RAGE - No Advanced Graphics Options for the PC version

DSOGaming writes: "Lets face it, iD Software are the daddies of PC shooters. Thanks to them, we got some of the most amazing games and engines. So it comes as no surprise to be literally shocked with the company's decision to exclude any advanced graphical options in the PC version of RAGE. Yeap, you read that right. RAGE PC does not feature advanced graphical options."

Im the kind of PC gamer that prizes control above all else. Rage still seems like a great title, but im sad that a certain amount of control has been wrested from me in the name of a certai benchmark.

disturbing_flame5364d ago

Actually i can think like you but i also think that there are some concessions we are not supposed to do only because the game is releasing on consoles.

I don't feel really upset but i'm disapointed by this fact

The game will be moded so maybe we'll have some textures pack and other great improvement with time.
p support
Anyway still the anti aliasing and a true 1080p will make the difference.

pixelsword5364d ago

Ahat about that super texture pack? will that be on PC as well, or is it on the PS3, or either one now?

latinalover5364d ago

When you said modded do you mean hack?

FanboyPunisher5364d ago

Yeah, gimmped again...tyvm you 6+ year old POS consoles.

For people that seem to be a PC purists, several of them do not know much, or have forgotten a great deal about the way Carmack designs games. Their comments are those of someone that seems unfamiliar with Carmack's love of Open Gl.

Lack of advanced options has been the norm with Carmack. Set resolution ? Check. Set invert mouse option? Check. Play the game. I cut my teeth on PC gaming. I spent month in Castle Wolfenstein. But it was Quake and Quake II that really ate up my life. If you played those titles then you know how little control you had then.

Even half life, built on Quake tech was the same way. Id is about the FPS and the speed of combat. That is why Carmack chooses frames over options.

badz1495364d ago

and there are complaints about performance issues too! no advanced setting + graphical problem, what the hell is wrong with id?

what was all the talk about how powerful a platform the pc is all about when in the end you're giving them what looks like a console port? taking away advanced setting is among the biggest slap in the face a dev can do to pc gamers! if they want their graphic to be 'controlled' by devs, they would just go gaming on consoles for god sake!

awi59515364d ago

Yeah as a pc gamer this blows. My 3 cards are getting old but they cant still run the crap out of most games. Sometimes the drivers suck but if you go into your GPU driver you can set the AA higher than the game supports and make the game run fine.

I know some games run like crap but if i run the AA and AF through my cards the game runs at 60fps. Sometimes the drivers just suck but if you let your cards run the game instead of the software you can fix those issues from bad drivers untill they can fix it.

humbleopinion5364d ago

So you're saying that you actually prefer playing with sliders instead of playing the game? Adjusting shadow quality 5 times and then running a benchmark instead of enjoying what you're supposed to enjoy!?

ID created one of the holy grails of PC gaming with auto adjustable graphics based on hardware specs without the need for user interference - that's something that is unique to PC and has no point in consoles anyway. And yet people here complain about "consolization"!? Either people didn't even bother to read the actual article instead of the trolling headline, or they're just out of their mind.

Savy PC gamers who want extreme control use overriding mechanisms anyway via graphic card controls etc. The other whiners who want to play the slider game can go and download a free benchmark utility instead of wasting their times with proper games and our time with their comments.

While I understand that Carmack has criticisms of API overhead for PC development, I'm upset that he decided to not utilize PC power at all for this game.

iD picked the consoles as the Lowest Common Denominator for the game and they didn't offer any bells and whistles for the PC community.

My belief is that once the old-school PC developers turn their back on the PC, then you can have some really good evidence for your claim that PC gaming is ending.

evrfighter5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

no offense dude but Id had turned their back on the pc community long ago.

They targeted piracy as the reason why their crappy quake wars was a failure when in truth it launched at the same time as TF2 and Cod4 and brought nothing new to the table.

The second piece of evidence is that RAGE as digital distribution on PC was supposed to never happen. They were so oblivious to the fact that they had missed the DD train they announced RAGE as retail only as they truly believed that pc gaming was dead. This was in 2008!

Carmack may be a genius but Newell handed him his ass this gen on the pc side. He completely dropped the ball in the pc sector and blew it.

It's simple really Id has simply lost touch with its pc fanbase. They assumed that we had moved to consoles. It wasn't until a few months ago where we started seeing Id piping up about how great pc gaming is. When in reality it was major damage control to try and maximize sales to a fanbase that had shown still had major buying power.

offtopic: I had a feeling it was going to be this way so I'm not suprised. It's the only reason why I never sold myself on RAGE and why I don't plan on purchasing it but will still play it. I'll wait for a super steam sale.

zero_gamer5364d ago

Then you have the independent developers picking up where developers like Bethesda, iD, BioWare left off. These developers can be tomorrow's AAA developers. No, I am not talking about the platform games you could play on a flash player, but quality indie games from developers that actually remember what PC gaming was a long time ago. Then we have DICE that developed BF3 on a PC and then porting to the consoles, and there's Valve, Stardock, Blizzard, CD Projekt RED, SEGA, Maxis, etc.

PC gaming is not going to the grave, it doesn't matter how many old time studios shifting to the masses of console gamers for their focus. There will always be a studio that replace them. If Steam and D2D is anything to go by, PC gaming has a lot of money for developers.

I am with you on this one. Totally agree. Everything I've been seeing about Rage made me want to buy it, but I just had a nagging feeling that it would be a bit overhyped because it's ID.

I was going to get this on PC but it looks like I will go with Dark Souls and get this when the price drops. ALso I've been reading that there are glitches galore in the pc version.

pr0digyZA5364d ago (Edited 5364d ago )

Was deciding if I should get this (on PC), but now after all this I will get it at a sale, planning on getting dark souls now.

gumchewinasskikr5362d ago

Good idea. I picked it up and it's freaking awesome!

NO!!!!!!! that was a bit dramatic, but i am definitely not happy about this.... JC used to be the one that pushed pc to insane heights, so lets hope doom 4 is the graphics masterpiece we have waited for

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072545d ago (Edited 2545d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142545d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2545d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2545d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2545d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2545d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2540d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
