Sony studios begin PlayStation 4 projects

Preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games has begun at several internal Sony studios, Develop understands.

A trusted source connected to the matter has told Develop that various game projects are at very early stages, though didn’t reveal which of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios had been delegated the work.

Few in the games business expect a new PlayStation to launch before 2014 – the next few Christmases will likely see Sony marketing software for PS3, Move and its new Vita handheld.

Though there's no way Sony and Microsoft would want Nintendo encroaching in their most profitable market share.

_DarkCharizard_5306d ago (Edited 5306d ago )

Already happened in 2006. Little late to the party, eh Titanz?

On Topic: Its a good time to start. Hopefully Media Molecule will make a new ip for it ;)

Titanz5306d ago

The Wii U has the chance of penetrating both markets this time around.

longcat5306d ago

Preparations do not necessarily clue in as to a lunch window. Given the mess at the beginning of the ps3, it makes sense that they would want to be ready for a quick mobilization if needed.

A lot will depend on how the PS3 and Xbox fear during the next year.

Do they really want to launch a new console at over $300 given the current economic climate?

malol5306d ago

i think 2-3 years from now makes sense

nveenio5306d ago

I think the next Uncharted will be a PS4 launch title. Figure they've got three years instead of two this time. That'll put it right at around 2014 holiday.

Peppino75305d ago

If this is true, then we may be lucky enough to get a glimpse of it at E3 next year, or at least an announcement of some of the features and possible specs. They probably won't show anything about games though, unless the games have been in production before this announcement.

TyrannoTaurus5305d ago

@CaptainMarvelQ8 - You can use the Wiimotes with the WiiU.

sikbeta5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

@CaptainMarvelQ8

Not happening twice, novelty wore off...

@CaptainMarvelQ8

O-T

Bring it on, 2013 for a new gen would be ideal.

Kleptic5305d ago

'early stages of development internally'...

wonder if that means 'creating pre-rendered video to show alongside the Ps4's announcement'...

i'm kidding...hopefully...

Anarki5305d ago

So they must have a PS4 specs or a rough idea on it if there is work going out on the games.

HappyGaming5305d ago

Uncharted 4 has to act like the Halo 3 of 360!! It would make every Uncharted fan want to buy the PS4 asap instead of waiting for the price to drop...

BattleAxe5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

2014 works good for me. If they've just started developing games for the PS4, then it will take at least 2 more years. For now they'll probably concentrate on the PSV.......which is so technologically advanced, that it must have been designed by Aliens.

CommonSense5305d ago

I don't think Uncharted 4 on ps4 will have the impact that Halo 3 had on 360. a new MGS on the other hand...

I predict MS will announce their new console at E3 2012 for a 2013 launch. Sony will wait to see what MS showcases and what the price point will be and followup a year later. I'm sure Sony would like to be first to market with a real next gen system, but i don't think they can afford the risk.

RioKing5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

"Sony will wait to see what MS showcases and what the price point will be and followup a year later. I'm sure Sony would like to be first to market with a real next gen system, but i don't think they can afford the risk."

Launching a full year after the 360 REALLY hurt the PS3 initially, so it boggles my mind as to why sooo many people on here assume that Sony would do the same thing with PS4. I believe in Sony enough to think that they learned their lesson and won't let that happen again.

"I don't think they can afford the risk." What risk? The risk of launching earlier than MS and getting the sales lead that helped the 360 to pull ahead in sales so early? The risk of launching the same time as the new xbox, and not getting left in the dust?

Ummm....launching a year later than MS would be the real risk, dontcha think?

MysticStrummer5305d ago

Doesn't matter to me when MS and Mario launch. Sony has had the games I want to play for the last 3 generations, and until that changes they'll be getting my money whenever they decide to launch a new console. I still have games I'm looking forward to well into next year, so I'm in no hurry.

jetlian5305d ago

risk he's talking about is losses. Sony is billions in the red right now and it cost 2-3 billion to launch a console!

Sony,MS,Nintendo really don't care about this fanboy war. They care about profits and thats it! I don't think they will wait personally but that all depends on how fast MS is

DeadlyFire5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

I agree with Rio.

Sony isn't going to play the waiting game. Fall 2013 is a last one aboard launch date. That is their goal and they have more then enough, time, money, and resources to pull it all together. There might have to be a trade off on some supposed next generation technology, but Sony will make it work.

How is it to early? The 360 is 6 years old next month and the PS3 will be turning 5. If we get next gen consoles november 2011 which i pray we do, it will make this gen the longest in history.

brettyd5306d ago

i think you mean november 2012.

Im going to guess that we see new consoles holiday 2013.

green5306d ago

Yeah i ment november 2012.

frostypants5306d ago

Late 2012/early 2013.

No way will they wait until 2014. Any implications from Sony/MS that they will are just them trying to mislead competitors.

longcat5306d ago

Saying that the 360 is 6 years old may be a bit of an over-simplification.

Wi-fi, memory and kinect have been added to it.
Sure that graphical prowess has not changed, but the hardware has evolved.

Ps3 has stayed pretty much the same with the exception of move, but the high initial price point meant the they put everything they wanted from the get-go.

darthv725305d ago

wouldnt both systems be the same age? You figure they had a certain amount of development time and then manufacturing. The ps3 was delayed because of the bluray diodes but the internal hardware was already done at the same time as the 360.

Using their respected launch windows to denote their age would be wrong. Game development had started at least a year prior. So in theory, both of these units are over 7 years old.

To think there isnt a ps4 or 720 in the works is crazy. They have been working on the next systems probably 2 years ago. The blueprint to the hardware needs to be in place for software development to take form. If it is taking form now then the timing would be roughly 2013 for release.

Soplox5305d ago

@PEDROBEAR Cuz the PS3 had all that since the very begining. The 360 IS 6 years old.

4Sh0w5305d ago

Well I can't wait to see what its like.

DeadlyFire5305d ago

E3 2012 all three new consoles will be on display. This confirms it.

Nintendo U Fall 2012 launch
Xbox 3 2012/2013 launch
PS4 Spring/Fall 2013 launch.

I think what they mean by starting on games are brainstorming game ideas. You want a game or two in each genre when you launch to have a broad appeal.

Anon19745305d ago

I don't think we'll see a new console for Sony or MS until at least 2014-2015. The main reason, I feel, is economic. The PS3 and 360 are finally profitable. Developers are comfortable with the platforms, games aren't really lacking, and sales remain stable.

With the economic outlook so uncertain and money tight everywhere - are Sony and MS really anxious to jump feet first into another multi-billion dollar console development cycle? We can't really look to past console cycles because we've never been through times quite like this. I think Sony and Microsoft are each happy to delay until the economic situation starts looking up and I'm sure their shareholders and boards will agree.

And I really don't think they have to worry that much about the Wii-U. From what we've seen so far it seems like the Wii-HD that was long rumored. The Wii-U isn't a great leap over current consoles, and I wonder how families will take to a console where one child gets a giant, uber controller and the others have to take turns or use an old Wii-Mote. Nintendo has commented that you'll probably only use one per platform, and told developers to keep that in mind.

I don't know. Maybe Japanese families are more harmonious, but growing up with 3 younger siblings - a console with one special controller that only one can use at a time sounds like a recipe for disaster. I know I wouldn't buy one for my kids. Even with just my son, if he wants to have friends over, someone always would end up getting screwed. Let's be realistic here. I think Nintendo's lost their collective minds with the Wii-U.

Jdrm035305d ago

The down turned economy has had little affect on gaming other then a few studios that had closed down because such high investment in a game that bombed.

Other then that, the poor economy has had very little influence on teh gaming market. Heck, we have been watching the gaming market grow during this slow economic period.

Gamers still buy games in droves. Hardware is still selling very well for MS, Nintendo and Sony. I really don't see the economy playing to much of a problem in the launch of their next iteration of their consoles.

JoeReno5305d ago

@Jdrm

"The down turned economy has hadlittle affect on gaming other than a few studios closing"

A year after all this down turn hit studios were closing left and right. I disagreed because it was way more than "a few"

yabhero5305d ago

I respect what your saying for the most part. However I'm here to fix the conception that WiiU is weak based on the demos at E3. Compare a 2005-2009 PC. There have been some huge graphical leaps in the last few years. With WiiU boasting at least a GIG of RAM and a much better graphics chip. A slight graphics leap is like saying PS3 is just PS2 HD which we all no is not true. I think the WiiPAD will be cool and used a lot by devs for single player games but for multiplayer games the Wiimote will stil be default.

5305d ago
JoeReno5304d ago

@strobe

Not all were PC studios or smaller studios. Pandemic comes to mind right after they released that last psp starwars game which was pretty good in my opinion.

user8586215305d ago

Microsoft are going to wait to see the reaction and sales of the wiiU before they make their move, if it sells expect the next xbox in 2013

wsoutlaw875305d ago

The probably know what they want to do for the ps4 and have an idea of a release date and price, but im sure if the wii u starts killing ps3 sales, or if the ps3 sells like crazy then they will adjust the release window as much a possible. Starting games now gives them enough time to create truly good release titles to help sell the ps4. Im hoping for ps4 in 2013 my self.

trancefreak5305d ago

The big question is how much vram will be in there. Nvidia sport over 3gigs on some cards but how much is necessary for a console.

The more the better but I hope they have a ton of memory 1 for the graphics and additional for the system. Don't go cheap Sony shove that memory in there.

andibandit5305d ago

We all dream this, that a console manufacturer will go all in and put the best hardware in their console.

Im afraid that as long as money rules the world it's unlikely to happen. Especially for Sony whose finacial gain on the PS3, has been less than great.

trancefreak5304d ago

Yeah very true, I just can dream wait and see.

morkendo235305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

Few in the games business expect a new PlayStation to launch before 2014 – the next few Christmases will likely see Sony marketing software for PS3, Move and its new Vita handheld.

The discovery comes as rival platform holder Microsoft continues work on its next-generation system. Develop has published data from various sources that points to a Christmas 2013 release for the so-called ‘Xbox Next’.

FROM MY UNDERSTANDING if ps3 still be around for FEW more christmases 2011,2012 then ps4 should be launched sametime as 720 if thats the case then SONY did learn from pass mistakes. only question is WHAT would the price be?? over 399.00 be a big problem. Sony should make it COMPETITIVE for MS right out the gate BAM!! 350.00 with more features (3D gaming) in your face MS.

andibandit5305d ago

i think you're right about the 2014.

No new console the next couple of years....well we know how the holiday seasons will look like

Modern Warfare 3
BattleField Bad Company 3
Halo 4
UC 4
Killzone 4
Resistance 4
Infamous 3
LBP 3
Gears 4
FORZA 5
Portal 3
Rage 2
Batman Arkham State
Assassins Creed Abominations
Grand Theft Auto 5
Devil Souls
Borderlands 3
....

newn4gguy5305d ago

No Little Big Planet 2.
No Resistance 4.

techie5305d ago

How exactly is starting dev now too early?

aceitman5305d ago

if they make ps4 easy to develope for like the vita ,forget it it will dominate the market. thats what developers love about the vita .

5305d ago
trancefreak5302d ago

Well I know one thing Sony does need to and here is the example.

Call of duty series is huge so during today's foot ball game they show MW3 commercial. At the end it shows pre order on 360 now. There is no other mention of any other platform. I think we know Most people do play those types of games on the 360 But Sony needs advert the same way.

I know Sony are more into marketing their own exclusives but they need to go after the big hitters too especially the ones that hit the north American crowd.

showtimefolks5305d ago

ps3 and xbox360 are still atleast 250. these need to get down to 149 or 99 before a new console comes out

also i rather sony and ms take a extra year to actually move the tech forward than be 1st out on the market

i don't believe we will see a ps4 anytime soon 2014 at the earliest and maybe even 2015. and i do believe MS will jump the gun again and may even announce the console as soon as e3 2012. remember that ps4 rumors are not that much but xbox720 rumors have been going around since last 9-12months plus the rumors about internal studios already working on new titles like fable

so halo 4 for xbox360 and hal 5 for xbox20 in 2013?

either way i am satisfied with my consoles so i won't be buying a new one till 2014

trancefreak5302d ago

I just want the new consoles to be much more than what they are now because we will be playing with them probably until 2022.

I just want to live long enough to get a Ps5 or a Xbox 1080.

Legion5305d ago

Never too early to start planning on what your next generation is going to offer.

Better to start now and try to figure out how to work it into the architecture of the game system later, then to start later and be dealing with issues that could have been thought out beforehand.

RioKing5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

2014 seems a little late to me, and saving $15 a month til sometime in 2013 would be enough for me to easily afford a new system by that time :)

And @Showtimefolks, if the ps3 ever dropped to $99, I seriously hope the price of new games for it would go down as well :/

Legion5305d ago

I am not sure that I have seen game prices really go down along with system price. As long as the games are new then they will likely still get the retail price asked as usual.

Of course once a new system comes into play, most developers will likely jump to the new platform. But smaller developers will likely still make games for the older system to get a quick buck. But the games will likely fall into the same area as the low budget $39 games you see coming on the market today. But if it is still a high budget production... expect the normal price.

Disccordia5305d ago

Sony's Worldwide Studios need to start making games for the PS3 before they even think about PS4. I swear most of them have been sitting on their arses doing bugger all for six years. This isn't a dig at the eventual quality that comes out, but seriously, we are still waiting for games by Team ICO, SCE Cambridge and others and the likes of Polyphony and SCE Santa Monica have made a staggering ONE game in that time.

now that uncharted 3 is done. you can expect naughty dog to do the next uncharted as the launch title of the next system. I cannot think of a better way to show off a new system. I expect the new system to be launched early 2014. probably sucker punch working on a new game for ps4 too. think of games that released this year by the internal studios and those will be the ones working on ps4 titles.

naughty dog might do a 3 year gap for the next uncharted though and maybe release jak 4 as a stop gap title on ps3. just my guesses lol

fluffydelusions5306d ago

Aren't they doing HD remakes of jax & daxter next year?

Infernostew5306d ago

Sony will probably have another studio do the HD transfer. Just like how Sucker Punch didn't do the HD rerelease for Sly Collection.

Rage_S905306d ago

Bluepoint studios normally do all the hd ports for sony.

trenso15305d ago

boommuffin5305d ago

Ulf5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

Nes_Daze5306d ago

"Few in the games business expect a new PlayStation to launch before 2014 " What?! So we are expecting a console for launch at the earliest in 2014? BS, Microsoft is going to probably release a console in 2013, we've already heard of the WiiU, why the hell would Sony want to be late??

WooHooAlex5306d ago (Edited 5306d ago )

Yep, they're not going to sit on their asses and watch Nintendo and Microsoft take an early lead.
I think we could get a PS4 unveiling as soon as E3 2012, although TGS or a separate event later in the year might be more likely. I don't think we'll get out of 2013 without the PS4 launching in at least one market tho.

MrBeatdown5306d ago

Yeah, I really don't see Sony giving Wii U a two year head start.

I can see a new Xbox and PS3 reveal next year at E3. I'd be pretty surprised if we didn't, mainly because, I don't think either MS or Sony want to sit back and risk letting the other steal the show by revealing a new console, regardless of when each system releases.

And who knows where either are on the hardware development side, but now that Sony and MS have both released sequels to many of their big franchises this year, it seems like, now, two years before a potential next-gen launch would be the right time to move on from PS3 and 360 and have a comfortable amount of development time.

Sevir045306d ago

There has to be a clear jump in game presentation for many people to fork over money! I think the Wii audience are really out of luck. Montgomery is practically cutting its fanbase off. The PS3 has hit its stride and i think its strongest titles are now bearing fruit! Even 360 is showing good. I won't be upgrading to the PS4 at launch. Games are lookin.g better and better. And I think the difference between next gen pcs on market now and current gen HD consoles is negligent. It'll still be enough even in 2014 as first generation next gen games and 8th generation current gen titles will look markedly the same save for better physics and a little better ailiasing. For me I'll upgrade in 2015 or 16. Provided that I'm still alive.

green5306d ago (Edited 5306d ago )

So you think that the 360 and PS3 can produce marginal increase in graphical quality, resolution, AI etc over the games released this year? If you think so then you are dead wrong because both consoles are maxed out.

ANother thing is if you want to join the next gen cycle in 2016, then that is no concern of mine and its your decesion. But don't expect those of us that joined this gen the day it started in 2005, to wait 11 freaking years, stuck with hardware that was oudated in the 3rd year for you to get your act together.

And if Sony followed your logic, the PS3 will be called the PS2 because the PS1 would have lasted 11 years (1995-2006) before it was replaced.

Ingram5305d ago

With all due respect, you sound obsolete.

trancefreak5305d ago

LOL If your still alive. I know the years a flying by but at least I will have a bladder bag first so I don't have to pause the game hehe

Sevir045305d ago

I think most of you are really under estimating the power of these consoles... 5 years ago games like Rage and uncharted 3 and gears 3 weren't on the market. With more efficient ways to program an engine can usurp the previous limitations of its engine. It's also taken for granted that the thriving online capabilities have extended the feature set of these consoles, ps2 and xbox and gamecube didn't have such luxuries as being connected and having firmware updates and hardware revisions making them more future proof! Ps2 games and game cube couldnt do stereoscopic 3d yet here and still Both Ps3 and Xbox 360 got firmware updates to take advantage of this feature. To simply think that these consoles are maxed out is hugely missunderstood and greatly exaggerated!

The method of coding and programming may constitute a scenario where its resources for processing power is used to its maximum, but that doesn't mean becoming more efficient won't bring better results...

Masters of there craft will allow there engines to reach higher ceilings than previously and Both Sony and MS with thirty fledged out online will continue to make there machines capable of competing years to come with PC's believe me... If consoles of today couldn't keep up with PC's and there PERFECT AA ON 4000P DISPLAY SETTINGS AT 120fps there'd be a massive migration to the pc platform. That's the reason why late adopters are finally getting into the pc3 from ps2 or game era... They now see a clear difference and that prices are now there to become current.

Those who upgrade now or next year won't be plunking down cash to upgrade again for a next gen console for games at it start which will look marginally better than what's on their current console... Just saying. The PS3 and 360 maybe out dated tech but they sure do look amazing, and its just mind blowing to think that games like these exist on obsolete consoles by pc elitist and graphics whores...

jetlian5305d ago

People who just now upgrading are always behind! The new system isn't for them its for those of us who started in 06. This is the last of these systems.

Next year looking dry already

newn4gguy5305d ago

I think people forgot how long it's going to take to develop a game for a powerful system. It's going to take a while.

(It makes me think of the gap between Killzone, and Killzone 2, just because they had to make an entirely new engine for it.)

Bob5705305d ago

Let's be honest here. Next gen has been in development for a while. Sony and MS just keep it really tight because they want to sell as many PS3's and 360's before the next big thing overshadows them. The 360 and PS3 are dirt cheap to produce now, they are making some decent profits on each console.

EliteDave935306d ago

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit1d 21h ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg1d 18h ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon1011d 17h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle15d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage15d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
