Is Too Much Emphasis Placed On Graphics?

The current hardware generation has allowed for the creation of worlds that are almost photorealistic and developers have leapt upon this with reckless abandon, continually pushing the boundaries of what is graphically possible. But is this really the best move?

"Is Too Much Emphasis Placed On Graphics?"
this gen? yes

dangert125316d ago

I go on as if i love graphics but the games ive played the most this year are disgeae, terraria, minecraft, project zombiod, socom 4 and GTA III

princejb1345316d ago

i feel like developers spend more time making the game look pretty than making the game fun to play
ill take gameplay over graphics any day

TheFirstClassic5316d ago

I'm pretty sure Dice said that bf3 wouldn't have split screen co op because the graphics would take a hit. Don't know about everyone else, but I would rather have the local co op even if it didn't look as pretty.

BX815316d ago

@Wizziokid, I disagree. With todays tech there should be a heafty view on graphics. Not to say there aren't fun games that don't look up to standard. I think for the most part gamers want games that play/look well than games that play well and look bleh.

Pozzle5316d ago

To be fair, graphics have always been pretty important to developers. Even during the PSone/N64 days, games like Final Fantasy VII-IX, Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario 64 were really pushing the limits of graphics at the time of their release.

The way I see it.

Graphics sell games.
Frame rates keep people playing them.

ArchangelMike5316d ago

It's really about the immersion, higher graphical fidelity usually increases the level of immersion in a game. For example, go and play some of your favourite PS1 games now. There will inevitably be a lower level of immersion than when you first experienced those games. It's just natural progression of technology and expectations.

AntBoogy905316d ago

Idk bro, Final Fantasy 7 had me.

I was sucked into that Lifestream vortex.

KingPin5316d ago

lmao how are you getting disagrees. lol

can people not see its a double negative.

Quagmire5316d ago

Yes. Of course no one these days wants to play games which look like PS2 graphics, however there is WAY too much focus on game graphics.

Playing it right now looks amazing! :D
so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

DivineHand125474d ago

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

OG 2007 Crysis (not the remastered weirdo), is & will forever be a legend amongst the PC community.

PrinceOfAnger479d ago

This video will always be impressive to me, even for years to come. Some things here are better than games we have today, OG crysis is the best version!

OG Crysis physics, man ... amazing! Thanks for the reminder!

PrinceOfAnger478d ago (Edited 478d ago )

Looks really nice with VR mod too

FinalFantasyFanatic478d ago

I'm still shocked that it looks as good as it does today, puts some modern games to shame.

Profchaos477d ago

I thought the remaster was fine tbh some rough edges at launch but after some patches it's decent

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB478d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai477d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125478d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused478d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos477d ago (Edited 477d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up
