In-Game Advertising: Should We Embrace It?

From humble and comical beginnings, in-game advertising has snowballed into something ferocious. Video games were an untapped advertising gold mine; a new resource through which to reach the 18-34 year old 'sweet spot' market. From their traditional place in print media, television and radio, product commercials crept further into our lives as time progressed and technology converged. The Internet. Video games. Online gaming. Broadband speeds. Now, even the games we play on our iPhone and Android mobile devices are rife with commercial marketing. Advertising bombards us from all angles. Is this a harmless product of digital media's rapid progression, or is it something which could potentially spiral out of control?

If it were to somehow make games cheaper, I wouldn't mind.

HappyGaming5330d ago (Edited 5330d ago )

As long as mario doesnt stop in the middle of a scene turn around and say I need to drink a COCAAAA COLAAAA!!!! In a cheese way I could possibly live with it...

For example billboards in GTA IV with real brands or the people in Mafia drinking and smoking real brands...

Same rules as in a movie really if they go out of the plot to advertise it would ridiculous but when james bond speeds off in his porche its cool!

Edit: as for pop ups like in mobile apps you can stick those up your...

Nope download Ad Block Plus for PS3,360 and Wii to keep yourself safe from those annoying ads.

Personally I don't mind long as it don't become a nuisance or soon as I enter a game I being get hit with Advertisements.

GabeLogansBitch5330d ago

Until they stem trade-ins, I'm up for developers to do this...unless it's some jokers like Infinity Ward or Valve. Mind you, it sounds like a match made in Activision heaven.

Gamer-Z5330d ago (Edited 5330d ago )

NO, i didn't pay $60 to have a McDonald's ad shoved in my face.

Tanir5330d ago

If they do ads in games that would piss me off, it already gets me furious in the Iphone games that are free......but then again i dont think they mean the same type of ads hahaha

commercials in the middle of playing any game is a fail lol

How Burnout Paradise bucked the trend and made open-world racing irresistible

Met with derision from existing Burnout-series fans at the time, Burnout Paradise remains arguably the greatest open-world racing game of all time. Here's why.

SullysCigar1108d ago

I don't know why - and I know I'm probably on my own here - but I liked Takedown more. I think it was just 'different' enough to feel fresh. I also loved the destruction.

On that note, a new Motorstorm would be nice! All that mud, dust and car pieces flying everywhere blew my mind on PS3 - imagine what they could do now.

NJShadow1107d ago

I loved Burnout Paradise, but Burnout 3: Takedown will always be the best game in the series, for me. Burnout 3 is arguably the most fun game ever made, with the greatest licensed soundtrack ever.

EazyC1108d ago

I played through the remaster quite recently. It's not as good as I remember, but I think a lot of that is because the "open world" thing was still pretty fresh back then.

I do think there's a gap in the market for a game like Burnout. With the new gen they could really make car damage a huge selling point again.

BrainSyphoned1108d ago

Paradise gave me open world burnout before I knew it was a thing.

CPTN MITCHELL1108d ago

Burnout paradise remastered and original are my favorite, i got the platinum trophy for both games the nighthawk is my favorite car

Einhander19711108d ago

Personally don't give a shit for open world racers. Give me a new Motorstorm, Split second, Outrun.

This is a hard list to make… so many good bosses in the series.

I really enjoyed Psycho Mantis as a kid, I was blown away by the fact he could make my controller rumble and read my save games! And the tactics to beat him were crazy.

I’d put him in #1 with The End in 2nd.

Flawlessmic1489d ago

Going through this list desperatly makes me want a remake of 1 and then a 4k remaster with other better effect touch for mgs 2-4.

Cmon konami give us the ultimate mgs collection charge what you want ill pay it.

Just give me upgraded versions of the games that i can play all on one console.

Knushwood Butt1489d ago

Konami are too busy changing their name.

Z5011489d ago (Edited 1489d ago )

You want ANOTHER remake of 1? Twin Snakes not enough? There should be a limit on remakes imo. Reboots are fine tho.

"to soon" = "I didn't play at launch" = irrelevant

Flawlessmic1489d ago

Nope not enough that remake came to soon as it was the gen after.

We are now 3 gens later so yea remake it again or give us a 4k version with other graphical updates aswell.

generic-user-name1488d ago

Twin Snakes butchered MGS1, but even if it didn't, that game is still 20 years old and outdated. The original trilogy could all do with a ground up remake. Fortunately for people like you though, you'll not be forced at gunpoint to buy it if you don't want it.

The Olga fight is a bit harsh, she pulled off some neat tricks like using the tarp to hide herself (while showing off the cloth physics) and blinding you with lights you had to shoot out (a new mechanic).

The Fear is really harsh. Yes with the thermal goggles he's easily defeated but it's easy enough to miss the thermal goggles before fighting him. The fact that you can take advantage of how he frequently gets hungry during the fight adds to the options too.

How is Fortune ranked higher than both the above?

Liquid Ocelot at 29? C'mon that fight was epic, you get a whole new control scheme just for that fight and it's got tons of well thought out fan service.

Revolver Ocelot MGS1 fight at 9? You just ran around in a circle.

Though I do agree with your #1. The Boss fight was peak MGS, right down to pressing square to shoot the final bullet.

Name Last Name1489d ago

yeah, the list dropped the ball with Liquid Ocelot at 29.

DarXyde1489d ago

I think most people would say The End or Mantis, partly for the whole meta experience. Definitely great battles and Mantis messed with EVERYONE. That was the moment that people realized Kojima is a legendary troll in the making.

For me, though, The Boss is #1, no question. That battle was arguably the most significant in the series and was just legendary. Dare I say, my favorite boss battle, period.

Z5011489d ago

Not one boss from Peace Walker.
Who made this terrible list?
