Wii U tech trumped by new Apple TV multiplayer

Firemint, the EA-owned mobile games studio, has unveiled a breakthrough new technology for Apple TV: four-player split screen.
The Australian studio’s blockbuster app, Real Racing 2, now allows up to four iPhone or iPad devices to connect to the same television via an Apple TV puck.

Seriously, the Wii U tech has already been done a few different ways, you could even argue Nintendo did it themselves on Game Cube with the GBA link cable.

Hell, even PSP/PS3 let you play Lair via remote play if a "map screen" isn't applicable to this.

I still fail to see why the Wii U is something we should be in awe of or remotely impressed by.

Shok5354d ago

I totally see where you're comin from, the problem is though, a lot of people, like you, think that the Wii U is only about playin the game on your controller with no TV. It's much, much more than that. Have you seen the Ubisoft Wii U conferences?

PirateThom5354d ago

I haven't, but I do know it can be used as a secondary screen and used for input. Once again, I fail to see why this is impressive.

buddymagoo5354d ago

The Dreamcast even had a similar feature, that strange device in its pad.

ChickeyCantor5354d ago

"I fail to see why this is impressive."
It's not as much that it's a DS like setup, but more of the fact that the developers are cooking some awesome ideas with it.

This might be my first Ghost Recon I ever buy thanks to the commander mode.

Shok5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

Lemme give you a few examples then:

In Ghost Recon Online, you can actually look through the UAV's eyes as you fly over the map on the controller screen. Then, you can even mark where the enemies are by a simple tap of the screen so that your teammates can see them.

In Killer Freaks, there's a versus mode where one person has a bird's-eye view of the map and the choose where to set the enemies and other variables on the map in order to overrun the 2nd player who is on the ground playing a first-person shooter. Basically, it's like Left 4 Dead with someone controlling all the zombies at once.

Not trying to bash you anything, I mean this in an informative manner but you cannot tell me you've seen those things on the GBA or Remote Play feature. Heck, neither of the things you listed even have a touch screen or gyro-sensor so those 2 factors alone just shows how much they pale in-comparison to the Wii U when it comes to capabilities. To compare a decade-old handheld and a half-assed feature that was hardly ever used to a current full-fledged system that was DESIGNED, BUILT, MADE for this kind of the thing is silly.

Other random neat things about the controller; it can be used in-conjunction with the Wii Remote, opening up even more possibilities, it has a mic in it so there's no need for a headset, and you can video chat with the damn thing. It's a neat device.

JellyJelly5354d ago

That sounds really cool!

Also, we don't know the finished specs for the Wii-U yet so it's hard to foretell what it will be capable of.

xtreampro5354d ago

Those are just gimmicks that people will get bored of, after the wow factor they'll go straight to bashing the size of the controller. If I can play something like Burnout Paradise without having to glance at the map even once then I din' see why I would need this.

Having in-game inventories is way better than having them displayed separately on a secondary screen imo, it actually makes you feel like you're doing something when you pause the game, it adds that sense of immersion and rush.

Doing it in real-time on a secondary leaves you open to enemy attacks by the looks of it.

ChickeyCantor5354d ago (Edited 5354d ago )

" it actually makes you feel like you're doing something when you pause the game, it adds that sense of immersion and rush. "

How is it an immersion or a rush if you have to PAUSE the game?
Thanks to this controller you can switch DIRECTLY.

"Doing it in real-time on a secondary leaves you open to enemy attacks by the looks of it."

^ This is more of a immersion and rush don't you think? I mean you have to act quickly. Besides if you think it will take you 10 seconds to switch then you are wrong.

". If I can play something like Burnout Paradise without having to glance at the map"

Why not look at the Ubisoft conference and see it's just not for maps and inventories.

D0ffy5354d ago

@xtreampro

"it adds that sense of immersion."

Um no it doesn't, if you want real immersion there wouldn't be a pause button, just like Dead Space and Demon's Souls did.

"Doing it in real time on a secondary leaves you open to enemy attacks by the looks of it."

Could you make up your mind? Let's say Skyrim was the real world, do you think a giant dragon/demon would give a rat's ass if you "just needed to switch weapons"? Of course not, so of course it's more immersive if you can't pause the game, it gives a sense of urgency and danger when you're not always safe behind the pause screen.

Too bad Apple doesn't have the software Nintendo develops.

RememberThe3575354d ago

Hahaha! I'm not even a fan of the Wii U and I'll go on record saying that the Wii U will sh*t on this in all aspects.

Epic: Mobile Gaming Business "Largely Broken," Says "Dysfunction" Due to 30% Tax From Apple, Google

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney notes that the mobile gaming industry is "largely broken," and blames the 30% tax levied by Apple and Google.

Christopher657d ago

Man has been saying this for ages and knows full well the only thing he wants is more money at Apple and Google's expense and absolutely none of this will result in lower prices for the consumer.

Tacoboto657d ago

He expects the digital equivalent of opening up his own store inside of a Walmart or Target. It's absurd.

And he feels absolutely entitled to it, in a too-big-to-fail sense - because Unreal Engine is used by so many developers, banning Epic would hurt those developers relying on their tech, which would be super unfair to the developers.

Notellin657d ago

Thank goodness you are there to defend the small guys Google and Apple. You're so brave, Christopher!

Christopher656d ago

Yeah, I'm totally defending Apple and Google and not explaining how another company is just as greedy. That's the big takeaway from my comment, Apple and Google good, only Epic bad. Yup. I totally didn't make it about the fact that this man just wants more money and isn't doing it for the consumers. Nope. Not that at all. I'm just praising up Big Tech. They're my one and only love in life. Please recognize me Big Tech Senpai!

VersusDMC657d ago

The epic games store charges a 12% tax and has been losing money for 5 years...that sounds dysfunctional.

gerbintosh657d ago

They are only losing money because Steam has a stranglehold on the market.

Christopher656d ago

It's a play to attempt to win over the market so they can then realign pricing with what Steam has in the long run. The problem is they are doing only that and not actually building a better software supported platform on PC. Essentially, they're throwing money at the problem, not actually trying to compete by providing better service.

Epic Says They Spent $1B in Fight Against Apple & Google, "Small Price to Pay" for Freedom of Market

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that they have spent $1 billion fighting Apple and Google but adds it's a "smam price" to pay for freedom.

BeHunted660d ago (Edited 660d ago )

Fortnite on the Google Play Store would've generated over $1 billion in percentage fees for Google. Smart move.

1nsomniac660d ago (Edited 660d ago )

I buy most my pc games through epic now. Don’t get me wrong I love steam and steam has had a lot of my money for the work they put into the platform. But i like what Epic are fighting for and they’ve been open about it from the very beginning. I wish they would sort out their verify/repair files option for when you format your drives. The whole rename/redownload hack is an absolutely awful archaic solution.

Tacoboto660d ago

They've been open about how they so openly violate the terms of the platforms they distribute on.

They spent over a billion on legal battles, and also had significant layoffs. Maybe they should cater to their employees first before forcing governments to add more regulations for industries governments just do not understand. The EU DMA - Apple's policies and lawyers have made a mockery of it every step of the way.

And back when they openly and proudly violated Apple's policies, they tried using Fortnite to coerce its players (including children) to rally against Apple's 30% fee.

Which is the same 30% fee console makers apply, but Epic has no problem with that! Epic isn't fighting for you, they're fighting for themselves and don't mind siphoning the money they get from Unreal, even if it results in layoffs.

1nsomniac660d ago

First of all you’re wrong, but second of all you clearly don’t know an awful lot about what you’re talking about.

Tacoboto660d ago

Epic proudly violated Apple's terms by introducing their own payment option in Fortnite. Fact. That's literally what started this. Epic then went on to put banners in Fortnite as a not-so-subtle call-to-arms against Apple.
Epic also violated console terms by enabling cross-platform play in Fortnite. Fact.
Epic cut 800 jobs a year ago. Fact.

Epic sucks, their engine is too big for them to fail and they know it, so they're using that to subsidize their legal battles against Apple and their attempts to rally international governments into creating regulations based on what *they* want.

phoenixwing660d ago

Epics launcher is a piece of crap compared to steams. In fact every launcher so far is crap compared to it. The only reason epic has any traction is they literally give away games in order to drive a user base.

anast660d ago

They have some good semi-giveaways.

KwietStorm_BLM660d ago

They'll make that back in a fortnight.
