Am wavering on trying this - heard good things but wonder if I value my sanity too much!

amazing game, difficulty way over-rated. batman AC is 10x harder on hard mode than this game.

and now for some real tips becuase the author is an is an idiot....

1. explore slowly, go out, explore, when you reach enough souls to level turn back and level. you will memorize the path, up to where you turned around and know what to expect up to that point. you get a little farther every time and rarely lose a large amount of souls while leveling at a decent pace

2. be patient, explore slowly and carefully

3. get the heal miracle, use that to heal afetr battles and flask to restore during battles. invest in melee/endurance/health/pyro

4. do pyromancy as a secondary to your melee / invest almost evenly, but slightly more in strength so you can use better gear

5. dont use your humantiy at any point except before bosses to get extra help

6. always hit the bosses with two handed, use shield until you see the opening, switch to two, hit a couple times, back away go, back to shield, rinse and repeat

7. UPGRADE YOUR EQUIPMENT! esp your shield/sword

8. when fighting the last boss, use iron flesh then spam combustion, easiest fight in the game that way

note: i didnt use magic at all, seemed pointless to me and pyro was just as effective but easier to work with, use t if you want but i found it very unimportant

took me 65hrs and i was level 76 i believe when i finished

Have to disagree with this.

Like anything it's really all subjective, but as a gamer who plays nearly everything on the hardest difficulty setting, Dark Souls has and is still being a complete pain in the ass to get through.

It's worth every penny for those who enjoy a rough challenge, but I'd say stay away to those that simply don't have the time & patience to put into it. Save that dough for other games that might appeal to you. Dark Souls is definitely a niche gaming experience.

If you're not sure, I'd suggest giving it a rent at the very least. You'll either discover a gem like so many of us have, or you'll decide it's just not for you. Everyone with a passing interest should at least try it just to experience something unlike anything else they've played. It's easily one of my all time favorites, along with Demon's Souls, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Demons Souls is much harder

BlackTar1875306d ago

I disagree. I find Dark souls harder then demon souls and i beat demon soul 3x lvl 158

On dark souls the Tomb of Giants Demon ruins and klin of first flame were all difficult on my first go. The only level/ part on Demon soul i had trouble with is Valley of Defilement.

Captain Qwark 95306d ago (Edited 5306d ago )

i would agree to this, i didnt finish demon becuase i got into it a month before dark, but what i did play was much more difficult. the penalty for being hollow is barely noticeable while having your health halved was much more punishing....

and @blodulv, everybody has their opinion but i am also the same type. i like my games on hard and i played ds pretty much how i described it in my tips. i didnt find it very difficult. the 2 bosses from anor londo were the hardest thing in the game. imo the first couple hrs were difficult, then it gets easy, then it gets hard at anor londo. once i finished anor though, i walked through the game like i was a god.

batman AC on the other hand, i have died at almost every encounter of more than 5 dudes, granted i just started and im getting better and better everyday but its still very challenging. i started it on hard for my first play through too, it is getting easier though partially becuase the first things im upgrading is all of my armor

@blacktar187...

tomb was def the hardest to explore but nito was easy, also if you had cast light that helped. demon ruins was easy imo except the half dragons

Being a Demon's Souls veteran makes it a little harder to judge I think. I knew what I was getting in to this time and already had a good technique down, so I think that gives Dark Souls the impression of being easier at times. I think the boss fights in Demon's Souls were much harder, but otherwise I'd give Dark Souls the nod for greater difficulty overall.

Getowned5306d ago

I think Dark Souls is harder in someways but I like Demon's Souls more.I really miss the Nexus.I like the the fact that in Demon's Souls you could just go where you wanted to with the archstones.getting out of blight town was a pain!! there too much backtracking.Over all I love Dark Souls but there are a lot of things Demons Souls did better *IMO*. I'm giving dark souls a break for a bit to play some Batman AC which is my GOTY of far!!!. but yeah Dark Souls is awesome and it's kicking my ass lol.

I don't remember finding any enemy in Dark Souls as tough as Black Phantom Selen or the Maneaters (Bell Gargoyles were certainly modeled after them but were much easier) in NG+ and beyond. I also thought the Valley of Defilement and 4-2 were tougher than any area in Dark Souls. Most of the time when a boss put the hurt on me in Dark Souls it was the first time facing him and I was immediately charged and pummeled. I certainly got ambushed by the Capra Demon and Stray Demon (wow, was I pissed about losing my souls and the way you encounter this toolbox), but I took them down once I knew what to expect. The Maneaters in Demon's Souls, on the other hand, are always brutal in NG+ and beyond, and you're on a narrow bridge that makes the encounter even more savage.

Dark Souls does limit healing compared to Demon's Souls, and I would think mages would have a much tougher time in Dark Souls given that they limited magic uses. However, you can increase your healing opportunities quite a bit by kindling the bonfires and using the healing miracles to the point that you could heal dozens of times.

In the end, I thought the bonfires and lack of a big penalty for dying made Dark Souls a bit easier. I haven't experienced anything like the feeling of having to start from the very beginning of 5-2 (before opening the shortcut) or 4-2 after dying near the end of the level and maybe being invaded a few times on the way. I felt pretty devastated when I lost all my progress and souls like that.

AKS5306d ago

@Getowned I miss the Nexus mostly because I thought the NPCs were more memorable in Demon's Souls.

I'm wondering how far you've progressed in Dark Souls. After completing Anor Londo, you can easily move around the world rapidly. Even on foot I can get from one place to the next in most instances very quickly after I've opened up the shortcuts. You can run from the very beginning of Anor Londo to the boss room within maybe a minute or so with the shortcuts opened.

lastdual5306d ago

Demons Souls is more unforgiving. It punishes you more for failure.

However, Dark Souls is hands-down the harder game in terms of actual gameplay. The combat is deeper, there is a greater number of genuinely dangerous enemies, and you have fewer overpowered abilities (magic in Demons Souls basically turned the game into easy mode).

Basically, you'll die more often in Dark Souls, it's simply that the punishment for death isn't as steep (thanks largely to bonfires).

BlackTar1875306d ago

Yea ill give a pass to Demon souls bosses. But i still stick by i actually played the whole demon soul play though one as a dead phantom lol. Newb move for sure :) and i still only had a problem on valley of defilemnt.

Im just not one who says demon should was very hard. Yes i had a tuff 1st 2 hrs then the game was pretty easy compared to what people were saying so i blew right thru it and stumbled on valley. the amount of different enemy patterns in dark souls make it harder in my opinion.

I loved the demon soul nexus alot more which is the sole reason i think its a better game. I was like a lvl 50+ int on demon soul so running into a boss room casting inferno i would win every fight in 3 seconds. and casting soul arrow and homing arrow in demon soul really did trn it into easy mode.

Nevers5306d ago

I think I found DemonS to be more difficult than DarkS. I think that Hollow in DarkS is not as punishing as being a ghost in DemonS.

I am planning on playing DemonS again just cuz it was such a good game as well.

But I don't play the Souls games cuz others think them challenging. I play them cuz they are really enjoyable for me. I love fantasy hack n' slash and the Souls games really have the combat structure down compared to others.

jerethdagryphon5306d ago

demons was easy dark souls is much harder lack of major boss vunerabilitys nad some of the bosses being multi phase is much harder

Funnily, it's exactly the sort of frustration that I normally loathe in games, yet in Dark Souls it's very rewarding. You just have to approach it with an old fashioned, die and learn mentality rather than a modern tell-me-a-story mindset.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

DarXyde195d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake195d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
