As certain games rise in popularity, we see others emulating their best bits. Unfortunately this results in a stagnation of new ideas. A perfect example of this is Boss Battles in Action games.

With the release of the Devil May Cry series on Netflix, we take a moment to look back on this almost 20-year-old series and let you know the best of the best.
"Devil May Cry 2 isn’t trash. It’s just misunderstood by a fanbase that doesn’t like change."
This and putting DMC 2 number 2 is all I need to ignore this ranking. DMC2 is absolute trash and it's clear this person doesn't understand exactly why.
The PlayStation 3 is Sony’s most interesting home console ever, but what’s most interesting of all is trying to nail down the very best games on a console with hundreds of incredible games. Let’s give it a shot.
Sly Thieves in Time
Stay the Party
Portal 2
Dj Hero
Demon’s Souls
God of war Ascension
I've noticed a recent nostalgia for the PS3 and I don't get it for me it's been my least favourite generation to date and I've been gaming since the NES I just feel like the ambition of the developers outweighed the capabilities of the consoles so I remember lots of games running in the lower end of 20fps range and I remember for the first time ever actually disliking the duelshock 3 and it's curved triggers
Sure there were some standouts and great games but that's the only gen I switched entirely to PC gaming

There's still time for the Visceral Games cult classic action-adventure game Dante's Inferno to return to the limelight 15 years later.
Absolutely loved this game. Don't know why it went under the radar with so many people.
I think it was a couple of factors,
1. Everyone was anxiously waiting for God of War 3 to release(myself included), so we could see what the Santa Monica Studio were going to accomplish with the mighty PS3.
2. It was such a direct ripoff of the GoW formula right down to the button prompts, (such as clicking L3 & R3 to activate your ultimate) .
Now, of course lots of games borrow and evolve ideas, but this was like a carbon copy with a different skin and not quite as good or pretty.
3. It was cool to look at, it played fine, good artistic design and everything, but our standards were astronomically high after GoW 1 & 2… and it just wasn’t anything to write home about.
That being said, I have been wanting to revisit it for years.
I think with a few live service features EA could revive the IP and turn it into a million dollar franchise.
After playing gears of war 3 could not agree more. Also hearing about Deus Ex HR boss battles. Last generation boss battles were tough you did not when first seeing them know how to beat them at times making you want to look up online how to beat them , but the true reward was in figuring it out yourself. Now it seems they just throw boss battles in and say shoot it a lot or hit it in the back for massive damage. Bring back MGS snake eater style bosses or shadow of colossus epic bosses and I will be happy and actually feel successful and not just relieved when I defeat a boss.
Bosses fights used to be something epic and challenging.
Now it just eye candy with shiny effects everywhere. (gears of war 2)
Good thing From Software knows what their doing :)
Not all developers struggle at bosses though. Demons Souls, Ninja Gaiden and God of War have great bosses. However games with shoot the glowing weakspot mechanics need some work.
I quit playing World of Warcraft quite some time ago but I do miss how they used to program the boss fights, you had to probe around to find patterns and weaknesses before actually going for the kill. I'm surprised more developers do not borrow ideas from Blizzard.
