other hand tries to do WAY too much with the xmb, especially when playing a game...and its obvious that different departments are butting heads about it...

the in game xmb is 'slow' because it loads about 200 icons depending on how many pictures and videos you have...most of which do absolutely nothing other than give the same prompt 'you will have to quit the game to perform this option'...removing every icon that does nothing in game would go a long way to free up some very valuable memory...making what you can do in game perform much faster...

the design of the XMB is great for an idle PS3, allowing you to get to specific content very quickly...but in game...its simply too much, and I think more than anything there should just be a much simpler version of the xmb displayed...the shortcuts on my keyboard are great for this, but the xmb is still painfully slow in game when compared to 'normal'...

just sending or reading a message has you going through 3 or 4 different tabs before you can type a reply...press the PS button, scroll over to find mailbox, received, then click on the clip of it, then a box you can read...then another click for reply or whatever...its ridiculous...the mailbox shortcut on the keyboard still only gets you to that space on the xmb, you still have to merge through 3 other things to actually get prompted to type a message...then 3 more clicks to send it...all of which are far from responsive...

make it like texting with conversations...simple, fast, and without all the other junk on the in game xmb...probably would use less memory than it does now...

Daver5312d ago

@r1sh12

yea i agree with your ps4 comment, thats what i think too

A new browser would be cool, i dont use it alot (as ive got a laptop) and i dont use it much because its not very good

If Sony fixed it id probably use it more

milohighclub5314d ago

android app intergration would be cool but unlikely

danswayuk5313d ago

The perfect time for Sony to add some features we really want would be in firmware update 4.0.

Fishy Fingers5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

Be nice to actually see a worth while update, one that brings new useful features aimed at gaming. But I wouldnt get my hopes up, the PS3 OS moves at a slooooooooow pace, or at least seems to.

#1 Update the p*** poor "browser" to at least one on par with mobile phones.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle20d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7728d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga28d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199227d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga27d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman27d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box28d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion27d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7228d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7528d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit28d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14928d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7728d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
