One Year Down: How Do The PlayStations Stack Up?

PS3Fanboy: "On the eve of the PlayStation 3's first birthday, the entire team was huddled deep inside a cavernous mountain off the coast of Bangladesh, which is home to PS Fanboy Headquarters. There, we were visited by a celestial being who spoke only one immensely insightful sentence: "There is perhaps no greater litmus test for measuring success than to look back at one's past accomplishments."

At first, we weren't quite sure what our ethereal host wanted us to do with this incredibly important message. After hours upon hours of internal discussion, we made no headway into uncovering what we believe is certainly the key to finding the meaning of life".

The numbers, again, tell a bad news story...

Gaming is more popular and mainstream than ever before.
All of the "kids" that grew up on video games are now young adults with disposable income.

So, the fact that the PS3 has sold SIGNIFICANTLY less than the PS2 did at this stage in its life is a very telling statistic.

With the HUGE customer base the PS2 built, the PS3 should have EASILY sold double the amount of consoles that it has.

The main reason for the lack of sales is...

\\\Arrogance-
SONY assumed that whatever they labeled "PLAYSTATION" would be an instant success, regardless or price point and available software. With very few decent exclusive titles, and the Xbox360 and Wii kicking a55, many people aren't compelled to choose the expensive PS3 over the competition

PS1 got its ass kicked for over 1.5 years by N64. but it caught up and seriously destroyed Nintendo on year #2

PS2 got its ass kick by game cube for a whole year before the smash hits cam along to put Ninty and M$ to rest.

PS3 goes along the EXACT same road as its siblings did. Only this time its at 5 million sales faster then the PS2 or PS1. 2008 will be the year that PS3 pulls ahead.... again

Sony's Playstation 3 is leading the way in next generation technology and beyond.

dominated and took ninetndo's crown.

the ps2 witheld the throne and made record sales without having to appeal to the " casual market".

hopefully the ps3 will find the light like the ps1 did.

Really good article. I agree that now is really only the launch of the PS3. 2008 has the best line-up ever I can think of in PS history. Home is starting it off!

ever die? damn that thing is crazy! i wouldn't be surprised if ps4 came out and ps2 was still selling.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle73d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
