Arkham City’s First 3 Hours: A Disappointing Start

Eric of Vividgamer.com writes:

"After playing through the first three or so hours of Batman: Arkham City, which amounts to five chapters (plus two from the Catwoman DLC), I have to say that I’m impressed, but worried about the direction the game is going. A few things have me concerned at this point: the combat is far too similar to Arkham Asylum, the use of the detective mode is just as limited, enemies take too long to die, and the Catwoman portions of the game have yet to add any substance to the story."

I personally really enjoyed the combat in AA, so I doubt the fact that it hasn't changed in the sequel will bother me. But I think I may wait for the PC release, so we'll see what I think about it once I've gotten a chance to play it for myself.

i love batmans fighting system, so damn good looking

dwightmccarthy5343d ago

That opening scene with Bruce Wayne was cool.

"the combat is far too similar to Arkham Asylum"

Well, it would be it's a sequel. And the combat in Asylum was magnificent. We have a hole picker here. The worst kind of "game journalist".

well i didn't like AA combat that much which i talked about in the article and i give good reasons for that too. I guess i was expect AC to be much better instead of just new animations, which still you dont have any control over. You just hit 1 button and something happens, you have no control over a kick or a punch, a back hand or an upper cut. I got bored with AA combat and since theres nothing hugely different so far, im bored with AC combat. But it goes beyond that as well. its a sequel shouldn't we expect more than instead of the same stuff?

I'm one of those people that thought that AA was good, but not great. It had no glaring issues, but it didn't do anything for me to the point that I would say its "one of the best games of this gen"

I think the issue for me is that AA was too slow paced for me(using stealth as your primary weapon)..and I'm not a big fan of slow paced games. And before going into the game, I thought I was a HUGE Batman fan(loved Batman Begins) but realized that I really wasn't.

But you are in the minority. A lot of people loved Asylums combat. If it ain't broke and all that. Surely through logic you should have realised if you didn't get on with Asylum then you wouldn't get on with City. Sequels don't have to change the mechanics entirely. From all the praise it has i'd say they have done exactly what was expected.

Bloody Liverpool fans. :P

@Logic, i'm extrapolating using the data available to me. It's the logical conclusion.

"But you are in the minority. A lot of people loved Asylums combat"

Er...how do you know that? The people who take the time to give their opinions on the Internet don't make up all the gamers out there.

antz11045343d ago

Essentially, the combat from AA was perfect. How else could you fight 15 thugs at once and make it look that good? Simple answer: you can't. Too much user choice and it wouldn't flow half as well as it did. New gadgets? Great. New dive attacks? Alright. Didn't change the fight mechanic? PERFECT. Rocksteady knew where to stop.

But then again I don't know why Im trying, you thought the first three hours were disappointing:/

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm not sure if I would agree or not since I haven't played the game, but I think he's trying to say he expected them to do a bit more with the combat than just repeat what they did before with a few new animations.

clarkjudo5343d ago

A few combat moves and weapons have been added.

theherp805343d ago (Edited 5343d ago )

@antz1104 other games have done it without making it so simple. But the first few chapters were disappointing in terms of whats there but the story was good. Not sure if you read my article but i pointed out some of my concerns while still leaving hope.

Hey shitty reviewer. Quit your day job.

TheLiztress5343d ago

Tut, tut... Don't you know that name-calling is childish? I mean, you ought to add some substance to your comment without being rude.

Anyway, I haven't played Arkham City yet. And while I did enjoy the combat system in AA and thought it was great, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who thinks that sequels should offer some variation from their predecessors' gameplay. They should offer something new and improved. TO show that the developer has found out how to make what worked in the first game even better.

rrquinta5343d ago

He's not reviewing the game, just stating his opinion based on the first three hours. There's a big difference. Everyone can have an opinion, and who knows, by the time he finishes the game, he might say, "Hey, my first impression is wrong." Man.
